Your digital synth sounding a little too pristine? Well, let's dirty it up in the best way possible. Today I'm "messing up" some lovely Korg Opsix patches with the delightfully dingy Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude analog delay pedal and Long Life parametric EQ/filter pedal.

Awesome video! As much as I love the old style, your recent videos have felt so open and personal. It's rare that professional musicians in the ambient scene are willing to be so open with their process, I really appreciate it.
Thanks John! I appreciate you sticking around :)
What a great idea video man. Really well done, I love the way this sounds
I really appreciate the way you approach effects and signal processing. The Fairfield pieces add some incredibly pleasing depth and dimension.
You , together with Jay Hosking , Inverted Pope, Tim Grogan , Hainbach , and such immensely talents - has become my favorite Synth playing UA-camrs - i learn SO much from watching , listening , and trying to , if not duplicate , then get inspired by your sounds, melodies, and modus operandi !
Great sounds. You got opsix sounding warm
The more I listen the more I like your sound design and musicality....
FM Synths + Guitar pedals. Killer combo! I personally think of this approach as a different approach on FM synthesis. instead of adding sinwaves to form a sound, you add distortion/harmonics and keep the FM synth at more tame algos. Also tape delay and running through a guitar amp in parallel are good tricks for making it sound grittier. I have a vid on my channel somewhere with this approach.
Running my Blofeld through a $50 EHX Memory Boy I got at a thrift store really gives it some vibe. I’d kill for one of those Fairfield pedals, they sound amazing
4:58 - this has got Lorn's Anvil vibe to it... Very nice👍
Great content, as always. I’ve been thinking of adding an Analog Heat to my setup for livening up softsynths and samples in Maschine.
Had one for a while and it was great for re-amping. I used the more subtle settings a lot for mastering too.
I've used the Analog Heat (Mk I) for years, and it does indeed do lovely things to synths--soft- or hardware--and drum machines. Cheers!
After hearing you on my studio monitors on a Behringer Model D and the big Sky(Monuments), I now believe that not all analog things can be emulated.
I likey lots!!
This is primo stuff brother. Very cool use of those 2 pedals with the Opsix. I also have one and you give some great inspiration. Do You have the shallow water ? Have you tried that on the opsix? Great content. You da man.
Thanks! Don’t have a Shallow Water, but it would be awesome for this purpose too 👍
Jameson, thanks for your awesome content on the Opsix. I've migrated from guitar-land and grabbed an Opsix during the blowout sale (my first synth). I've scoured the entire internet for ambient preset packs and your are far-and-above the coolest to my ears. I purchased the set and have been VERY inspired. Now my goal is to rewatch some of your videos on repeat and actually LEARN how to create some sonically satisfying weirdness with sample and hold/LFO goodness.
Question: The sounds you get at the beginning of the video are super pleasant. There's a mid-heavy throatiness to it that reminds me of Tycho tones. I'm looking at an ART Tube MP right now to boost some old mics. What do you think about that box as some tone shaping kit for a synth?
Thanks! I’m not familiar with that particular pre-amp, but I did have a WA-273 that was really nice with synths. I actually use the Analog Heat for that purpose now if I need a little extra.
@@JamesonNathanJones Thanks for the reply and the gear insight. I appreciate it!
What a coincidence! I've just ordered an Opsix and I've begun wondering whether it was a good decision (FM synthesis tends to sound corny and I don't really know how to harness it to suit my needs) but this video shows its true potential when used with other gear. Thank you! How would you rate the Opsix? I've heard mixed opinions, ranging from saying this is a very underrated synth to saying that it's just a toy.
Congrats! It’s a great synth, and like most, its power lies in the hands of the user. I personally like having all the operators laid out on the front panel for a more hands on experience than most fm synths. It sounds great on its own, but yeah I’ve really been enjoying using these pedals to take the edge off a bit.
It does physical modeling/resonator synthesis too, so be sure to check that out :) I have a couple no-talking demos of some patches I’ve made using both fm and physical modeling.
Analog can sound plenty corny also. It's all in the hands of the programmer and how they use it.
I really want one with Modwave. For this to happen, I need to sell my Virus TI2 Darkstar but I can't let that go. I use it all the time, sampling it to the EMU emulator sampler
Are you running the Meet Maude at 9v? Any issues with line-level inputs? (it sounds great, so not sure what I'm asking exactly...)
I am. Haven’t had any issues thus far 👍
😎
did u use a DI/reamp box for this? my rev 2 clips like crazy when i use this pedal and even when i turn it down
I’m just going straight out of the Opsix. Gain staging is always a bit tricky with line levels, but was able to find a sweet spot after adjusting the gain of synth and both pedals.
@@JamesonNathanJones i see u were really utilizing the tone knob here too which is something i should probably do more often
Yeah the tone knob and the feedback knob together can lead to a lot of runaway distortion. Can get away from you really quickly, but sounds really nice in the sweet spots. 👍
MONO (
Yep, they're mono pedals.
Sherlock,-
There's nothing wrong with mono. In an actual song its often better to record synths in mono rather than lathered in the synth's built-in stereo FX, which are often the only stereo parts of a synth anyway.
One would never know how the original Opsix really sounds
Using two Fairfield’s actually destroys the purpose of the demo
Unless the Fairfield is being demoed 😜
It wasn’t a demo of the Opsix. It was a demo of a concept. I’ve done other videos featuring the Opsix by itself.
@@JamesonNathanJones Take THAT , Jo ! 😛
Wow get this synth just to make noise not music… wow
yes I do, dont lie! jk.. kinda. cool demo, thanks! was offered a good deal on a Maude and I think I'll go for it
