- For this round of 73 questions, we have college-athlete Marcos Rico talk about his life as a D1 Swimmer at Cal, how he balances Engineering with athletics and what his post-college plans are.
In all seriousness, about a week ago we hit 10K Subscribers which is freaking insane! So I gave you guys the chance to ask me anything on Instagram and in community post here on UA-cam. Instead of doing a regular sit down Q&A I thought I would change things up and try out this really popular series vogue has called 73 questions - except all the questions (or most of them) are from you guys!!

Premiere Pro has an option to add captions which acts kind of like a template. But their speech recognition algorithm sucks so I have to edit each one haha appreciate you noticing the details!

Nice video and good camera work. Ever done any of the Hawaii summer ocean swim races? There;'s the North Shore Swim Races, and of course the Waikiki Rough Water. You can look them up or ask me for more info. I swim the shorter lengths for sure, and there are lots of good young guys like yourself.

How far could you dive with one breath ?
To be honest never tried pushing my lung capacity. But I would estimate around 3-4min from holding my breath and perhaps 75 yards for distance no breath

As a former D1 swimmer, I think some of these questions deserve more elaborate answers. I'd love to hear Marcos's full take, but here's my $0.02:
*Does being a student-athlete pay for college?* Scholarship availability varies by sport, but the general answer is usually *no* for swimming and more so for men. Only Division 1, non-Ivy schools are allowed to provide athletic scholarships and the vast majority of scholarships available will not cover even half of tuition. I was at a D1 mid-major school and my academic scholarship was 2x my athletic scholarship.
*Where do most student-athletes, specifically swimmers, go after college?* The _vast_ majority retire at the end of college and join their peers in the workforce. You need to be an Olympic or ISL contender to attract sponsorship or prize money and truly be a "professional swimmer".
*Tips for athletes attempting to get into uni?* First and foremost, find schools that are a good fit academically & athletically. I was overestimating my value as an athlete instead of comparing objectively to the current teams' times. Don't expect athletics to help gain admissions unless you're at the top of the current roster. It's important to prioritize academics over athletics, so I always recommend accepting admissions to the great school where you can't compete on the varsity team over the no-name school where you'll set all the records.
