Electric windows do have a controller for each motor that senses the current. When the window reaches a mechanical limit, the motor slows down and the current goes up. The controller keeps the voltage applied for maybe 1/2 second, then shuts off the motor. Window motors used to have a circuit breaker to avoid high stall current.

    Here's one more:
2 of the windows in my 2007 Nissan Murano stopped working within a few weeks of each other when the weather was hot. My air conditioner was also broken.
I suspect snow fell in the window switch when I rolled the window down that winter.
After thinking about the possible causes for weeks (and looking at the prices for replacement assemblies online), I took the switches out, took them apart, and looked at the contacts. They had black deposits on them from years of overuse, so I sprayed some De-oxit contact cleaner on it and rubbed the black stuff off.
    Worked like a charm.

I have had very few window problems over the years, but all my problems were mechanical - a guide, a roller, or snubber out of adjustment [or broken] allowing the glass to tilt out of good geometry and jamming in the track- registers were fine. The real trick is always how to get the inside door panel off with zero damage to get at things to inspect & fix - some cars require special tools to release snap in style retainers, which work way better than just poking a screwdriver around haphazardly..

I've been doing this for decades. I've had to replace just one window motor...in an Astro with 240,000 miles. One thing I can tell you, sand in the track will cause a lot of problems. This happened to a Jeep, which I just moved on to a guy who saw the diamond in the rough I was offering. Sand had gotten on it from road sand for snow here in Wisconsin. Buggered it all sorts of up. Dead of winter is no time to be putting water on your window tracks unless you're ok with a window frozen shut till May. The grinding was awful and the window motor was straining against the abrasive sand. I knew it was a short time before I moved it on, just needed it to get through this winter.

Scotty, I've found that just tapping the window switch down when they are all the way up just enough to make the window drop less than 1/8" takes the strain off of the window regulator, especially helpful with most newer cars where they use the cable regulator and plastic parts to hold the cable bead. This is especially helpful if the car will be parked for a long time with the windows up.I think it also leaves the motor with a little free play so if the window does stick it can break it loose by giving it a running start when the tension hits the cable. I handle a fleet of vehicles and the windows are always sticking like that, I've been doing the slam the door trick for years. Glad you showed everyone how it's done. One thing you should have mentioned is to do it with the engine running to give higher voltage to the motor. Keep the videos coming. Ha, I like that you listed common sense in the things used in this video but you may need to explain what that is to the millennials or over-educated.
I saw your capacitor jump starter listed too. Aren't they the best thing ever? I got a Schumacher brand 800A and I use it all the time, I used it to start a F550 Super Duty pickup (actually a Bearcat) after something drained both batteries. It fired it up just like the batteries were fully charged. The one you listed is a better deal, mine cost about $200 and it's only 100 amp more.

A longer lasting solution for lubing power windows is the use of PTFE true teflon grease. And to be sure of it lasting very long, also remove the door panels and use a artist paint brush to get the grease into the tracks inside the door. Use Dupont/Krytox GPL 206, It's not cheap but won't wash out, smear windows,or attract dirt.

I’m still a car safety net and now I know Volvo is NOT what they were.
Kids are grown, I’ve been driving a 23-year-old Toyota death trap and when I lost in a parking lot there was another person in the car lot with me looking for his car and he pulled out his keychain and said pull your keychain out and push this button! I pulled out my keys and showed him there were no remotes and I motioned with a circular gesture saying my windows open like this and my keys don’t have a remote or beep anything! He cracked up.

Thanks Scotty, I now know what to look for because I have this problem with my Chevy 2006 Silverado 1500. My lights turn dim when I roll down my windows and there's a weird whistling sound at the front end somewhere's. I can fix those things you mentioned and being aware of my vehicle will encourage me to learn proper maintenance.

If you have one of those moneypit BMW where the window goes down a few inches when you open the door, here's a tip. If the window gets stuck because of ice or other things, the window won't go up and down when you open the door. To reset it push the window down and hold for 5 sec (can't remember the exact time) and then up and hold for the same time and it resets the chip that controlls the windows ( could be up first and then down not sure was a few years ago). Got the tip after having my brand new BMW in the garage 3 times in 2 months to fix the windows. Then they got tired of me and told me how to fix it. Sold the car after 3 years when the warranty was out.

Sounds like an intermittent electrical problem, mabye a bad switch or relay, loose or corroded connectors or wires. The fix will most likely be cheap, finding the fix will be hard, unless you have a multimeter and know how to use it. Which isn't hard or expensive. Scotty has videos on electrical system testing. I recommend trying to learn it yourself so you can troubleshoot other electrical issues, or you could look at the parts list and buy the cheaper parts, relays, switches, sensors etc... and just swap those parts, decent chance it will fix it, but it's better to actually find the problem in case there was something causing the short that will just cause the new parts to fail as well.

Hey Scotty! Very Helpful video. Nothing worse than when the windows don’t work. Especially when the window is down. Usually happens when it’s gonna rain. Yes, spilled my coffee & ruined a whole switch panel on the dash. I. Couldn’t turn the interior lights on. Nice. Thnx, CJ

Dunno how it is in USA, but here in Australia power windows have load and limit switches so the motor just turns off when the window shuts all the way, or if something gets in the way.

The window continuing to push when you hold the button is probably why the driver side window button stopped working in my 2001 Nissan Sentra. I love to drive with my window cracked even when its cold and I would often be pushing the window up or down w/out actually looking. However I'm going go check to make sure its not just sticking first.

I always thought that it was the complicated mechanism, and the varying pressure when you wind up or down.

2:50. No, the motor doesn't get burned out. The motor has self resetting circuit breaker in the circuit to protect it. This is also to protect you if your arms or head gets stuck in the window.

Thanks for the video Scotty. Just got my cat back from my parents where it has been sitting for 6 months. The windows have been sticking a lot and I thought it was the dodgy battery. After a few days of driving it around, the battery is holding charge properly and alternator works under load but the windows were still sticking. Didn't even think to get a can of silicone spray. I guess that is the next step, before hunting around for some replacement window DC motors.

The Liberty has the 3.7 Chrysler engine but still has Dana axles just like the TJ and WJ. No disrespect to your Renegade, it is probably better than the majority of new vehicles.

If you have to replace the switch I recommend shopping around. When one of mine went bad I discovered that some places wanted like $80 for the exact same switch that I could get elsewhere for $30. And I think the dealership wanted well over $100.

Best way to do your “trick” is to roll the glass halfway down and spray between the glass and track. Roll it up and down, then spray again Prevents that nasty overspray. Take it from an auto glass professional with over 30 years experience. Oh yeah, the spray reduces drag when the window moves, thus saving wear and tear on the regulator assembly. Think of it as going down a water slide without the water. You definitely need a slick surface just like the glass does. Lubricate twice a month for good measure. 👍

Hi Scotty! What about rain hitting your power window buttons? I try to keep them dry when opening the door, but on occasion they have gotten wet and I worry how getting them wet might damage them. I usually dry them up as soon as possible with a towel or something.
