- By request, Dave reviews each gauge on the dashboard of his 2004 Peterbilt 379.
Dave has more gauges on his dashboard layout than most truck owners. He's always ordered the same gauge package on every truck he's ever owned.
Each gauge has a function which relays to the driver, important information about the health and functionality of the truck.
The information the gauges relay, can save alot of headaches and problems for the driver and owner of the truck....can prevent blowing a motor or leaving a driver stranded by the side of the road.

I have to say as a new driver myself, the tips, tricks and wisdom I have found in your videos have been just as good a teacher as having a trainer in the truck with you. Many of your videos have helped my personally avoid situations that could’ve ended very badly. Thank you for freely sharing your knowledge here so that new drivers like myself don’t have to learn the hard way.
The external temp gauge is priceless. Too many drivers either don't know, or have forgotten that bridge decks freeze before roads do. Not just for your own sake, but for others. If you are on bridge, or just the highway, watch the people that might not realize the roads frozen.
Great video! A buddy criticized me for putting a pyro, boost, and trans temp in my pickup. I was glad to tell him that I caught my exh temp touching 1400. Eventually figured out one of my "new" injectors was an oddball. 300 dollar gauges sure beat a 5.9 cummins overhaul.
I'm an old truck driver I'm 69 35 years in a truck everything this man's talking about I understand quite clearly I agree 100% with him I did the same things gauges gauges gauges.
when I worked for companies, when I was younger ! I talked them into gauges , they have learned through me.. a good driver knows way before you have a problem.. ( gauges to me are the truck talking to me ) and save you tons of money everybody used to ask me how I know all the time something's going bad they would think I'm crazy but was. always right! gauges gauges gauges it's the trucks Bloods to me. good lesson to teach the new drivers. nowadays a good argument is the computer tells you something's going wrong yes.
but I can feel the truck! computers not I can feel the trailer. ! behind me I can feel the road !! I can hear her she talks to me she sings. you can argue about the computer all you want. but I disagree with you..
this man just gave good lessons two new drivers welcome to the industry .
TO ME the best drivers where the ones that could barely read and write they could read a map they could get anywhere they could fix anything always on time and loved their job I can't say that today

I wish I could take every new driver for a road trip in my B- model, or a my Cracker Box no heat no Spring Ride seats no air seats my B model had a bench seat hit a bump it when it through your spine, fumes in the trucks in the winter time Heat sucked kept the window open so you could breathe you guys today have no clue how nice it is for you we did not have power steering. no air conditioning no air ride seats no pretty bunks. I remember the days I laid on the floor in between the seats and what we used to call coffins little tiny sleepers. oh yes the motors talk about Motors five minutes to go up a little Hill at 5 miles an hour did you ever drive a duplex , Triplex? those were the days my friend those were the days
but we still enjoyed our jobs and work hard that's the way things were when I was a younger man! I'm glad they're better for you ,but sometimes hard times and tough things are good too.. I remember the days that used to say tough times make tough people I believe in that look at things today ..
they teach you a lot about life not like the snowflakes today they have no clue ..
God bless all you guys ! every time I see a large car I think of you I pray for you I seen a lot of bad accidents I seen a lot of drivers die I seen a lot of drivers become drug addicts, divorce, hard times it's not as easy as a job as a lot of people think .. it's a passion.. if you love it you love it .. if you just do it for the money ,,well it's just a job
you understand what I'm saying I miss the blacktop sometimes the things I don't miss being away from my family number one .. hardships that were away from home ,,emotionally that just kills you ,holding people in your arms why they died waiting for ambulances to help people,, bad weather the good weather ..
you get the idea it's a passion my friend you either got it or you don't
P.S. my son is in his thirties guess what he does for a living that's right he's a driver I tried to get him to go to college he tried it didn't like it went in the service was in the Air Force and the Army Special Forces very problem and yes he now understands what it's like to be a driver the hours the hard work the hardships and the good times I worry about him everyday but I trust him I taught him well and I love them God bless my son and keep him safe amen God bless and keep everyone you drivers amen see you out in the boulevard later

Theodore, it was a true pleasure to read your letter. It's nice when guys remember how it truly was and look back on those days fondly. It was a passion, couldn't have said it better myself. And you said you could "feel" the truck. Yes! If you were a good driver you can and I believe that being able to "feel" what the truck is doing is what separates the pros from the rest. Well said! Ran a Peterbilt with all those gauges for a short while. You're right, they were a great benefit in maintaining the truck. The one thing they were not good for was detecting an oncoming Train. Rookie driver used it while I was on vacation. It was a beautiful piece of equipment...RIP Pete :(

Smart-trucking* No, he snapped an axle with just the Tractor on the tracks. He got out and watched the mayhem from a short distance away. The company gave him the sister Pete to run...go figure! Three DUI's later he finally got fired and all was well :)
I own and drive a 92 pete 379 exhd with an old school 3406b mechanical cat. American class interior with full gauge package. Learned how to drive from my old man who is old school trucker over 45yrs on the road. Taught me mechanics and how to read all the gauges and pay attention to the different sounds the truck makes because the truck speaks to you. Been out here 20 yrs and man how trucks and drivers have changed from yesteryear. Very few real truck drivers left amongst all the steering wheel holders
Juan Alvarez I miss my b model cat. Timing got off (and I knew it) but kept going. Cracked all 6 pistons and put a hole in #3 vaporizing the aluminum. I never did find remnants. If the grey smoke don't clean up when its warm. Timing. That motor made 110,000 lbs feel like 60'000 lbs . I hope to have 2 some day, one for pay and one for play lol.
Saw your "tour" with the person from Germany. I saw all the gauges in the front cab and wondered what they all did. When looking on Utube, your video came up. Hello again. If I was in trucking I would certainly invest in those garages. The health of your rig is so important of course. I particularly liked the twist dial to auto turn off or warm up rig.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the videos. They've helped me out a lot in my journey to become a truck driver. I'm about to finish driving school and I take my road test tomorrow morning. Be safe out there

Gday Dave, great video mate, I enjoyed the tour & description for each of the gauge's. I totally agree with you on the need to know how the truck is doing & detect problems before they cost possibly big dollar repair bills.
I have a HINO 4X4 truck that I have converted into my retirement exploration rig, & I run 16 gauges for front diff, gearbox, transfer box & rear diff etc with the balance being a setup similar to yours mate.
What I have found is the number of people who think it is an excess of gauges & really don't understand the reasoning behind the purpose or need to have so many, it's kind of depressing considering I have fitted the whole system myself, but your video makes all the work & reason behind so many a good thing.

Great video! I'm a younger driver (driving about 5 years) and I always appreciated the older trucks and drivers.
Im driving a 2013 kenworth T800 and like you, my bosses understand the importance of having all the gauges so you can monitor the life of the truck.
One thing that I loved was the engine idle timer. That's such a useful tool and I can't believe that I haven't see that before.

More gauges please! I didn't get navigation in my 07 Pete 379 because it ate up gauge room. To me I'd sooner get to my destination without any problems, and gauges have saved me more than once
Me too. Plenty of room for the GPS on top the dash, from Garmin, not Peterbilt. Dave
My '95 379 had a larger Pyro along with the boost/vacuum over on the left of the main display, liked that for easy engine monitoring while driving. Drive to the gauges more when they're readily visible.
I'm SURE you are used to where yours are and scan them just as well!
Some other controls change, and not all for the better. Fan control for one just isn't seen like it was. On or auto at least, lets you hit the fan EARLY to chill it down when you KNOW a big grade or hard pull/slow traffic is coming. Nice backup for when the auto control breaks as well.
Nice to KNOW how things work, and how they are working. Gauges/switches are all you've got when behind the wheel. Jumpering the Jake so it went on with the switch saved My butt when the clutch safety switch went intermittent - MUCH better than trying to limp the hills without a Jake!
Roger, are you saying the new trucks don't have a manual fan switch? Or am I just reading this wrong. Dave

Excellent video, before I wondered why trucks and coaches have so many gauges. Then after each gauge you explain I think, oh yea thats important.
I'm putting a full gauge set in my 88 Kenworth. I absolutely agree that if you're going to own a truck it should be one you want to drive.

Great video Dave!!! Back when you could lay out the dash how you wanted. I ordered a '17 389 last year custom, and the dealer told me Peterbilt no longer offers the individual custom dash layout. Done by engineers now, with a one size fits all design. I have platinum interior and looks great, but WOW have times changed. Safe travels.

No kidding, can't arrange it yourself now? Someone told me they don't have toggle switches now, rocker switches instead. Is that true? Like the look of the 389 but never saw inside one. Dave
No Dave. It's true. Still is nice with rosewood dash, but as I was told, one size fits all. Mine has platinum interior (old American Class), has 17 switches(all rockers ), and 23 gauges, 6 of which are virtual, in the SmartNav screen. Leather seats, 2 tone interior, 18 speed, 550 ISX, with the high torque setting(2050)
I still prefer the older 379 layout...and toggles.

nice!!!! I agree with you Dave, you need gauges to monitor what your truck is doing at all times. But I get a kick out of some of these "company trucks" , you are lucky if you have a speedo, tack, volt, water, oil, and primary air and secondary air. any more than that you are a lucky dog!!! never understood that!!!!
When I was young I drove a company truck briefly for Trimac and they didn't even have fuel gauges! Had to dip the tank with a stick! Pathetic. Dave

Just beautiful truck you got there! That idle timer is nice idea. Here in Finland we got truck pre-heaters, but no idle timer :/ Realy could need that. Also we lack some gauges too. Only trucks own computer system which starts to warning you when all hope is gone :D
I totally agree with you on the gauges, when I ordered trucks I told salesman I want to see the dealer option book I want to know every guage and option available to me. For instance air intake snow shield switch for snowstorm days, and heated windshield option. all good stuff. cold climate option good also... heated fuel lines by arctic Fox. heated fuel tanks also I ordered 600.00 option. a must have.
Great video, there's a lot to be learned by reading the gauges. As a suggestion, perhaps the temperature for the lubricants (engine, transmission, axles) should be a little over the 212 degrees. Normally, through operation (cold/hot/cold) these devices breath; air expelled as the temperature goes up and cool air returns as it cools. With this cool air comes moisture which condenses and falls to the bottom. The idea of getting the temperature of the lubricant over the boiling point of the water will prevent the formation of sludge. The same criteria applies as the rationale to keep fuel tanks topped up to limit the amount of cool air that returns and condenses inside the tank. Again, thanks for a great video.

Full clusters can be intimidating, but they can also be the difference between becoming a road hazard & not. The single biggest factor between the licensed driver & the professional driver is attention to detail.

Great video as always. How about a video explaining all the switches now LOL. A couple I saw towards the end of the video looked like an axle interlock on the right side of the gauge cluster. I assume your jake brake switches are down below the main instrument cluster by the steering wheel?

My fathers kenworth had 2 separate fuel gauges, that was in a 05 w900, im not sure if the newer ones do now however

Not a fan of the cluttered gauge look. I'm a company driver in a 2020 Freightliner and it gives me all that data those gauges provide, in the LCD screen on the dash. A much cleaner look. I know Freightliners are garbage trucks but they did do a good job on keeping a clean and simple look in regards to minimizing a dash full of gauges and keeping it all in 1 screen.
My last boss thought I was crazy and just liked the way they looked because I would and still will not drive newer trucks from the lack of gauges. To me its knowledge about the engine and more

So cool to have live feed stats on every system in the truck. This blows the doors off multifunction digital displays. I'd want my truck just like this. One repair avoided pays for all the gsuges.
They make cars these days where you only get a speedometer and a gas gauge. Everything else is an idiot light. I suppose it works fine, until you get one of those really expensive problems that you completely miss until it's too late because you couldn't see minor changes in how the engine is performing.
Thank you for sharing this. Still can't beat analog gauges, along with helpful (good) colour ranges. At a glance you can see what's going on, whereas all digital can be too messy to look at all those numbers flashing up and down. You actually need to stare at it longer to figure them out. NOT helpful.

I guess you need that steering knob on a small steering wheel with a truck that has power steering. Can you imagine how hard that truck must be to navigate without it? OMG!😂
Hello Dave, quick question. I was in Colorado the other day when I heard two drivers’ talking on the cb radio about pulling into the truck stop I was at and they were rambling on about whether they were going to turn their truck off or leave it running. One driver said, “well it’s 3 degrees out so I’m going to leave it running and the other guy said, “yeah, we’re not in the city (Denver) we should be okay.” The other driver then said, “yeah just set your trolley valve (Johnson Bar) and you should be okay.” Now, as I watched them get out of their trucks and walk inside I stared in awe at the fact that the brake lights remained illuminated while they were out of the truck and I asked myself how do you do that? I wanted to stay for an extra minute or two to hopefully ask them how is that possible, but I did not get too. My question is how do you set the (Johnson Bar) to check that your brake lights are working correctly on a pre-trip? Thankyou!
The other important gauges are on your own body. Use your senses! Learn to be aware of strange noises, odors and vibrations. I know it sounds funny, but it makes a difference.
Why is it especially important to monitor your primary and secondary air pressures while at the scale?
If there is a big variation in air pressure between primary and secondary, then you have an air leak. So if you hold the brakes down, and your secondary drops down to nothing, probably have a blown out front air can. If the primary is low, then you got something going on with the drive axles. Basically, it's a guarantee for a ticket, and out of service DOT sticker.
Can you plz start the engine and show the dashbord all gauges ? i would like to them when they are on cuz im driving not too recent but not many gauges.
Wasted space for the two fuel gauges, my '99 379 has a toggle switch to show L & R tanks independently. Also notice you had a vacuum gauge for the primary filter but no + pressure gauge to monitor the secondary filter, or maybe you only have one fuel filter.
Do they offer all of these gauges in digital form where you can set certain perimeters such as not wanting the engine temperature to get over a certain degrees and if it does the gauge will flash?
I don't know. I've seen a lot of them in digital form at Walcott but I really know nothing about their parameters. Dave

Where your outside air temperature guage is I have a load guage. Shows me how much weight I have on.
That's maybe sounds funny for paccar lovers but volvos have all of those "extra" gauges on display under gauges menu in basic models. Volt and Amp gauges are related to each other, so if there is problem one gauge is enough. Fuel filter gauge is very useful but again if filter is clogged you'll get notification on dash. Regards from volvo man :)

Sadly, no . Mine is an MBN engine that with a few modifications became the same as a 6nz but they called mine a bridge engine from the factory. Dave

Uhm no, most of the airplanes now have digital gauges too with the exception of the standby gyro/attitude indicator (and if they have one, the old school windshield compass), which is still analogue. Having said that, just like the old school Petes and Kenny's, you can still order some planes with old school gauges, instead of all digital.
You custom ordered the truck and didn't bother with even one locking axle ,dude ,I'm loosing faith in you 😖!
Winter driving in Canada you; know I've only use my locker maybe twice a winter but that's an option that pays off!
I've got locking diffs and never had a problem. I would spec locking axles if I was going offroad. Dave

Volvo is Better Safer , more comfortable ,better on Fuel . Pete has way to many Gauges ,, you want to keep your eyes more on the Road .VOLVO is safer, quieter , ETC. ETC.
I got a Volvo only 30.000km and the engine is broken already.... Easy driving (no more than 1400rpm) soo in conclusion Volvo can be Good... But id rather get myself a Oldskool Peterbilt 379 with a C-15 engine. In comparison to the Caterpillar engines.... Volvo's are Junk because they are tooo modern.
