Marcus Miller - Bass Players You Should Know. Ep2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- So let’s talk about the one… the only… the legendary, Marcus Miller. One of the funkiest, most influential bass players to have ever grooved on this earth.
Marcus is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, but he is best known for holding down the low-end on his trusty Fender Jazz Bass and producing the groove for artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn and many more.
In this video you’re going to learn about how he got started in music (bass wasn’t his first instrument), his early career and how he got his break, his gear, his go-to effects, and everything in-between… the whole nine yards.
And remember… lemme know in the comments who you wanna see next!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

The great Stuart Zender from Jamiroquai please!
To think I've been a keen fan and listener of Marcus Miller, Bill Withers and Donald Fagen's 'Nightfly' album for YEARS and never once did I put two and two together... amazing!
Saw him live a few years back. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen. so tight.
He's one of the pioneers of funk bassist, we all know how it began. It's just awesome to see others take the foundation to another level. One of my favorite bassist of all times, love his style.
Yay Marcus Miller. Man that dude can play, one of the absolute best for sure.
Marcus has the best bass tone, imo. Clean clear and full of thump.
Marcus is a beast. My favorite player with Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten.
Marcus has always been my favorite funk player (I know he's way more then that) Everyone always talks about Wooten, but when it comes to pure groove, no one does it like Marcus. He's the man!
James Jamerson an amazing session player. R.I.P
Finally ... I've been wanting this episode for years , but I didn't wanted to spam the petition hahaha. Marcus is a huge influence on my playing, and I've probably listened his albums thousands of times . Hopefully one day I will see him live here in South America , if not I will travel for it. It's my absolute fav bassist , and my reason to keep improving my own style.
Carles Benavent. One of the greatest. He played with Paco de Lucia for years, and was introduced to Chick Corea who was utterly shocked by Carles' skills.
Not only an incredible musician, but a true innovator, developing Flamenco bass playing as no other.
Check out the famous duet between him and Paco called "Monasterio de Sal", unbelievable performance.
By the way, congrats for Marcus video, I love it!!
This series is fantastic. A little more modern but what about thundercat?
Marcus Miller is my favorite Bassplayer of all time. Not only because of his sound, but how he is a great bandleader. On top of that his solos are always so controlled and clean, love him.
Awesome video, really enjoying these kinds of video series. When are you going to get Marcus Miller into the SBL academy.
Scott I am loving these! Thank you!
Prince. Very underrated bassist
he could play pretty much every instrument, he was incredible
Another great tribute, Scott. I’ve followed Marcus since David Sanborn, but only saw him once in 1982 at the Hammersmith Odeon with Miles Davis. A gig I’ll never forget. An inspiring player and musician, then and now.
10 days and I will see Marcus live for my first time, here in Madrid! He is my favorite bass player, I am so excited! Great video btw :D
Im digging a LOT this series, please keep them coming, this is great!
Greatr stuff Scott, keep this going.
this is amazing Scott !! :)
Hey Scott, what a heartfelt and comprehensive tribute to Marcus. That was fantastic and the best I've seen to chronical his career. Bravo!
Huge thanks for sharing all this Scott 😍👍
Great documentary! Great series! Very informative and entertaining. Keep em coming Scott!
I’m loving this series. Thanks for doing it.
I am glad you finally got around to featuring Marcus. Loved it.
Incredible and superb video! Thanks you Scott.
My friend lent me "Tales", then I bought my first bass next week. when I was japanese countryside student. great memories.
Very well done Scott. A super retrospective into Marcus’s career. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Love this series, keep em coming!!!
Love this new serie! It's interesting and full of infos without being boring!
THE epitome of groove and melody imo nobody comes close to his ability for MELODY and GROOVE without playing a million notes this guy has got it going on and the reason I started playing bass there’s just something about his constant choice of the “right” notes
Amazing video!! Thanks scott !! We love Marcus, the greatest bass player of all times for me!! Is a monster!!
Scott that great to talk about great bassist like Marcus, thank you for this video
BRAVO Scott!! Well done is an understatement..
Thank you for putting this together!
I am loving these. Really helpful for someone who was willfully ignorant of bassists for a long time.
Thank you 4 this video! Lots of useful information! Love Marcus since early 2000 and it's always inspiring when you hear him play, so perfect in all ways. Sound, feel, groove, solo, etc. Everything he does is iconic. Would like to know more about John Patitucci and lot of his electric basses, how he and his sound evolved through years. Love & peace!
Scott
Invaluable submission to the Universe of All Things Bass!
I have been listening (and trying to cop) since the late 70’s with Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, David Sanborn and very early solo work in the mid late 80s through my teacher Jeff Leonard (Portland OR/Tom Grant Band) the Marcus Miller Sound.
Again, another sweet breath of fresh aire, as a contribution to the ever expanding, infinite Bass Universe!
Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Bootsy and Marcus Miller are THE sound of Funky/Melodic Slap Bass.
EVERYBODY that came after, are mostly imitators of these style/tone pioneers!
EXCELLENT!!!!
Stanley Clark??????????
Abe Laboriel?
@@chiphargis3703
Stanley Clarke is Bad-Ass but, he's NOT a funk player!
He was always Jazz Fusion, & Experimental (more rock than funk).
@@AndreasLindholm
Abe Laboriel was influenced by Larry Graham, Louis Johnson & Bootsy (just check the album release dates!)
Awesome... Love Marcus Miller!
Next Jimmy Haslip and John Patitucci!
I love the innovative multi instrumentalist guys like Mr. Miller, jeez this man is a huge talent......... and this praise from a ‘not-so-funk-inspired’ bass player 🤙🏼👌👌 so good
Wow! A great session. Aside from his impeccable playing, Marcus HAS to be the coolest musician on the planet.
Great stuff Scott, but that video of Marcus at the end is wonderful.
Hylife will never be erased from my heart. What a tune!
Great video Scott! I saw Marcus and Sanborn this Summer in Detroit. It was a privilege to see Marcus play and front the group. He was definitely the driving force.
Great material! Thank you for making this.
The great M.M through a great, concise investigative clip. Great work, cheers
Awesome! Keep on the good work. It´s appreciated!
Thank you man! These really are great videos, great idea!
Just watched Marcus Miller live for the first time last night for Laid Black and oh my it was absolutely fantastic! He played bass and bass clarinet and DAMN I've been hyped ever since lol
Love this series!
Loving this series
Excellent job Scott!!!!!😎👍🏿👍🏿
Fantastic presentation Scott! Tx
I love this series of videos.
Mark King, Eric Czar, Skuli Sverisson, Jimmy Johnson, Etienne M'Bappé, Jonas Hellborg, Ernest Tibbs. Man, the list could be endless...
I had the honor of participating in a bass workshop hosted by Marcus Miller. There's even an old video of that in my own UA-cam clips. Apart from his incredible chops he's also one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. It was sheer pleasure...
Marcus' slap funk is his signature sound but his finger style groove on "The Nightfly" is one of the best bits of bass playing going.
If you're a great musician...you're a great musician....But if you're a creative musician...now that's a whole different league than the league of great musicians. This right here is a perfect example.
great work Scott and friends!
Great idea for a series, Scott; keep up the steeshy work.
Thanks for showing the records he plays on with the different artists. There was a couple knew for me to check out:)
I am late onthis one.I saw Marcus Live jn concert in London this guy is king no one is better.
Marcus is the man IMHO. There are so many great players but this video says it all. I love Victor and Stanley and Jaco also but I have followed his career forever. I have his first solo record on Vinyl!
Marcus is always an inspiration! I don't care if you play jazz, pop, rock or metal you have to appreciate everything that Marcus has accomplished as a complete musician. Btw Sting would be my choice for next video bio! Thanks Scott love these! Keep them coming!
Scott thank you for the Bass lessons and great History on great bass player made my day!
Instant like! great stuff
Great clip Scott!
Scott,
You are awesome, man!
I love your Videos!
I want to see my heroes,
Percy Jones, Francis Moze, Janik Top, Dominique Bertram, Ralph Armstrong, and Fernando SAUNDERS, and Anthony Jackson.
I really love this series, thanks for making these videos! Oscar Stagnaro and Billy Gould would be great subjects for this series!
My father was a professional bass player for over 25 years , Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten were his favorites . Great vid! Thank you .
Please keep doing this videos. We learned a lot. 👌
I know you didn’t do this one specifically for me, but I thank you anyway😁. My first introduction to Marcus’ genius, was on the Miles Davis album “Tutu”, in 1986. I was 18 and had been playing bass for a little over 2 years. I was hooked from that point on, to today. He is one of the reasons that my main bass is an active Fender Jazz.
If I may make some suggestions for future videos: Bernard Edwards, Stanley Clarke, Mark King, Stuart Zender, Paul Turner, Guy Pratt, Andrew Gouche, Michael Manring.....just to name a few. 😂. Thank you for all you do for the bass community Scott!
Fantastic man. God bless you..
I started playing bass because of him!
Thank you for this vid.... I remember hearing him with Dave Grusin with that Marcus Miller groove that 's his own .....
Great video. Definitely one of my top bass players and one that everyone should study.
Love this new serie Scott ! I'd love to see either Stuart Zender, Mononeon or Richard Bona :)
Superb video!
Thanx Scott. This was a blessing to see. *-----Q-----*
This is a great series.
Love Marcus! It would be awesome to hear about Melvin Davis!
I enjoyed the documentary video on n Marcus Miller nicely done! Very good job!
I was not disappointed by your choice!!!
He's BAD!!! 🔥 🔥
I actually met Marcus at the Cellar Door, a Jazz club in the old days of live music in DC as part of the Lenny White band where he killed the Stew, Cabbage and Galactic Beans solo that was originally recorded by Alex Blake...on a side note...I sat next to him at the after party and he actually let me hold his bass...awesome dude!
Great video !!
Thanks a Zillion, Scott, yu di man, 🇯🇲 style
Bravo, grazie per l'appassionato racconto
Awesome !
Scott, I love these videos. Thanks for focusing on Marcus Miller. Hey, how about one on Bakithi Kumalo? African talking fretless bass. Whoa!
One of my favourite players of all time.
The Sun don't lie is a must have. His first J bass which his mother had bought him was stolen from his car. The one he has was the third. If you interview him ask him about his leather gig bag. It's art in itself.
Marcus is a class musician, love his stuff. Such a great groove player.
How about doing one on Tony Levin? Now there's a man with a huge career span...
Nice tribute to a monster bass player,he is playing in Barcelona next week, can't wait.
I'm just getting into Marcus mostly because of Sire and Markbass !!
🔥🔥🔥
Going to his gig on the 29th this month here in Barcelona!!
i like this series. Keep it up!
Hey that stage “estival jazz” is in my hometown Lugano in Switzerland in the main square. I was there
