    I started painting miniatures 5 months ago. Since then I've seen hundreds of videos and DIY tips. After finding out why you call yourself king of average, I have to say you are hardly an average painter and mentor for those of us learning. Thank you for your hard work and honesty. Please continue the rising sun series, lol it may be the only way I get the darn thing painted.

      Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope I can act as encouragement for everyone. If I can do it, so can anyone :)
      Rising Sun will continue to be the main focus of the channel for some time to come :)

    Thanks for these videos, I feel you strike the perfect balance of something that looks great but is also achievable by mere mortals. I’d been thinking about taking up painting since backing Rising Sun but it’s your videos that finally got me to attempt it.

      This is so awesome to hear - really glad I was able to show you what can be done by us Average Joes! Seriously though, that's exactly why "Average" is in the name. There's a lot of really professional people on YT painting miniatures that are fun to see and watch but completely out of reach. Trust me when I say if I can do it you can too :)

      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      Thank you! Really glad you like it! I debated a bit about the length but honestly, I couldn't have shortened it anyway without speeding it up so fast it becomes unusable or skipping parts which I didn't want to do either.

    I'm almost finished with this one. just need to dry brush the texture paint and do the rim. I agree with your assessment, painting the ball first was a much better idea. I love the way the tail came out for me and the tendrils. love going from the dark red to the orange to yellow and blending those. it really does make it pop a lot. Was a difficult model from the set and time consuming but definitely worth taking the time to paint it. Loved the video and the thoughtful comments about it. I really love dragons but was not looking forward to painting this since I was afraid I'd really mess up. I'm glad I didn't and your vid helped me out some.

    Also I want to take a quick moment to thank ALL OF YOU. Seriously, this video alone took 100% of my time for days to complete but you all make it worth it! I appreciate your continued support and comments

      The King of Average hi why do you prime everything in grey? I see a lot either black or white for what reason do u use grey?

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому +1

      That's a good question! So here's why:
      Properly thinned, the paints we use are slightly transparent, meaning the color underneath it shows through. What this means without going into techniques or details is that it is slightly harder to paint dark colors over white and much harder to paint lighter colors over black. Now unless you are using several layers, a miniature primed in white will come out actually brighter than a miniature painted in black.
      Gray is a good in-between. I don't care to "save a step" by using a colored version, and I like my miniatures on the darker side so I chose gray instead of white. When starting out however, it can be very helpful to prime in black as that helps "cover up" parts that are missed with paint which can happen as it just looks shadowed. White will make it stick out like a sore thumb.
      Hope that helps! :)

    I've had decent luck using an old brush to apply the liquid green stuff where I need it (damp, not wet though). Use the pointy tool once you have enough located on your gap area. As an alternate you can fill with super glue and then work low some bicarbonate (baking soda for those of us in the US) for an instant dry/set.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      The superglue idea scares me becuause I feel I'd mess it up, but I love the idea of just "painting" it on!

    • @jonhammersley1529

      The King of Average painting it on makes application much easier/smoother and removes some of the clean up work needed later.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому +1

    How do you go about picking your colors to use? I'm fairly new to all this and it seem kind of daunting

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      Awesome congrats! Over time you get a sense of what colors will look like when finished after various techniques and shades. However, it does take some time. I reference the concept art and actually plan out the paint to be used, putting it on my wet pallet to see the true color as needed. That's the list I include in each video description actually :) To me, it's kind of a puzzle in a way which I actually enjoy.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому +1

      Essential? No, but neither is trimming the mold lines. IMO, if you are going to spend time on it you might as well go "all in", but everyone is different on what they are willing to do it have time for :)

    • @DethCricket
      @DethCricket 6 років тому +1

      No it is not essential at all... it is a matter of how much time and effort you want to put into a mini and if seams and gaps bother you.

    Another terrific episode. I'm just about to start my rising Sun and this is good inspiration. FWIW, I've given up on Liquid Greenstuff when I found Vallejo Plastic Putty. The great thing is that VPP comes with a needle nose applicator and washes up with water. it's all I use for gaps now. ;)

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      To me it seemed a LOT like the liquid green stuff, just in a dropper which is always nice. That's not meant for big gaps at all. Even citadel's just sinks into large gaps and I can scrub it off easy enough with my tool when "hardened"

  • @bartekkucharski3880
    @bartekkucharski3880 6 років тому

    Watched, this should be a nice challenge. Firstly in my collection I have only one Valleo colour so I ll be turning to citadel alternatives for most of this figure and I think I might try a few things differently. Will do this figure sometimes this week. Thanks a bunch for the video, was really joy to watch!
    P.S. I ll do the ball first :P

    • @TheKingofAverage

      Smart move on that ball ;) look forward to seeing how it turns out! What are you thinking of changing?

    • @lokihve6591
      @lokihve6591 6 років тому

      The Ball because I already did the River Dragon and want to continue the "metal theme" of the balls and the tendrills in some different colour probably. Will see . So nothing wrong with this dragon, I think it looks absolutely fantastic and I will try to follow most of it, just will have to substitute the Vallejo colours with citadel ones (so thats a bit of a challenge) and like mentioned those two bits I am thinking doing a bit differently :)

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      Oh okay very cool. I definitely did mine with only a hint of metal and then gloss coated it. Honestly, I was *this* close to painting it silver as I thought that'd look cool and really pop but I didn't want it to "pop" because then that would be the focus being so bright.

    • @lokihve6591
      @lokihve6591 6 років тому

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      That's actually a cool idea. I went the opposite where I want all three balls to be different. It's nice that it's not in the concept art so we can do whatever we want with them :D

      As for Vallejo vs. GW, GW have fantastic texture paints and washes as well as some unique colors, but if I can help it I always go Vallejo. Cheaper, fantastic paint, and easy to store and put on the palette.

    Looking at the picture I can't tell if those flame-shaped protrusions are light gold metal or just ordinary sandy yellow. It looks like they have some metallic shine but I'm not sure. Wish I had the art-book...

      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому +1

      Ah good idea! I might just do that as a personal challenge. I'm actually quite upset with her as I find her sculpt design bad compared to this one. I like her herself, but she wouldn't need a stupid pole if they had her clothes simply drape down to the base like they did with the Oni of Spite. Would have impacted the visual design approximately 0% and made painting it a better experience 10 fold. - I'll give it some thought!

    • @drgnmstr44
      @drgnmstr44 4 роки тому

      I painted that one. Agree the stupid pole is dumb. I just painted it black to match the base. I'm going to go back and texture the base later to try and hide the pole some or do something with it.

      I'm really glad you like it thank you! You are the first person to comment on the music so really glad to hear that :) For the River dragon, while he doesn't have much of a base to do, my current plan is use Valhallan Blizzard to create "waves" and then paint it all blue then highlight them up and put regular Valhallan Blizzard for froth on top.

  • @桜場娃夜
    @桜場娃夜 6 років тому

    Yep, it does really sound like it was frustrating. Which leads me to a question : how do you decide which part, which color to paint first, and the order after that ?

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  6 років тому

      Here's what I generally try to do: deepest point of the model to the outside of the model (layers of clothes on skin for example), and from the bottom to the top.
      The reason this doesn't always happen is I also try to balance switching paints too often as it dirties the brush more with lots of swapping, so sometimes there will be a base color deep that is also a highlight for a outside or top detail. As I paint I try to balance this with what makes sense for the individual model.

      Good question! Since this video I've started labeling them in my paint lists in the description. For this video it's only Citadel and Vallejo paints. Both paint very well, however I prefer the dropper style containers over Citadel's pots. Since this video I've used a lot of Army Painter paints and they are very comparable to Vallejo.

    Do you use any kind of special brush when you do the buffing on the base?

      By buffing do you mean applying the wash? If so no, I use the regiment brush since it had a large belly that holds a lot. The brushes I use (linked in description) are not expensive but ate still very nice. I've used them for every video and only just replaced them and that's just because I'm not super great at cleaning then right after a paint session.

    @The King of Average - roll your green stuff into a very thin strip and then lay that in the seam. For small patches, put a small ball on your thumbnail and cut off little pieces as you need to apply them. Water, or even better, some lip balm on your tools can help with the sticking on your tools. Rub some balm on the back of your off-hand, then rub your tool tip in that area before touching the GS. This will get your GS buttery smooth as you spread it.
