I've always loved your songs Tom. loved all the Chicago bands. I grew up in Skokie. A buddy of mine is friends with Ronnie Rice and does some sound for him now and then for his shows. I've heard him talk of reunions with some of the other Chicago bands, do you participate with those too? I moved to FL back in 91 but would love to be able to see you all again if I ever get back up there. Stay safe during these times.
I am 73 and I grew up in La Grange, IL. We were in the same league that Hinsdale was. We were next to each other as far as towns, I saw this group many times and especially at a teen club (Blue Village) in Westmont, IL They were sensational and this double single brought back a lot of memories to me. Thank You
Hi Bob, Can you verify something for me? I love the Cryan' Shames myself and I'm in the same age group as you. In fact, the Cryan' Shames were the first rock band I ever saw live. It was in 1966 or 1967 at the Ridgeland Common facility in Oak Park. When I was in high school, The Blue Village had a reputation of having loose women or girls who frequented that venue. It was said to be easy to score with a girl sexually at the Blue Village. I only made it to the Blue Village twice I think. I saw the Mauds (Hold on) there and maybe one other time. But is it true what I said about the girls who went to the Blue Village being loose? That's my question. Many thanks!
Amen!!! I grew up during the time that this group was popular in the Chicago area. I was just a teenager so I didn't get to see them in concert. I think my first concert was seeing Little Anthony and the Imperials when they did a special show for the airmen at Lackland AFB. I was in basic training there in 1972 and I think they charged us $1.00 for a ticket to get in. The Air Force paid for the talent otherwise. They were great!!!
Takes me back to 69, we had a garage band who played all the songs, I was lead singer. We did Cryan Shames, Turtles, New Colony Six, etc. our band was the “NOYB” , we were practicing one day and one of the band members little brother asked what our name was and we said “none of your business” our name was born. We were 6 members who were in different not so serious bands that wanted to be successful. Our last gig before disbanding was opening act for Three Dog Night in South Bend, In. We won battle of the bands to earn that right. Three of the members went into the Marines, including me, one navy, the other two went on to college. Fun days.
such a great song .my whole life in high school the cryin shames were the american beatles i remember the last gig at blue village w a heavy heart ken harck , off broadway
Blue village. Westmont. Dark Spot in Roselle. I used to sing this version to my grandson while I rocked him. Now 14, he still wants me to sing it. This whole album is so sweet! Thanks guys. Be blest☦️👩🏻🦳🇺🇸
It's great to hear these 2 great songs,back-to-back so thank you to Rick Szatkowski for the compilation. And Tom Doody is just as great a person as he is a wonderful singer. These 2 songs were like magic coming out of my radio when I first heard them & the magic is still there Tom when I hear you & your band play these songs at the Cornerstones of Rock concerts!
In 67 I was at College of DuPage and did a light show for the Cryan Shames at the DuPage County Fair Grounds. They were amazing. Saw them again in Bloomington IL a few years later. So Good!
I saw the Cryan Shamed on my 16th Birthday, in Dubuque, Iowa, at a place that wasn’t opened very long...the place was called...Hullabaloo A Go Go. It was a great night for me!
Man oh Man could these guys EVER Harmonize! Also... The guy with the hook arm could really SHAKE and BANG that Tambourine using his hook to do it! Incidentally, his nickname was “HOOK”! He was ultra cool… Well they all were fantastic!
Always love the harmony from Chicago,s THE CRYAN SHAMES, Thomas Doody & Company are still Incrediblestill performing since giving us "SUGAR & SPICE" all those years ago.
Shames had a great career, but should have been much bigger - these guys could play, had some of the best vocals of the 60s and had all kinds of stage presence. I fell in love to this music in high school and it was more impactful in my life than almost any other band.
71 here. Grew up in Pullman - Edgar Allen Poe Elementary and Fenger was next. I knew a few people who went to Mendel. I'm also class of '69. What a variety of music on WLS then - and WCFL. Cryan' Shames played at my HS Homecoming game at our football field in '70 or '71- We moved from Roseland to Park Forest and that is where they played I met the Buckinghams when my stepbrother lived close to him and he worked for them as an advisor or something. Fantastic Chicago-land groups back then
I always thought this was the best version of "Up On The Roof." Cryan Shames is part of that "Chicago" sound, as opposed to the Detroit sound, LA sound, Philadelphia sound.....................well, I think you get it.
I loved this band so much. This is the best rendition of this song I've ever heard. I am so sad that my Cryan' Shames albums somehow lost their way over the years. I hope someone who appreciates them has them now. The soulful interpretation of their vocals was what made them stand apart from the fray.
Yes, I love these two songs. Their best two. Someone was talking about Danville today, and I remembered "I'm Dennis Dupree from Danville" by these guys and decided to get on UA-cam and listen to the two here that you have posted. Thanks.
This is the absolutely best version of "Roof" - the drums are exceptional. James Taylor does it well but can't match this. "Could Be" is another great song. Best two songs by this band.
Tom, I worked with your mom and brother Mike in the mid-70's (Wescom). Hope to see you guys performing when I visit the area again. I grew up in Western Springs and you played at LTHS Corral and possibly St John of the Cross (my schools).
As I look back, I really appreciate the fact that I was blessed to be able's to sing both of these songs. Thanks for posting
Tom, thanks for singing them. I worked with your mom and brother, Mike in the 1975 - 1980 timeframe.
you had an incredible life son
@@tacey505 Yes I have I have been blessed

I saw them live several times back in those days. They were great.
I think this has become my favorite version of this song. So sorry it took so long to finally hear it.
The best "Upon on the Roof" -- no one can top this!!!
The Drifters did IMHO:
ua-cam.com/video/puM1k-S86nE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JackGauntt
Not even The Drifters who did the original version....
As a former 70s disk jockey and music lover, I agree.
YOU MUST BE MOTHERFUCKING JOKING PAL..?

Great story. I worked with Tom Doody's (Toad) mom and brother in the 1976 - 1979 timeframe.
Absolutely beautiful rendition with so many teenage memories that’ll last forever.
My DJ husband gets swept away with this Cryan' Shames' segue delight!
Loved them in Arlington Heights at Cellar. Seems like an eternity ago! Great sound!
I saw them LIVE in my H.S. auditorium in the Mid-60s.. A very COOL Band. They Sounded GREAT LIVE...!!! Thanks for posting HQ audio. 😊👍 -cheers
One of the greatest bands ever!
Saw them play many times in the 60's in Chicago Suburbs. Green Gorilla, The Hut and many more. Then to Booby's in Niles for great food.

Great memories from Downers Grove Illinois
I attended Marquette Manor Church in Downers Grove for awhile back in the 80's.
The Magic Summer of 1967...and somehow she slipped right through my fingers.
What a wonderful group. Amazing.

Ah! Yes! I remember them well as classmates from St. Procopius Academy in Lisle, IL. These are two of their very BEST!
Always love the harmony from Chicago,s THE CRYAN SHAMES, Thomas Doody & Company are still Incrediblestill performing since giving us "SUGAR & SPICE" all those years ago.
I was fortunate enough to see the group quite a bit, they played in my area. They sounded great in person.
Saw them in Peoria .. outstanding live ..
One of the best bands ever and so under rated.
Not under rated by any of us ..

I'm 72, Mendel CHS Chicago, Class of 1969, heard all these, been there.
I just played golf with JC Hooke yesterday. Quite a character. Pretty unique swing considering his "handicap". His words! Sugar and Spice, man

I always liked this version of "Up On The Roof." "It Could Be We're In Love" has a classic sixties sound to it!

Ooh, those sweet memories,
The Blue Village, I was chosen from the audience to be on stage. Tambourine in hand.
Saw them at my high school in 1968.
Yes, I love these two songs. Their best two. Someone was talking about Danville today, and I remembered "I'm Dennis Dupree from Danville" by these guys and decided to get on UA-cam and listen to the two here that you have posted. Thanks.
Get this across... Dupree is boss!!! There must be something happening in your town!!! - from "A Scratch in the Sky" their 2nd album.
Saw The "SHAMES" at The Corral, LTHS LaGrange and The BLUE VILLAGE WESTMONT Thanks For Posting
Yep - I'm LTHS class of '73. I worked with Tom "Toad" Doody's mom and brother in the mid-70's.
LTHS class of '66. Saw them at the Blue Village before Westmont tore it down. Was at the Corral many times back then.
This is the absolutely best version of "Roof" - the drums are exceptional. James Taylor does it well but can't match this. "Could Be" is another great song. Best two songs by this band.
Dennis Conroy on drums.
Great Stuff !
Thank You for POSTING, Beautiful!
Loved them. Grew up in Wheaton
61
When bands had real talent.

Thank you very much. We played on the north side but we were actually from the west side of Chicago

I fell in love with this song (up on the roof) from this version. Not the Drifters or JT.
Cryan Shames version is the best version. I've known that since the early 70's.
This is great but the beautiful harmonies at the very end of Could Be We're In Love are cut off! 😔
And their Beat EVER! "Please Stay" ???
I'm hearing Smoky Robinson.
Great vocals but they never had competitive original tunes. Covers didnt cut it anymore
they were the beach boys of the midwest, too bad columbia records fucked em bigtime
How?
I am klaa2
Had the pleasure of meeting them in1968
