Train Waits On Main Line For 2 Trains To Pass On Siding & Ancient Rock RR Overpass, 1899 Rail In Use

  • 3 Trains Converge On Camden Ohio, Longest Train Waits On The Main While 2 Shorter Trains Pass On The Siding In A Row! 2 Of The Trains Knock Down The Signal: Dropping To Red As The Train Passes, 1899 Rail Still In Use With Close Look. 5 Norfolk Southern Trains, 1 CSX Train & RR Crossing Replacements Close Look.
These trains are in Camden, Ohio and Seven Mile, Ohio on the Norfolk Southern Railroad New Castle Sub. We start in Camden where a long Norfolk Southern Railroad double stack intermodal train is waiting for 2 trains to pass on the siding. Both trains pass and we see the signal drop from green to red. I hope by now that most of my viewers know the railroad jargon of "knocking down the signal".
Minutes after the second train passes, the longer train on the main finally comes across the railroad crossing and heads east toward Cincinnati. This train hurries out only to have to stop at 7 Mile, Ohio to wait for another train.
Next we see an ANCIENT ROCK OVER PASS! This is a really cool find. It is between Camden and Eaton, Ohio on this same line. The train passing over it is westbound toward Indiana.
Then we go to 7 Mile, Ohio to watch a fast westbound train hit the railroad crossing and pass our first train that is sitting once again. This time the train is dead due to the crew out lawing. A transport van picked up the crew and took them away. This train is blocking 2 driveways although one of them does have another way out.
We see the railroad crossings that CSX was working on in Hamilton, Ohio and one that NS was working on north of 7 Mile. The crossings were closed to vehicle traffic so I took a close look. Check out the CSX local freight train doing yard work and shoving a long cut of cars. That was pretty cool and some of the graffiti was interesting also. This is actually Part 2 for the video that I made of Eaton, Ohio. The steam train at the end is from my trip to Iowa. That is the Empress steam locomotive on the Final Spike Steam Tour. We had our spots all figured out 30 minutes before the train came. The folks from Trains Magazine were the next ones down behind me. At the last moment the guy walks out and took pictures. We thought we were going to get a clear shot here. We still got some great footage though. Thanks for watching my videos! God Bless and have a great weekend!
Filmed Tuesday, July 9, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Lot of history with the steel plants first introduced in 1857 as North Chicago Rolling Mill then moved to the southside in 1889 merged with 3 other steel mills called Illinois Steel by 1901 was under control on U.S. Steel..the 1970s downsizing bcz shifting markets of steel. At its peak employed over 20,000. In 1992 closed. Solocup purchased in 2004 to construct a factory later dropped it. 1 smalled building left for docking. Now called the lakeside development a new park with wood chips etc.and in 2011 Dave Mathews Band hosted a caravan with a 3day festival with numerous bands and artists where over 100,000 people attended. Crazy history as decades go by. Thanks JT for the video nice steamer and the new kitty!

The Illinois Steel Company was an American steel producer with five plants in Illinois and Wisconsin. Founded through a consolidation in 1889, Illinois Steel grew to become the largest steel producer in the United States. In 1898, several other steel and transportation companies were merged into it to form the Federal Steel Company, itself merged into U.S. Steel in 1901. Hope this answers your question Jawtooth.

This was one of my great escape spots 20+ years ago. The speeds have been reduced for safety reasons but traffic towards
Hamilton was an almost 20 miles of downhill and the ice cream depot was the halfway mark. Trains would roar past doing 60+ with 3 and sometimes 4 trains an hour. Talk about a thrill

The track laid here in 1913, in northeast Montana, that the Soo Line (Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad) was the Illinois Steel Co South Works and has a date stamp of 1892 with 9 hash marks and is stamped 7202 before it. Assuming it is 72 # rail. The inactive part of the track west of Westby, Montana to Whitetail, Montana still has that rail. Watching your videos made me look at it and take pictures of it. The Flaxton, North Dakota to Whitetail, Montana sub has updated rail to a few miles west of Westby to handle 100+ covered hopper car unit trains of grain which originate in my hometown of Westby, Montana.

Another great video JT. I was very interested in the old rail on that siding. On the North York Moors Railway towards Grosmont, until being re laid a few years ago, there was a section of track over a quarter mile long that was relaid during World War 2 which had rails of bullhead design 95lb/yard that had the wording "L. N.E.R. CHICAGO ILLINOIS USA , and dated in the early years of the war. It was in 39 ft lengths which is a length not normally used in the UK as 30,45 or 60ft was the standard. The sound of trains coming down the bank, which is 1 in 49 or approx 2%, was totally different to the usual rhythm of British trains.
Sadly it has now been replaced by cwr in one long length and in concrete sleepers (ties) with flat bottom rail.
I believe that the US rolled rails were made specially for the LNER and were made by a rolling mill in Chicago which only made 39ft rails for the USA market.
Those rails had a long life of over 80 years and would still be fit for use in sidings!

Thank you for this video of the second part of your railfanning on 9 July 2024. This portion of your 9 July 2024 railfanning took place in Camden and Seven Mile, Ohio. It was interesting to watch the two trains taking the siding to pass the double stack train which was sitting on the mainline. You showed us the manufacturer and date of the rail on the siding in Camden, Ohio which was made by Illinois Steel South Works. Here is a link to information on Illinois Steel and South Works in Chicago, Illinois: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Works. That was an unusual bridge that you found in Seven Mile, Ohio. It looks like it is a one lane road. It looks like that road crossing that is going to be rebuilt using rubber pads rather than wood timbers of asphalt. I noticed a pile of rubber inserts at 15:10 in the video. (Posted 12 July 2024 at 1449 CDT.)

Interesting on Illinois Steel, per the web:
Founded through a consolidation in 1889, Illinois Steel grew to become the largest steel producer in the United States. In 1898, several other steel and transportation companies were merged into it to form the Federal Steel Company, itself merged into U.S. Steel in 1901.
Looks like they rolled that rail one year later.

Quick update on the diamond replacement in Greenwich. It is scheduled for this Monday the 15th around noon. I was out there yesterday, both the cranes are in place, a huge pile of stone, back hoes, front end loaders, etc. Foreman said if all goes well, could have 1st train through in about 5 hours once they start.

NS calls east end Camden Prebble and the west end of the siding Barnett. It’s been a while since I’ve been out to Camden. I’ll have to get back out there again soon! If you want, go to the east side of the tracks and the view is great! It’s a nice open field. You’re probably filming into the sun though because it’s the later afternoon into the evening! I enjoyed the video on the New Castle District! Hope to see you around!

I don't know why they were short that day. I have filmed some 2 mile long trains on that line. On that day they had been doing work at the crossings and the line was shut down half the day. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. It was unusual though for them all to be short

In 1970, PC had 4 routes into Cincinnati. The busiest was Little Miami route(PRR), next busiest was Dayton-Middletown(NYC), next busiest was Cincy-Indy(NYC) and the LEAST busy route was this line called the Richmond branch(PRR).
Today the Richmond branch is by far the busiest route and the Little Miami is long gone.
    My how things can change.

Try the Italian sub at the "Depot" carry out joint, it's good. The building under construction is supposed to be a large sports bar.
The depot also has a very old photo of the original depot that stood there over 100 years ago. The depot standing is an old house they moved there in the early 70's.
Go to Campbellstown, just west of Eaton, NS removed a track through the burg and extended/lengthened the siding to the east. They also straightened out some of the track.
In the past, they may have ran more trains, but I bet the tonnage through here is at an all time high. Amazing since they(PC) quit through trains here in 1974.
