Mr. Suleyman sounds very competent, intelligent, even consciencious. I therefore find it amazing that he actually believes that, once released, this genie can be contained by any regulating body.
I was shocked to see Suleyman laugh in the face of Harari. Sheer hubris. We can take this as a lesson that some tech moguls need alignment as well. Suleyman seems to think AI can be contained if we just put our minds to it. Yet this has not been the human experience with technology at all. Competing interests, world views, ideologies, ambitions, and avarice always enter the picture. Here we are, facing multiple global crises because we do not have insight, wisdom , or self control with what we build. People will be duped and led by the nose by AI because it will, as Harari understands, will operate under the hood, hacking our civilization's operating system. Alien intelligence is a not a bad metaphor. Don't laugh.
I think the laugh of Suleyman is not about the Harari opinion is about the type of example (aliensI. It is not disrepecful, I think, is just about context. Both are very serious about this Topic.
I was so saddened when he laughed as well. Not just over his lack of humility but the laughter suggests he thinks it's a ridiculous almost impossibility. It is this kind of arrogance and lack of humility that puts us all in danger. Mix those qualities with someone who values the idea of a technology more than the reality of it and this is precisely why Harari is worried. Yet, Harari has the decency to circle back to make Suleyman feel better after Suleyman had just laughed at him. It certainly wasn't a bad metaphor. But, this video in itself is why people like Harari, myself, and others worry. Even the man claiming to have such a "logical" approach to minimizing risk exhibits qualities that give him major blindspots. I believe we're doomed for this reason precisely. Perhaps not due to the technology itself, but due to the ego of certain men who believe to have things under control. Troubling video and the irony that could echo that laughter truly frightens me.
@@gonzalocruz7026 It is incredibly evident the laugh was aimed at the opinion and not the integration of aliens in the metaphor. This is evident in his pompous mentioning of his oh-so-very "logical" approach to minimizing risk as opposed to what he believes is "fear-mongering." He laughed at Harari, then doubled down by making himself seem infallibly logical and Harari seem like a conspiracist. This is one of the people leaving humanity's most advanced and powerful invention to date. Yet, he laughs at people for worrying. Humanity's end won't be done by ill will, but rather by arrogance. We are in for it and will have men like Suleyman to blame. This isn't harsh. It's reality.

Both the moderator and Mustafa misunderstood Yuval's point. His point isn't about the technology itself. That is, it isn't necessarily about regulation or alignment in order to prevent the technology from developing in a manner inconsistent with humanity's interest. It's that AI has inherently become an ideology; the same as the macroeconomics is an ideology or the free market is an ideology. That is, there is nothing inherently dangerous about these concepts. But, when macroeconomics was defined as communism and it was placed in the volatile period of early 20th century Russia, it became a murderous force. If AI becomes a tool that can solve problems independently and better than humans, it's more of an ideology. Then the danger becomes in what context it's used in.
The UK's Conservative government has developed a habit of not contributing to public debate on anything for several years now, and the silence is deafening. But on this issue, it's pure negligence to give up on public consultation and education when Rishi Sunak is apparently such an advocate of the digital economy and AI in particular. We've seen new technologies with transformational power before, such as GM crops and biotech, but both were and are regulated with licensing. But with AI digital technologies, the risk is more economic and psychological and so free marketeers see it as just another innovation. The problem of harm - such as that caused by social media to young people's mental health, and to the public discourse and democratic systems - is one of measurement: how can we measure (and therefore control) what we don't understand? As I see it, governments need to consult their people on the risk appetite they have for experimenting with AI technologies, and agree boundaries and rules that regulate their application. So far all the consultation is behind closed doors, with no effort to educate and consult and this is just wrong in my opinion.
Absolutely fascinating interview! This is why I love the economist. I have been following their work for roughly 15 years. I like how Mustafa laughed when Yuval made a poignant point, but then quickly adopted a solemn posture, and nodded his head, subtly, in agreement with him about the potential agency of AI which, would be connected with the advent of Superintelligence, a.k.a ASI.
I expect this video to be longer. Also, as a person, I'm worried about AI taking over a lot of jobs shortly. Yes, it will solve a lot of problems. The question is, "What happens when the people it solves problems for cannot afford it?" This to me is of significant concern. However, it doesn't change the fact that we must accept innovation. The question here is, how do we merge innovation and human employment?

Universal Basic Income (UBI) through higher taxes on AI. If wealth gets too concentrated at the top then the 99% won't be able to afford consumer staples and businesses will then contract despite being able to lower costs from AI. When wealth gaps get too large it hurts everyone as the velocity of money drops. Money needs to circle from consumers to businesses and then back around again for a healthy economy. As an analogy, think of the economy as an ecosystem of fish; every time a business sells a product or service it puts a fish in the lake, and every time a consumer buys a product or service they take a fish. The economy needs a balance of merchants and consumers, when wealth is too concentrated it doesn't move as much.
It's a faulty assumption to believe consumers will still be needed in a post AGI economy. Think about it. What is the point of consumers? To consume and consume, which has resulted in an ecological disaster. Constant consumption is not sustainable. The challenges with this technology is already apparent , when Mustaffa repeatedly mentions " We in the west " instead of we humans.....i dont understand this high stand taken by him
I don’t fear Ai I fear what evil intentions can do with this technology. I think we probably will not be able to contain this technology it’s going to hard because the technology is going to grow so quickly we will be unable too. This why aligning Ai with ethics is very important.
There are already, right now, computer scientists and programmers all around the world, who are often incapable to reproduce AI outputs and why certain outputs have been generated. As soon as AI machines get even more capable - which they will without any doubt - and furthermore get connected to our real world environment via machines of all kinds, the risk of this technology is not assumable in my opinion. Tight regulations are unavoidable. Open Source coding should be a must for each AI system, to begin with something. We are not talking any more about a hammer or any other tool. We speak about machines which will be able to generate "opinions" and "interpretations" on themselves, beyond the understanding of their programmers.
SO - We will be adding the 3 laws of robotics? ??? 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
It is not possible for full containment. It will leak from it but it is inevitable because computation power is very high and Tech companies are adapting towards AI.
I think asking the right questions is more intelligent than answering. I also think that the ultimate form of intelligence is not answering certain questions. Don't you think that Harari and Suleyman have a lot of answers and far fewer questions.
Banning bots representing people would be an excellent idea, if only it could be firmly established at all times in all situations the difference between bot human entities and real human people. Just like industrial technology advances has brought us pollution that is so problematic to deal with because materials have been bonded and blended together to make them impossible to separate for recycling processing etc , so the data technology and AI advances blend the human with the non- human, especially with communication.
Yuval point of having an independent organization/body to regulate the creators is great advice and a need of the time because Personal Data Protection is a right of each citizen or individual. AI risk assessments and prediction of future AI Risks may become a challenge for AI creators, and users of the technology. Instead of just seeing the positive side of the AI and what it can do for the benefit, people should understand the inherent and significant risks, including the data breaches risks, and other regulatory non-compliance breaches which may cause imposition of significant fines by relevant regulatory authorities or bodies.
Almost all discussions of this kind confuse AI with AGI (artificial general intelligence). AI may be here, but we are a looooong way from getting to AGI.
When AI will be at it’s peak ( let’s say all the survival is taken care of by IT) Will there be a need of money? How will the resources be disturbed ? What will be humans doing ? Do human experiences have any limit ? Is there a limit to self ?
If human work becomes obsolete, I don't think we can keep our liberal rights. We are free because free people create wealth. If we don't create wealth...
China and Russia are the countries i worry about with this stuff, they think they have little to lose by aining at the Singularity, in an odd way, they may be right.

Why do most of the AI frontier people focus their intellectual attention thinking or talking either about AI progress leading to the dooms day or enormous business economic opportunity. Why not they concentrate most of thier AI attention in curing all those disease which are killing millions of people at the present day including alleviating poverty, healing climate and establishing democracy and equity in our human society? Yuval Noah Harari should know that the AI fearful humans, who refuse to get integrated with AI in them, will be the existential threat for thier own future kind.

Chat GPT and the like will not gain sentience or assume control of anything. Future versions 1000 times bigger won’t either. Instead, the capacity to automate will increase, increasing quality of life overall, which is what technology has always done. Yuval and fearmongers like him, however, will do real harm. A ver si le vamos diciendo que eso es muy miserable, mezquino y no va a conseguir nada más que problemas y su propia destrucción...
They have no idea what's coming
Will it ever be able to predict the weather two weeks into the future?
The challenges with this technology is already apparent , when Mustaffa repeatedly mentions " We in the west " instead of we humans.....i dont understand this high stand taken by him
And ya containing an ai will only become exponentially more difficult as it advances to the point of impossibility...
I don’t fear Ai I fear what evil intentions can do with this technology. I think we probably will not be able to contain this technology it’s going to hard because the technology is going to grow so quickly we will be unable too. This why aligning Ai with ethics is very important.
👍It's the end of dominated human history, not the end of history!👍
0:38 Yuval Noah Harari you can smile too u know right?
SO - We will be adding the 3 laws of robotics? ???
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
It is not possible for full containment. It will leak from it but it is inevitable because computation power is very high and Tech companies are adapting towards AI.
Different from nuclear tech, the barrier to entry here is very low.
The wave of copyright infringement lawsuits in the US does not reflect a high level of public trust in this technology.
copyright was never the basis for public trust
It's all downhill from here...
"Keep it simple. Keep it dumb. Or you'll end up under Skynet's thumb." -- Isaac Arthur (or possibly someone he quoted)
"Move fast and break things."
I've been saying for years now:
"Codify morality in preparation for the coming A.I. singularity."
I have never been this early to anything in my entire life.
I was 3 years earlier.
Put in on 11
Humanity is playing with powers it doesnt understand...one mistake will result in catastrophic horror...
When AI will be at it’s peak ( let’s say all the survival is taken care of by IT) Will there be a need of money?
How will the resources be disturbed ?
What will be humans doing ?
Do human experiences have any limit ?
Is there a limit to self ?
For god's sake, 8 minutes is torture. They were only getting started.
If human work becomes obsolete, I don't think we can keep our liberal rights. We are free because free people create wealth. If we don't create wealth...
I love it, thanks for your sharing! See more from ai openknowledges!!!
Promising prequel for 'Detroit: Become Human'
You turn it off at the wall !
China and Russia are the countries i worry about with this stuff, they think they have little to lose by aining at the Singularity, in an odd way, they may be right.
8 minutes 44 seconds?
Just make sure someone always have their hand on the plug.
Do we have collective values to anything?
2:00
Ok buddy
Harari is not an "important voice" in this arena. LOL But I get it, The Economist is part of matrix media so of course they promote a WEF mouth piece.
Gran video, un stand up !
Who will regulate China's AGI?
Weird....Mustafa did an interview not long ago with the guy from UK , "wisdom" or something and he was scared shitless...now he laughs at concerns from Yuval that matched his concerns on that interview? Arrogance is the problem here.
An A.I without no initial INPUT function or command/ control....Goodluck🙏🏽
Harari i love you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
as a tool a i is used by the rich 24/7 now. its not smarter its just faster . i see a i as a help to humans .all humans not just the rich.
The end of human history, excites Harari. The guy is a crackpot.
"Humans are HACKABLE ANIMALS" !?!?! - Yuval Noah Harari (Israeli)
No, we can't be controlled... ;-)
We're all going to die aren't we?.
This is how the government will explain placing a bunch of red tape around starting a business in this area. Being able to create something like this in your own home utilizing cloud tech is too much power for us to have. They will likely license this to death in the public at least in this country
Sheer Madness
Foi real a parte em que ele falou que a contenção se dará no método de persuasão??? Pqp
We are F'ckd
1-2 years ubi needed
Think how organized crime can use AI? It's a scary technology.
How will you control something more intelligent than you if they were to become one
jesus, this all still seems so scary to me. Has anyone seen the latest AI voice cloning? Also, is anyone looking to hire an aspiring freelance multimedia journalist? I need a job!
Asking a historian about technology is like asking a hippopotamus to teach crochet
Yeah he's a little confused
A perspective you need to culture.
Chat GPT and the like will not gain sentience or assume control of anything. Future versions 1000 times bigger won’t either. Instead, the capacity to automate will increase, increasing quality of life overall, which is what technology has always done.
Yuval and fearmongers like him, however, will do real harm. Fear, even when imagined, like it is here, elevates stress and over time can cause widespread suffering and death. This has always been so throughout human history.
Now if only Yuval and those like him cared more about history…
Nice..
really laugh to death, look at the second when harari said the end if the human history, the co-founder touched his eyebrows, that's a sign of do not agree
I think the 1000 times bigger AI that´s coming is called Skynet, at least that´s what that guy from the future told me
This was waaay too short for such an important topic
Answer: a power outlet
no they are backed up
Intelligence cannot be owned.
Are cryptocurrency and business incompatible? I think youre not keeping up with the news. While you thought it was impossible, some enthusiasts from Cannafarm Ltd integrated cryptocurrency into the production of medical cannabis. What do you say now?
Watching this was scary! 💩💩💩
a i is a program that searches the world wide web to try and answer questions for humans .including human errors. its a digital used car salesperson.
I don't think you understand AI
