I calculated my “Life Score”

  • Through the ups, downs, and steady states, it's really discouraging when it feels like a series of downs keep stacking one on top of another and after my father was killed, I've had series' of weeks or even months where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong and so I've spent the past near-decade tracking my downs to see if there's a way for me to measure how "bad" my life is in periods of time, and how "great" my life is in others.
I use "air-quotes" by the way because I now realize a HUGE part of all of this is perception depending on inflection points, mood, amount of sleep I get, and just straight-up luck. Still, regardless, in this video, I want to share exactly how to calculate how much your life sucks (which of course, on the flip side, also means calculating how much your life rocks). In other words, the title is an attempt at being algorithmically friendly - not to be, nor encourage a self-pity fest.

    1:38 - Quantitative Metrics
For about 4 years, I have used the Renpho Smart Scale and corresponding app to track various metrics like Body Fat Percentage, Lean Muscle Mass, Visceral Fat Levels, and a bunch more. Now it's important to note that smart scales are NOT medically accurate (like say, compared to a Dexa Scan), but they are a great in-home alternative to, at the very least, track net-changes. 2:13 - Qualitative Metrics
When we're trying to make a change, it's imperative that we can track and measure accurately. This is super easy with things that inherently have numbers associated with them - money, temperature, distance, speed - but with things that are qualitative - like say, happiness - measuring accurately and consistently are near-impossible. The easiest way we have is to try and quantify the qualitative by doing a subjective rating, say, "How happy are you on a scale from 1 to 10?". The lack of accuracy and consistency is obvious - all the parameters could be identical two days in a row, but the fact that we got less sleep on day two might make our perception of everything else worse compared to day one. Still, it's the easiest way to try and grab a baseline-reading.
    2:58 - Financial Measurements
By the way, if you or someone you know is in debt, here is my completely free Get-Out-Of-Debt workbook:

I've used this spreadsheet as a way to self help, by being able to gain clarity in order to act; to make necessary positive changes, and the most valuable part of it is that it gives me a birds eye view of what matters. Self improvement is challenging before there's clarity.

Maurice - I’ve been following your work for a while now and you always come across so inspiring. We dabble in similar things and have equal quirkiness lol
What I appreciate about this video is how relevant it is to some of the “feels” people are likely feeling everyday and it’s a great tool to assess truly where you are at. Also allow yourself to be humble in private and learn through your own results. Stellar idea and I’ll be using this one. Cheers! Krista

thanks for this Maurice. I enjoyed hearing about your system and measurements. Just something to keep in mind, however, for the mental health scale(s). You might like to consider not just how many "negative" experiences you have BUT also how many positive ones, like how many times you feel happiness and joy or satisfaction and accomplishment. Just a thought. Thanks for the videos : )

I hate spreadsheets. Instead I create a reflection spread for reference when journaling and actually reflect on events. Yeah no, I'm not going to audit myself in software. 😂

I used to work in insurance and one of the products was a legacy product that for some reason never underwent migration to the brokerage software, so the whole thing was done manually using a million spreadsheets and mail merge and quotes, renewals etc were all done via post and whoever did it before me didn't follow the process correctly so shit was always fubar!! ARRGGHH!!!!
