Those are just mass housing blocks you have all over Europe, it have nothing with communism, they were the perfect in post-ww2 era to give home to many people. And Yugoslavia was a socialist society far away from hardcore communist states of Warsaw pact. Actually 90% of apartments in those buildings are very nice inside.

Similar-looking buildings can be found all over Western Europe as well. However, the ones in ex-Yugoslavia countries are of decent quality as they were built for the general population, while the ones in Western Europe are of poor quality as they were built only for the poorest social classes.

It is called Brutalism. You have them in western Europe as well. They were applied more in southern and eastern Europe because they provided mass housing for people, as so much was destroyed during WW 2. Anyway, people either love these or hate them. I am not a fan of this kind of architecture, I like old historical buildings.

What you describe is reinforced concrete. Every building in Serbia is structural reinforced concrete, from a house to a skyscraper, it must be or even the small earthquakes which we get would destroy it.
These buildings actually PRESTRESSED concrete, there are pillars and floor slabs prefabricated, the slabs have tendons inserted and tensioned so they are literally holding the concrete together if it ever cracked, this isn't done on new buildings almost at all.

Its comfy living in an american style houses but its in same time unfunctional kind of urbanism, you spend in car hours getting to destination, while you have nothing of ammenities in walking distance so you need to sit in car. New Belgrade was lilke tbe most advanced kind of urban theory of that time, and block you have been is in zone of protection, not architectural but urbanistic kind of monument, and relics of advanced time when architects had a freedom of experimenting with urbanistic theories mainly those of le Corbuisier's who was an inspiration for this project.
You may find it dificult to get used to it on start but over time you feel benefits like green space inside and arround block, opened terrains for sports even opened free gyms on every corner, kids playing inside the block free from trafic, you have playgrounds everywhere... People borned in that area realy love it and cannot imagine being in downtown for example. Other thing is that New Belgrade is among the most expencive places in Belgrade.
And to mention that park near the river was partly fixed few years ago and there is initiative to fix issue with barges on the river so we have a plan for cleaning the river up and bringing only barges that fulfill aestetic and functional conditions so that part of the river is soon going to be fixed too.
Have a nice time here, hope you will enjoy.

I want to come check it out. I took an uber a few years back and the driver was a ex serbian elite Basketball player. An old guy from before it was normal for serbians to come play professionally in the usa. Growing up, my favorite sport was basketball, and it wasn't till I was 17 that I found a sport I could be elite myself in thats totally unrelated, but I still love the game and have followed it and played it all over the country, usually after one of my competitions was over. Anyway, I know a little about the sport, and this old dude? Fuck, that guy was knowledgeable. I encounter many people and usually when I talk sports with people they have no idea about the sport, even when they are a pretty good rec athlete in the sport themselves. This Serbian dude, was one of two. The other guy was an Irish soccer player I met that was talking about Hockey like he was a pro in Philly...

Sorry for not tending to our lawns... we got caught up in a few things like a 50% recession (yes, GDP being HALFED!), the second worst hyperinflation in human history, an almost complete breakdown in social order, wars in neighboring countries, war in our country, being bombed, risking our lives to oust a dictator, followed by years of economic, social and political turmoil very typical of such a situation from which we've just relatively recently managed to claw ourselves out of.
I can safely say in the name of all Serbs that we are deeply saddened that our lawns are not up to par according to your standards.

You stayed in the Coca-Cola building? The hell you're even complaining about? In exchange for the giant advertisement, the Coca-Cola company in Serbia pays for the upkeep of the common areas in that building. Not to say that the others are particularly worse, although you can still find some very unkempt ones on occasion, more connected to how much the tenants in that particular address give a damn rather than being any sort of a material wealth indicator.
And 'terrifying'? Come on, even for a click-baity You Tube video playing into the audience's prejudices against 'commie blocks' you have to admit that was a bit much.

If you say something that doesn't vibe with them they will spew a volley of insults your way i think all vloggers should stay away from Balkans or at least block videos from showing in country they visit for their own mental sanity! 😂

Serbian women are hot blooded. The Serbian DNA has Turkish ancestry. The Croatian DNA has Italian ancestry. You need to spend more time in these areas. You can’t beat where Mediterranean meets Slavic when it comes to beautiful women. ✌️

Why travel than, you should stay home. Here is a UA-cam channel where you can see what you have missed. It is call 'Gastro Trazilica',so you can check there many things you have missed.
