I am undergoing catechism in the OCU-KP (Kiev Patriarchate) and will be received into its fold. This is a really difficult situation. Even my priest and sub-deacon who runs the catechism said that we can have communion in the Eucharist at Greek churches and other OCU-KP churches, but the Russian Orthodox churches are not going to be amenable to allowing us access to the Eucharist. Is this a schism? Maybe not. Administratively, Ukrainians and Ukrainian Orthodox Christians are caught in a quandary for the most part.

I was just researching this myself. Due to covid restrictions of our government church was not possible this week. But it got me wondering as someone who is new to orthodox would I be welcome going from Greek to ROCOR and vice versa for a while? What about then getting baptised...?

So if I wanted to be a Member of the OCA would I be better off going with Russian or Greek Church?

They’re the same church. It would not matter at all. You should go with the one that is best and easiest for you to access or whichever is the most welcoming for you to join their community. If you have a choice then consider those things. I have a home parish, but I maintain a relationship with several other parishes as well (Greek, ROCOR, and Antiochain). No difference at all as long as it is a canonical Orthodox Church. OCA, Greek, Russian, Antiochian are canonical Orthodox Churches. Russian and OCA are more similar than Greek though, only mildly though.

I think that the Patriarch of Constantinople has started to see himself as the head of the Orthodox Church just as the Bishop of Rome did 1,000 years ago.

One significant difference is that there were many Bishops of Rome that held that view for centuries and adopted heretical and schismatic teachings that sadly had to be cut away from the Orthodox Church because they were a growing cancer. All of the current controversies are fairly recent and the result of Bartholomew. Schism in Orthodoxy shouldn’t happen quickly nor based on the acts of one Bishop (even if it is a patriarch). And while the actions he is accused of and seems to have done related to the Ukrainian church are very concerning and grave, schism is still far more grave and would be a major catastrophe that the Church should make every attempt to avoid. The future consequences of another schism are unforeseeable but undoubtedly would weaken our Church and damage the faith of many devout and pious Orthodox Christians. If Constantinople becomes cancerous to the Church then that would be a grave tragedy, but I think it’s a bit premature to jump to that. The ancient Church most certainly did not jump to schism until it was a last resort.

The Holy Canons are the source of what charges one with schism or defrockment.
The ancient Church had the Holy Council to pass judgment. Today each patriarch has their own council.
To canonise schismatics was an overstepping of jurisdiction and respect .
Constantinople has caused a mess in Ukraine.
