  • There is no easy way to say this. I lost most of my hearing and most of my ability to recognize speech. This is the story so far...

I just happend to have almost the same story as you at the same time (nov 2022 losing my right ear hearing and feb 2023 unable to identify speech in my left ear) And even having the same fate I can't image how you are feeling right now. Be strong and have hope for medical advances in the near future!

Ok so I’ve finished watching this and though I realise it was a long time ago, so much of it resonates with my own experiences of losing all my hearing in 2018 and being implanted the following year. Nothing but respect for you. Am I to assume that during the recording of this you couldn’t hear yourself speak? Your annunciation was perfect as too was your voice level throughout. Would love to type and type and share more about my own story buts it’s not feasible on this platform really. Suffice to say that you’ve obviously come a long way since then….and though the trauma stays with you, I’ve always used it as a source of continued motivation. All I can say however, is that if it wasn’t for Cochlear the company and others, our lives would be totally different. There is as I’m sure you know a big difference between biological and acquired deafness, and it’s arguably the latter where my sense of trauma exists; where the experiences of ‘loss’ transcends hearing itself and becomes very much synonymous with the memories that sound itself has meant to me personally. I salute you and all those who have had to deal with sudden loss of all kinds but especially hearing loss in this context. And thank you Cochlear the company for re immersing back into a world in which being able to hear was my norm since birth. I am both proud to be deaf and hearing at the same time…..and obviously as with many things there are degrees, levels and variants of deaf identity but I’m proud and grateful that I’m an implantee.

The first videos until you get to my first activation video, are all recorded and edited with me being deaf. I used a transcription app during that time that helped out a lot. I would say because I lost my hearing randomly and suddenly I had an advantage to how I sounded. I had a little bit of hearing in one of my ears so I could hear if I shouted but I tried my best to balance off of that ear. I never digested my hearing loss as trauma, as much as I wanted to I just saw it as another part of life that I could either overcome or let it over come me. I will agree with you, Cochlear Americas and all the technology I used during and after my hearing loss made life a lot easier. I cant even manage 10 years ago how hard it would be for people to get by while being deaf and waiting for their implant and activation.
