I miss these R44's shown here as well. Where I lived, I rode the R32's mostly. So to me getting on the R44's was like riding the LIRR. Being able to sit down and actually face the direction of travel while looking out the window? Couldn't do that on a R32. lol!
I also forgot how much graffiti were on the trains back then! The simple random tags looked bad, but sometimes you'd see a whole car tagged up (bombed I think it was called) and I have to admit, sometimes they looked pretty good.

@sega31098 1971, with the arrival of the R44s as seen here at the beginning of this video. They "bing-bonged" before the doors closed. This was changed with the R46 order to somewhat slower tones that sounded as the doors closed, the standard today. The R46s are seen here on the then-rush hour only CC line where they had been exiled as their Rockwell HP-2 trucks continued to crack and fall apart. THe HP-2s had never been tested on the subway; yet, all 754 cars were ordered with them.

Didn't they? I thought the blue stripes made the trains look better too. Now it's nothing but stainless steel all around. Other than a dash of red on the R-142's the trains look so plain.

I have a way to know the difference between the r44 and r46.tHE ROLLSIGNS ON THE R46 (THE FRONT ROLLSIGNS)ARE LIKE TODAYS R46 ROLLSIGNS AND THE R44 HAS A ROLLSIGNS LIKE A SQUARE,AND IN THE MIDDLE,THERE IS A CIRCLE, BUT NOW THE R44S HAVE THE FRONT ROLLISNS AT THE BOTTOM OFTHEBOX

Hideous! I love the NYC Subway, hate the cars. Toronto has the exact opposite problem. I love the Toronto Rocket.
