Mustang Sally (Live Cover) - Mack Rice/Wilson Pickett - Rumpus Machine - Classic Rock Band

- Mustang Sally is an awesome rock soul rhythm and blues song originally written by Mack Rice in 1965. It was then covered by Wilson Pickett in 1966 where it gained more popularity. Many artists have covered the song and in 1991 it appeared as the film soundtrack in the movie The Commitments. The song uses an AAB layout 24 bar structure and we love the solid groove, gritty powerful vocals and backing and the bluesy guitar interwoven though the song!
Inspiration for the song came when Mack Rice was visiting singer Della Reese, who was considering buying a new Lincoln Continental for her drummer and band leader Calvin Shields for his birthday. Rice and other band members were teasing Shields about the pending gift, and Shields replied that he did not want a Lincoln; he wanted a Ford Mustang. Rice had never heard of the Mustang, which had just come out, but he teased Shields about wanting a smaller car. He decided there might be a song in the situation, changing it to be about a woman who doesn't want to do anything but ride around in her new car. Rice called the early version "Mustang Mama," but changed the title after Aretha Franklin suggested "Mustang Sally" because he used the name Sally in the chorus.
Rumpus Machine is a sibling rock band playing live classic rock music and original songs! We are brothers and sisters from Auckland in New Zealand. We like to learn and perform new songs together and play modern music and classic rock songs. We also write our own original songs too and publish to Spotify & Apple Music etc. We like to play live if we can - but also enjoying sharing our music online. We like to learn the new songs and polish them up as much as we can before we decide they’re ready to video and share. It’s gives us something to aim for and it’s also good to have for the future.
Ashley on drums and Hannah on the bass are twins and 13 years old. Matthew on guitar is 15 and Daniel on guitar and lead vocals is 16. Thanks for watching!

Wilson Picket was all the rage when this small town boy moved to the big city of Toronto in 1966. Thanks for the memories and great to see all the smiles back and forth having fun with it. And Hannah, never seen you shine like this, made my day!

@@rumpusmachinenz Btw, since you use the Boss ME-80 pedal-boards your guitar sound is absolutely perfect - so much better than before with the Zooms (?) which sometimes sounded a bit thinny. Maybe you should endorse Boss/Roland (since you also use Roland Drums which sound awesome as well). Your videos really are a very good advertisment for these pedals. Just as an idea :-)

……was that smiles by all band members and was that harmonization that I just heard……??? I do believe so !!! It’s okay to have fun you guys, that’s why you should be playing in the first place. Love the improvements in background vocals (everyone’s a critic, right…..😉). No, I just felt that it’s important to let you, the band, know that we, the audience, are noticing the harmonies have been greatly improved (listen to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys or even The Four Seasons for great examples of how its done…….seriously, take a listen). Which……..opens up an entire different catalogue of music you can perform !!!! How’s the keyboard coming along and when am I gonna hear something from The Police ????? (remember drummer, sharp, clean, and a tad harder hits on any Police covers. The drummer from The Police is amongst the percussionist elite and might be one to learn advanced techniques from). It is so much fun to watch and hear your progression and I think I speak for all of us watching, that we wish nothing but the best for Rumpus Room and Dad too !! You’re sounding pretty snazzy lately. 😎

Hi there, thanks for the feedback and great you’re noticing improvements here and there.. the vocal harmonies are great fun and really add gloss to songs.. we love them.. dans still fiddling with piano but no solid plans yet as to playing a song with piano.. it’s busy at the mo with lots of gigs and songwriting competitions.. but yes one day there could be something!
