I recall reading the back pages of the Mirror one day in the summer he left. As a very young Liverpool fan I was gutted. He was talking about how he hoped to bring cans of baked beans with him to Italy. Then Aldridge came along and all was forgotten. I was never sure about his return to Liverpool 2 years later though and was slightly disappointed his Juventus days never worked out because I obviously loved him as a player.

The final goal, against Torino, was brilliant and especially considering it was in the eighty-eighth minute with the score at one all.

Absolutely! That is the type of goal, that most people think is nothing special, but for anyone who has played football, or any fast paced sport, it is clear how hard this technique is. Incredible control (a bit lucky it has to be said), a quick 180 degree turn and a volley right in the bottom corner. And as You said, the fact that it is the winning goal in the last minutes of the Turin derby, makes it even better. Furthermore, not only are the teams great city rivals, but in this particular season they were battling it out for the last European spot. Back then the Serie A season consisted of only 30 games and only 2 points were given for a win. So the competition was even harder than today. This goal gave Juve a vital win two games before the season's finale. In the end both teams ended up on equal points, and there was a decisive UEFA Cup qualification match. It was held at the Stadio Comunale Vittorio Pozzo in Turin, on 23/5/1988 with Juve winning on penalties to qualify for Europe.

Rush had a poor team around him which didn’t help. Sure he didn’t succeed but he gave it a go. He wasn’t the only big name to struggle in Italy in the 80s just look at Mark Hately, Enzo Scifo, Rudi Voeller, etc.

@@greenfields1221There are loads of surprising examples. Kluivert failed at Milan as well.

Rush failed in Italy no matter what Liverpool fans try to tell you. That's why he came running back after just one season instead of proving himself out there.

Agreed. His return pushed Aldridge out who was in my opinion at that time better than Rush for LFC.
