    I think people need to understand that humanizing a villain doesn't necessarily means making them sympathetic or people you'd root for. Humans can be dick too. A good example demonstrating this I feel is the movie Downfall, which took time to show Hitler in a more human light, giving him some moments of occasional kindness and sadness... while still not letting us forget that this in no way nullifies the fact he was a horrifying person with a garbage ideology that killed thousands of people.

    For me personally, I'd like more nuanced Disney antagonists, not necessarily villains, that are complex and challenge the protagonist's perspectives. That's why Magnifico was a waste; he had a point, but because they made him a random heel-turn villain, it was neglected.

      One of the things that can make or break a villain is whether or not they feel empathy. Dark personality types are incapable of feeling empathy so no matter what they are always out for number 1, whereas some villains truly believe they are doing the right thing and working for a greater good, even though their actions are truly vile. I think of Anakin Skywalker here, how he felt certain that he was bringing order to the galaxy despite hurting the people he wanted to love.

      You see the problem with most villains you see in animated movies from Disney dreamworks and illumination is that their villains are not as dark as the ones from the 90s or 80's the modern villains are not that scary they usually portray being more comical then frightening

    • @OpticalSorcerer

      I don't want classic villains per se since a lot of them didn't feel fleshed out beyond the trait of selfishness. Frolllo always stood out to me because he rationalized his villainy--and Magnifico and Namaari could've been our foray into a generation of more nuanced, complex Disney villains. (Also gotta give a shoutout to live-action Lady Tremaine; she was still evil, but they gave a humane reason for it besides "the plot needs her to be evil".)

      @@OpticalSorcererI don’t think there’s anything wrong with simple villains. But I get what you mean.
      I think what people want are the villains that can’t always be redeemed or villains that have that redemption *earned*; the kind of villains that are threatening, those the audience are *supposed to hate,* or *fear.* Or at least have more screen time to establish them as the clear villain, even if they’re often played down for comedy (or are more-so comedic).
      That’s why when Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came out, people loved Jack Horner & Death, both had enough screen time to establish the kinds of villain they are. One was a selfish business man with comedic moments, almost akin to Hades, King Candy, Yzma, etc.; the other was a recurring danger and posed a serious threat to the main character, which could only be resolved by the true final confrontation (like Lord Shen or Syndrome).
      I think people want villains like that. Instead of a dumb twist villain that gets revealed near the end of the movie (that may or may not be redeemed so quickly), people want villains that are *villains* from the start or *villains* that you root against (regardless of their charm). Redeemable villains need to feel a bit more earned and show signs that they can be redeemed, which some media fails to achieve.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer 20 днів тому +5

      @@Dr.Oofers I can agree to that. I'm not a fan of simple villains (kinda outgrew them as I got older, tbh), but I do think Twist villains are played out for Disney right now. Bellweather was one of the few necessary twists because "Zootopia" was a cop film.
      I agree with the need villains having more screentime. Yokai was underrated because they wanted him to be mysterious before the plot twist, and Namaari was just here and there (and she didn't not do enough for her redemption; I LOVE redeemed villains, but that's hard to do in one film, and by the next one, they've essentially already been labeled by the audience as a bad guy for life)--honestly I could write an essay on how "Raya" could've been a better movie and maybe my favorite Disney movie ever, but that's another discussion entirely, lol.

    The director was the biggest downgrade from the original graphic novel. In the graphic novel she was more cunning and sadistic. Although her backstory was not explored in the graphic novel she was Serviceable. And she was not a human in the graphic novel she was a goblin that has some similarities to a human and the director in the movie is not a good villain. Well the movie is good but it does have it's ups but a few downs and a much lighter take on the graphic novel which was grittier and darker and the film took creative libraries and it was for the good

    The director being in love with the queen while representing homophobia sounds brilliant. Sometimes people discriminate while deep down seeing themselves in what they hate/fear.
    Christian movies do that all the time: if the villain seems to be an atheist and hate christians, it's because deep down he believes in God but hates him.
    Also, Planet of the Apes: Dr. Zaius deems humans as inferior, but deep down he knows they used to rule the world. The human villain from Conquest of The Planet of the Apes downright says that he hates apes because he sees them as symbols of his own wild side which he hates.
    Davy Jones from POTC hates love because he's a scorned lover and he hates that part of himself. Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit hates toons while he is a toon himself.
    So, a homophobic villain being lesbian herself (either closeted or just in denial) is brilliant.

In my opinion, the most impactful line the director had was, " Every night I see the wall crack and crumble and a tide of darkness sweep over the land," yada yada. They should have doubled down on that, portraying her slow descent into madness. Her mask of nobility cracking into the monster who almost blew up thousands of people with a railgun.

  • @NewOrca
    @NewOrca 20 днів тому +12

    I think I found a big issue within the film on why the director does't work, but at the same I kinda get why they made the decision they did.
    Nimona points out in the film that the fault is with the system that put people like the director into power. Where as balister wants to focus on the indivual. With Balister obs having the flawed perspective. Thus resulting not wanting to give to much character to the indivial and emphasising the system more. I wish they focused more on the systems as personally that is more interesting and with the lack of character from the diector not jusifiying her exsistance. But at the same time with the film makers want to make this point they need a figure head for that. I think they should've gone into with one of two ways, devleop the director into a fully fledge villain with character, motivation and such or keep the character to minor roles to serve as that figure head. I would prefer the latter as, Nimona has that personal connection with the issues of the systems with Gloreth. And having a film that focus more on the system is a relatively fresh idea and very much so connects with the LGBTQ+ folks who have to deal with them.
    Also I think thats why I initally didn't mind the lack of character from the director too much at the time. But after some time with the film, hearing others perspectives and doing further anaylsis of the film for a video I plan on making covering the Trans themes, becuase they are sooo good and honestly very rare in western stories which is a massive shame, I do think it could've been better, litterally the same as you felt in your video. Which was great btw!!! Always a joy to watch your content!

    This lady is a bit boring! She is not smart like Jafar or scary like Frollo or entertaining like Facilier or funny like Hades. I never find her funny, intimidating or interresting. We don't know her past, her family, how she became the ruler of the city etc. Heck i can't remember her name, this character is that bland 😟

    She could have been better, undeniably, but she could have been worse. So much worse. I think we are having some villain crisis in animated movies right now, where like disney doesnt even give us any in their movies (i do not see magnifico as one. If anything asha is the villain) or we get something sucky like megamind vs the doom syndicate - maybe because if that i might be thinking "wow, an evil villain that doest completely suck, how awesome", and grab onto that with some copium, but yeah, shes evil. Villains are supposed to be that.
    As somebody who loves and enjoys villain characters i would have preferred if she was ..well...a character. But alas i have to accept what we were given. I do love sympathetic villains too but i think we have gotten so many of them lately, i just want a cool irredeemable bad guy

    Just pausing at the start to say this, because it's a particular hill I will die on... 😁
    The Disney Villain, isn't dead... the Disney Audience has grown up. We aren't kids anymore. We aren't afraid of the monsters under our bed anymore, those Wicked Witches and evil Sorcerers are no longer frightening to us. In fact, we understand them way better now because we have grown up. The motivations of the villains are way more complex now than just power, greed or jealousy. Look back at nearly every classic Disney villain and you realize their motivations are simple and obvious, and that no longer holds up. We have become more nuanced and so have the things that frighten us.
    That's why twist villains are so prevalent now, because the monsters we are most afraid of, aren't snarling vicious beasts, or unknown shadowy figures, they are people. They are the very people that we thought we could trust, the ones that aren't obvious to us. When you don't know who you can trust, that's frightening.

    100% when i watched nimona i actually got confused and paused it multiple times to look up and try to find why the chancellor killed the queen cause i didn't get it wouldn't framing the main character for any murder work and the people make the queen change morals she was just such a simple empty character that i forgot her goals and motivations

    At least Ercole from _Luca_ was entertaining and had personality, despite being an antagonist for the sake of having one with no backstory or anything of the sort. He was an actual character, an actual person. The Director is nothing but a walking "insert antagonist here" placeholder.

    If there is a villain that I love, it would have to be Dio Brando from Jojo's Bizarre Adventures.

    Having a villain that is more realistic is not a bad thing. She represented ignorance and Toxic Traditions. She was over ambitious, Two faced, and manipulating, she did it all relatively smoothly too. in the beginning you had a feeling she was trouble, but she was by the book, and had a holier then thou persona. a person who didn't like change, which is why she didn't like Ballister Blackheart (a knight from the the lower caste). She controlled the people with Fear the fear of the unknown. She is made Ambrosius Goldenloin Evil by proxy during most of the movie with her manipulation tactics. To me she is terrifying. She is human, and unforgiving of her beliefs. Now they did water her down from the book, but they did the same with Nimona too (she was a danger to everyone)

    I'd disagree with you're opinion. Bodi is not that great compere to The Director. I recounted his ranking, and Bodi comes up average, While The Goblin Lady comes up much, much higher.
