Or translated it’s called type 3 shell. Anyways this thing is very unstable and suffered ammo detonation a lot. Sister ship of Nagato, Mutsu died to ammo detonation, and this thing was in there in the large numbers. It is a shell that detonated and split into many incendiary shrapnels for max effect. The Yamato version could split into 3000 pieces of shrapnel during the shell test.

When you're talking about "shooting shrapnel from a cannon," it does exist, it's called a "canister shot." Basically, it's a gigantic shotgun shell fired from a tank. It has a delayed fuse, where shortly after leaving the barrel, it disperses a few hundred pellets the size of ball bearings straight forward. It is mainly used for anti-personnel and anti-vehicle (trucks and light armor and the sort). It really only has an effective range of maybe 150-200 meters or so, given the cloudlike spread.

They actually do have shells that perform like a giant shotgun! It's called a 'canister round' and was most notably used by the americans in the pacific.
Shrapnel shells usually have a small explosive charge to eject the sub projectiles. Most shells eject to the front, while some few eject to the back. The advantage is that unlike Canister which acts like a Shot Shell, Shrappy's have a delay fuse so you can if you wish, wing them out over enemy formations before they initiate. Shrapnel is of no use against Armored fighting vehicles, however if there is a Tank carrying a squad of Infantry, it will do a fine job of dealing them out.

Phlee, some tanks do have shotgun-like shells (called canister shot) used to clear infantry off another tank. In other words, the perfect counter to “no armor is best armor”.
Gotta correct you Fly :) Shrapnel shell isn't designed to penetrate. Thus the low pen. The actual shell is made from softer material with more aggressive explosives. Its anti infantry shell. Its pretty much lobbing Hand grenades at people. So it has better balistics from the same cannon because its lighter, but also carries less energy, and its softer so it deforms on impact more. Ironically most penetration comes from the explosives at point blank range. Shells have inner grooves usually so they shrapnel more efficiently. Oh have some sort of shotgun charge inside. The shells walls are thicker so it has more shrapnel thus the lower HE content. Its not intended to Kill any vehicle, only people and occasionally clear bunkers and field artillery.
The "shotgun" shell you're thinking of is called a canister round. Used a bunch in Vietnam by both US tanks, and arty if they were getting over run. They lower the elevation to zero and fire pretty much a 105 or 155mm shotgun.
The Japanese do in fact have a shell which explodes into shrapnel: Type 3 HEDF shells used in naval guns was basically steel and thermite rods packed into an HEDF shell. Terrible against planes, but proved lethal in coastal bombardment.

Some tanks had Canister shells, basically giant buckshot. It was used for close range anti-infantry, but I suppose you could hit a plane if you were lucky.
The Japanese actually had a type of shell called Sanshikidan or bee hive shell that was absolutely stuffed with incendiary tubes and shrapnel (for the 46cm Guns on the Yamato no less!), that was used to shoot down aircraft. They’d burst into thousands of metal fragments and the incendiary tubes would ignite, producing a fantastic pyrotechnics display in a 20 degrees arc at 30,000 feet. Hey Phly, you were asking about shotgun shells for tanks in this video and in real life they do exist. For example the US has a Tungsten Ball Bearing Round the M1 Abrams uses. Its primary function is for anti-infantry and structure damage, however crews found its very effective against nearby helicopters and low flying aircraft. Who knows they may see the game one day.

Shrapnel is a WWI {pre-WWI invention) HE shell with a time fuse intended to be used against infantry. The small charge of explosive is to burst the shell and spread the ball bearings in the shell to cause mass casualties to infantry (who in WWI operated in mass formations at the beginning of the war) and field guns. The French '75 used it as its main ammunition. It has a thin casing, ball bearings, explosive and a fuse with (according to the information in the WIKI page on the T28) up to an 8 second delay. HE is shown to have a much larger load of HE as it relied on the fragmentation of the casing for its fragmentation effect. HE could be fired in airburst as well but it was difficult to determine the fuse delay to have the shells explode the right distance above the target. The French 75 ammunition was expected to be fired at targets the gun crew could see. Why the shell has such a high penetration is a mystery to me. It isn't armor piercing and I would think it should break up hitting any armor 12mm or thicker. The Russians used it as HE.

(Deets as to why in discord vid req) (10th attempt) Also, shooting shrapnel is a cool idea but also an illegal idea. Geneva convention disallows use of flechette rounds in tanks due to the inhumanity of the weapon.
It doesn't function the way it did in real life, but a shrapnel shell was in a really dumbed down sense a canister shell that had a greater range. It was very commonly used by artillery units in WWI and the inter-war years which is why you see it in the early war tanks. The shell was for anti-personnel use and was more effective than the HE shells that were also in use. The shell contained metal fragments that would be ejected from the shell at a predetermined point above the ground. This provided for the same effect as canister shot over greater distances and at steeper angles. A misconception is that the HE filler would cause the shell to have a shotgun effect. The filler was merely to disperse the metal fragments from the round; most of the fragments' energy came from the firing of the rounds themselves and their ballistic trajectories. themselves
Grapeshot, or canister rounds have existed for centuries, and are semi common even now (flechette) and while technically designed for low aircraft, etc. It makes mincemeat of flesh.
I used these shells for a bit during the very low tier to the tank showed in the beginning of the video, but I used other types of rounds that are more effective at killing tanks
I remember using these shells on t-28 way back after the game launched, I loved 1 shotting enemy tanks back when it would Pen the tanks in that rating, nowadays it feels you get too many tanks where its hard to pen at all

The tank shotgun shells are called canister shots Phly so they do indeed exist. Some modern MBTs like M1 use them against infantry
Phly, play the french amx 13 with the 90mm gun
It doesn't function the way it did in real life, but a shrapnel shell was in a really dumbed down sense a canister shell that had a greater range. It was very commonly used by artillery units in WWI and the inter-war years which is why you see it in the early war tanks. The shell was for anti-personnel use and was more effective than the HE shells that were also in use. The shell contained metal fragments that would be ejected from the shell at a predetermined point above the ground. This provided for the same effect as canister shot over greater distances and at steeper angles. A misconception is that the HE filler would cause the shell to have a shotgun effect. The filler was merely to disperse the metal fragments from the round; most of the fragments' energy came from the firing of the rounds themselves and their ballistic trajectories. themselves
34mm of pen with each of the 69 shells you carry, giggedy. (Rule 34 and the number 69)
Grapeshot, or canister rounds have existed for centuries, and are semi common even now (flechette) and while technically designed for low aircraft, etc. It makes mincemeat of flesh.
Phly, please play Panzer IV H,the best vehicle on WarThunder
