Oh man. Solo hiking in the dark on that terrain is actually quite dangerous. You could twist your ankle or fall, and then we'd only have a picture of a Henry Popsicle. Be careful out there Henry. Unless you're facing flooding, it's usually best to sit tight. Glad to see you made it down ok.
That is indeed a special part of the Lake district. Lovely video thank you, stay safe. One really needs a proper high mountain tent to wild camp up near the summits, especially in the winter months.
Henry, one big reason I enjoy your channel is that you are truly "one with the landscape". What differentiates you from many others is that you are not just an observer, but clearly have an emotional bond with where you are. It is very pleasing and gratifying to watch your interaction with nature. Recover soonest!
@@wolfypics7339 Apparently you never read my comment and were already predisposed to critique Henry Turner's photography skills. There was no mention in my comment about his photography (which is very good) but his emotional love for the environment. I think most would agree but you, a bit elitist, eh?
Hi Henry, no point in pitting yourself against nature, inevitbaly the human loses. So a very sensible choice in my view. Thanks for sharing another interesting and enjoyable video and some intersting images as well ... and let's not forget, the mountain rescue guys have enough to do so well done for "Pulling stumps" when you did.
Normally when I see your videos I want to be right there next to you. This time, not so much…. Great video and beautiful light for your images. Carry on and thanks for sharing what you do.
Good call. You can always go back. Did I spy a glass water bottle? If so might I suggest you replace it with a cheap plastic bottle? It's a lot safer. Cheers.
You normally have a pretty good gut feeling about things as you spend most of your time in the open. So you probably did the right thing. Fair play young man. Hope you feel better soon.
I have an MSR tent which came with a few extra guy line connect points which they never supplied guy lines for, so if it' windy I use them too and get the lines really tight, I also use 4 Delta pegs and that make me feel much safer in fairly high winds as they stay put and can't get blown out.
Been there myself. Tent blew down, I just lay there under a flat sheet until day light. Top of Derry Cairngorm at nearly 4000ft. Longest night of my life 😅
great vid, it's bad enough camping on the North Norfolk coast in September and watching an aluminium pole bend in the wind and not straighten up again, let alone being alone on a mountain. Probably did the right thing packing up, though that walk back must have been dodgy too.
Another great outdoors video. Keep it up....keep suffering in the cold UK summer weather....what do you mean it's winter? sorry mistook summer for winter🤣
Been there myself a couple years back on Dartmoor; thought the tent was going to be torn apart! Baled at about 2:00 am after zero sleep. It’s the right thing to do.
Well done Henry, you made the decision that you felt was right for you, then took your time getting down the mountain, and you got down safely, which is the most important thing! That said I tend to agree with other comments that it might have been best to sit it out and come down more safely at first light. Cold and uncomfortable maybe, but safe definitely. To that end I always carry an emergency bag and blanket, although fortunately I have never needed to use them. Your headtorch looks a bit light on lumens and beam width though, walking down a mountain in the dark, I would prefer a bit more light and vision around me than yours appeared to give in the video. Stay safe, and I look forward to the next adventure
Brilliant video. I feel I shouldn't say this but I enjoyed it immensely! No - not schadenfreude I promise! It was just so real. I'm always amazed how you manage to put together such high quality (content as well as technical) videos showing your adventures when the rest of us would find just the adventure hard enough on its own. This takes it to new level! Packing up at the top of a mountain in roaring wind in the dark - and filming it for us! Respect!
Awesome video Henry, and what beautiful shots you got on the way up😍 think it's about 30 years since I was last at hard knott 😊 so relieved when you got down safely though, that really looked quite terrifying 😱
One of my most enduring memories of weather whilst camping is a night where I was in the foothills and the wind just kept coming down off the mountains viciously in waves. You could hear it roaring down the slopes & accelerating like a freight train coming towards you. Every wave was preceded by a pressure shift so all the walls of the tent would be sucked inwards, then the rolling roar as the wind got closer before a moment of almost stillness followed by the tent just billowing & shaking madly. My tent survived but I did have a broken pole & I didn't get any sleep but it was such an awesome show of nature I feel humbled to have witnessed.
Believing weather person is one of the most dangerous things to do. They can be wrong all the time and still have a job. Glad you made it safely back to the van and that the van is running right. Life is full of things that don't work as we hoped.
You’re a brave man Henry, wish I was younger and had the balls to do that buddy. But you got some stunning images Henry. So it was well worth it. And you managed a cuppa soup lol 👌👌👌
Sometimes you’ve just got to know when to stop, think and act. Good call. Safety first Henry. Still all was not lost, you got some good shots with some wicked light.
Yeah been there got that t-shirt mate! Been in north wales plenty of times with the tent being pushed flat to the ground from the wind. Sound choice to pack up and glad you made it down safely. 😊
Eat/ Drink? How about consume - cos yeah, I dont know where soup might fit in the mix! Well done on sticking with your gut and not stubbornly giving in for the sake of it. You were shattered at 2/3 am...imagine how you would have been at 9 - and then driving home on that?! Still a great adventure even if it wasnt what you'd predicted for yourself!
English, whether you say “eating soup” or “drinking soup” depends on how you're consuming it. If you're consuming it from a bowl with a spoon then you're “eating” it. If you're consuming it from a cup directly into your mouth then you're “drinking” it.
It's a shame that it didn't work out for you Henry, but i think that you made the right decision to pack up. It must have been a bit of a nightmare walking down in the dark. I'm glad that you got back safely. Great image's as usual mate. Look forward to the next one.
Wow - edge of our seat stuff, Henry. Gotta go with your instincts, particularly when safety is the consideration. Of course you made the right decision. Glad you survived a bigger adventure than you bargained for. Onward and upward!
A good decision made for the right reasons, staying would possibly put you in danger and the mountain rescue team also.Chin up there is always another time.
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Hey there, Henry. I know from my own experience that there is also the "darkness" factor that skews our perceptions so much that it is difficult to decide whether something is truly dangerous or not. Glad you're safe, in any case! Cheers! PS... Your calendar is already almost a 1/4 over!!! LOL
I enjoyed the heck out of this video! It felt very different from others you've made recently since it emphasized more of the camping adventure than just looking for photo compositions. It got me hyped to get back out backpacking with my camera in Colorado actually!
Oh my Henry. I was sitting on the edge of my seat worried about you. I can't imagine going solo camping in the wilderness like that. It must be so primal. You must have a great sense of direction to make it down the mountain in the dark. I get lost in daylight.😅
Thank you for taking us on another adventure. Glad you made it down safely and great images. Question related to your camping, do you have to ever worry about critters (snakes and the likes) or sheep joining you anywhere you camp?
Thanks for sharing. As I type I was planning going wild camping tomorrow and Saturday night but having checked the weather forecast and seen your video I am going to re-schedule.
If it makes you feel better about it, I bailed yesterday from a photo walk on the beach because it started to rain a little and I did not fancy being out in it, lol
Hi Henry, cheers for another video, we're actually experiencing the same winds here in my part of Canada, making for a -19 C windchill at the moment. You're a brave and wonderful soul for going out and creating content in all of that for us to enjoy. Thank you again! Cheers!
Nice views and pictures 😊 However, *never camp* on a high point, especially if it is hard wind. Always look for safe ground at a lower point. As for tents, check out one of the best brands Hilleberg.
Henry, glad you made it out of there safe. Loved the video, thanks for showing the reality of what you go through to create your art. Look forward to your next adventure.
Thanks for sharing Henry! I guess that bad weather gave you the interesting light for those brilliant images even though it ruined your wild camp! Hope you have a brilliant weekend!
I’m amazed you managed to get that tent packed up in the dark, what with all the wind trying to fly it away! Well done, Henry! You certainly made a good choice in those conditions. The trek downhill must have been terrifying. I certainly wouldn’t have done it with a head torch. Glad you made it back safely. You’ve just made a thriller of a video!
All a question of assessing the risk Henry, staying there in the wind or hiking back in the dark. Your experience and judgment ensured you made the right call. At least the day wasn’t a total loss as the images on the way were great.
Beautiful photos of such a dramatic landscape, and what an adventure!! So happy you made it back safe and sound! I’ve learned to never ignore that little voice or feeling and to not second guess paying attention to it. Most of the time it’s giving the best advice, so glad you heeded yours. Looking forward to your next adventure 😁
I love those "special light" photos and glad you made it down safely. Just wondering why you shot at F6 as I would worry about not getting enough in focus. Thanks.
You did the right thing. I would have too. But why drive home straightaway. It was 2.30am you were shattered. Surely you were in the Blue Jay and could have got your head down for a few hours until light. Have breakfast which you would have bought. And perhaps a sunrise photo in the immediate vicinity you were in?
Thank you for sharing this experience. I was wondering where you were able to get water for cooking and drinking at the spot where you camped. Did you pack in the water or was there a spring somewhere near the top?
Just my view, but if you take a bivi bag with you, you could have collapsed your tent and bivi over it. It is dangerous coming down off the hill in this conditions. All the bast mate 👍
Been a while since you've done a wild camp video. Really enjoy those, even the aborted ones! If being smart and showing common sense is a good UA-cam algorithm, this video should get a million views! Packing up in a high wind in the dark is never fun. Filming the whole process: heroic!
That is indeed a special part of the Lake district. Lovely video thank you, stay safe. One really needs a proper high mountain tent to wild camp up near the summits, especially in the winter months.
We breathed a sigh of relief when you got back to the car. That was a mad one!

need a wee single malt miniature up there in the tent - sorted.
Not ideal when you are already under the weather! Not easy to pack tents etc when windy either! Should have gone in the camper and slept in that 😘
Well done on getting down and finding your car. Definitely the right decision. Scenery was pretty amazing. Good luck on your next camp

Bit of an anxious watch Henry 😅,but a good lesson in how not to panic 👍
Simply amazing work my friend 👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Forecasts don't apply to the lake district 😂found that out many times
