I'm waiting for my pledge and can't wait to paint this. The challenge to me is for so many years of painting fantasy with the European/Tolkien influence with mostly browns with highlights here and there an Asian theme means bright colors everywhere! I'm looking at pictures of Buddhist and Hindu temples for inspiration for now.
I hope you get it soon! I had the same issue in the fact that I didn't even own a lot of the bright paints needed. Had to go out and buy several of the colors here including the orange. It's a lot of fun though and a challenge for me as I prefer and lean toward darker painted minis. Just got done painting the Oni of Skulls and he literally has bright pink flowers on a bright green cloth :D Hope to have him published tomorrow!
Thank you very much! Less steady than you'd think. I just go really slow instead :) Also, "average" is in the name for a reason. Anything you see me do you can do as well!
After scouring UA-cam videos while waiting for my Rising Sun KS to arrive, I discovered your videos and have been seeing more and more of them. I have to say, I really like your channel, the way you narrate and edit videos is so good! Please keep up the awesome work, so I can continue to enjoy these beautiful minis paintings! On that note, do you have any tips or videos for someone who might like to start painting? Maybe you could make a video for that, showing your materials, collection, etc. I have literally 0 idea how to start, besides going to my local board game store and asking around lol
That is wonderful to hear, I am so glad you have enjoyed my videos! I might do some proper tutorials in the future but honestly I've only been painting for about half a year now so this is more of a "journey" you guys can witness and follow along with. Not sure I have the confidence to actually think I could teach this stuff. That being said, I have "average" in my name for a reason. There are a lot of pro painters here on YT that I could never dream of mimicking. On this channel, if you see me do it then you can too so don't think you can't! And as for some wonderful tutorial videos: I LOVE these from P3: ua-cam.com/play/PLOHvZQUaO4kfNV6-gObM3sPXisSpcphnE.html Warhammer TV for some paint specific techniques (watch in reverse order of playlist): ua-cam.com/play/PLEaPE4sLDA7s-26V0v6SepDFiznb3y6hx.html
there are a ton of how to videos here on youtube, for me on of the best is ua-cam.com/users/paintingbuddha Ben Komets shows you a ton of techniques to help every stage of painter, beginner to expert. don't get me wrong he makes it look easy, but with practice and patience these video help
I gotta say, I laughed out loud at the end :) I feel your paint man - there have been times when I've tossed the mini off my painting table. I should have kept a blooper reel, though I'd have to rate the video "for mature audiences only" with all the profanity haha
Another terrific episode. Looking up some of the names for my set, they are based in real mythology. But Daimyo just means a landowner under a shogun. So I guess they are captains under the head guy. So unless we get an actual name thats all there is. I wished CMON had gone into the naming etc a little more. ;)
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah that's why the leader of each clan is a Daimyo and you are all fighting until the Kami all come in Winter to put an end to the feuding :) Sadly you are right, CMON didn't name any of these clansmen special or unique, and the art book has no descriptions at all.
I know that it is a big no-no for miniatures but I paint the base of Rising Sun minis in the color of their clan and I also try to choose a color scheme where the color of their clan dominates in the mini. In this case, I would choose green. I know it goes against the golden standard of black base rims and it might even go against the artistic freedom or even the pictures provided in the rulebook ... but these minis are for play, first and foremost. So you have to be able to tell the clan by a glance, you will need to judge the numbers advantage in territories so you need to help players with visual cues to do that.
Really glad to hear you enjoyed the video! I use the Citadel Painting Handle: amzn.to/2tgIAac It works with minis up to 40mm bases and I do not miss using putty and corks! :P
Do you do any sealant or anything to the grass after you apply it? Or is the PVA glue enough to hold it down? And are you doing grass and a checkered base for all clans? Or are you trying to base clans with materials that match their clans colors?!
Good questions. What you see in the video is what I do, so no sealant after the grass. I've never had issue with it coming off, just don't go light on the glue :) For the rim of the base, it will always match the clan color. When I do the Bushi for instance they will be solid green for the Turtle Clan. The tops of the bases will be a different for each one however.
Michael the Clans and this Daimyo are actually sacred clans and "god likE" and definitely not totally human. They are brought to Japan by the Kami themselves who are displeased with the affairs of the current Shogun and have returned from the underworld That's the premise of the game and it has it's roots in Japanese mythology which is interesting by itsel. Btw Are we going to see on your chanel each and every single one of Rising sun miniatures painted with it's own video? If so that is simply awesome :)
Very interesting, thank you for the info! As for the videos, it is a goal of mine to paint them all, however realistically that will take a very long time!
I know hats off in advance, would love to see you make it though and thus be probably the only guy who will do it in this fashion (even if it takes longer) In any case really big thanks for all the future Rising Sun videos you make they are joy to watch and I learn a lot from them!
Absolutely, you are the reason I even decided to start painting from scratch and no history of any art stuff except primary school haha so yeah definitely Michael!
You don't need any of that stuff which is the whole point :D I also don't have any art history (CS major here). Heck, I'm partially color blind in oranges and blues. If I can do it anyone can. I am very glad to hear you took the plunge, it is a very fun and rewarding hobby, and then when people find out you painted them yourself it's always impressive!
It's the Citadel Painting Handle. It's frequently out of stock, but I lucked out and got it the day they stocked it in store before it ran out. It's quite nice and it's cheap so they go quick, best of luck! www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Citadel-Painting-Handle-2017
I'm incredibly glad you enjoy them and find them useful! There's a reason the channel name isn't The King of Professionals - I'm just a average dude so if I can do it so can you :)
Good question! I only mention it briefly, it is Testors Glosscote: amzn.to/2CXUgyo Works great, can use indoors, and doesn't actually smell too bad or strongly. I need to get the mattecote soon as well.
So I use a matte varnish by Citadel for all of my miniatures, only adding the gloss coat for metals/jewels. Here is they previous version but they did just replace it with a new one: amzn.to/2HyYNdU I've never had a problem with it as some claim and I like that it comes in such a large can.
I asked that question because you said that most of the time you use the Matte spray and then touch up with the gloss brush on varnish. But you mentioned you also wanted to pick up some Matte brush on varnish so I assumed you would use that after applying a spray gloss varnish.
And one more question (thank you for being so responsive here in the chat...makes me one step closer to checking out yr Patreon page : ). I was thinking of only fully painting the Monsters and just using a Nuln Oil wash on all of the small clan figures. In that case is there such a thing a Spray on Clear Primer?
The frustration was worth it. This turned out amazing
Thank you for the kind words! I am pleasantly surprised it looks good as well :D
The grass makes it awesome!
I agree! This is my first time using it and I really like it. Super quick and easy to do as well.
Awesome job King, amazing what you are able to do with such a small miniature!
Thanks! It took some time for sure, hence the longer video and I was fighting uphill with these brushes but it was worth it in the end :D
Keep up the great work! I've been painting my Rising Sun set !
Thanks! Glad you like it :) I'll be painting a dragon soon :D
I don't know how you can paint a miniature so tiny with that precision. Amazing.
Thank you so much for the kind words! If I can do it then so can you. I am only average after all ;)

wow amazing job, you must have really steady hands for the tiny details. way better than i could do.
Thank you very much! Less steady than you'd think. I just go really slow instead :)
Also, "average" is in the name for a reason. Anything you see me do you can do as well!
I'm having a hell of a time trying to paint the eyes on the clan models!
Right? They are so small and half the time they are not fully exposed either. Rough stuff for sure :D

"I feel your paint man..."
No pun intended? 😁
@@thepikay4378 Oh wow - that typo was not deliberate - but appropriate haha
Very good video! I like your style more and more!
Super glad you enjoy the newer format!
Ty for doing one of the clans, will you do one of the KS strongholds also?
I hope to! :)
What do you think of my strategy for the rim of the base? Also, why are these guys gray and with horns?
base really pops. looks great. they almost look like Ogres or something.
Another terrific episode. Looking up some of the names for my set, they are based in real mythology. But Daimyo just means a landowner under a shogun. So I guess they are captains under the head guy.

@Jodran Dyksley Thank you I liked that grass as well! Ogres could work for sure.

Luving yr vids and commentary. Perfect in my opinion, no dross. Anyway what tool is that that you are using to hold the mini?
Really glad to hear you enjoyed the video! I use the Citadel Painting Handle: amzn.to/2tgIAac

What is the miniature holder that you have the mini set on?
It's the Citadel Painting Handle. It's frequently out of stock, but I lucked out and got it the day they stocked it in store before it ran out. It's quite nice and it's cheap so they go quick, best of luck! www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Citadel-Painting-Handle-2017
The King of Average thanks so much for the quick reply. I've just been sticking minis on old pill bottles.
Of course! I started the same, you'll see the pill bottle in my earlier videos, upgraded to a cork and now have this that I'm quite happy with :)
I'm enjoying your vids. Keep up the good work! I'm really scared to start painting rising sun. But these are helping!
I'm incredibly glad you enjoy them and find them useful! There's a reason the channel name isn't The King of Professionals - I'm just a average dude so if I can do it so can you :)
What is the Varnish that your brush on after you Spray seal it? Thanks!
