      Marek was already going to be given the win. *Logan wasn't going to be allowed to finish the match.* Marek didn't want to win the match that way because Logan was winning and was going to win the match anyway (as per Marek). So it was either take the win ONLY because of a technicality (or fluke injury) and not because he earned it, OR give the win to the better wrestler that day, which was Logan. Marek decided honor and integrity were more important than having another "W" on his record.

I was at this tournament to see it live. Though I never knew it made national headlines. I was not surprised to see him do this because of the amazing character Marek is. Makes me feel old at only 23 years old to think he's a senior now. Mr. Bush did such a good job with all of us. We won with honor and lost with it as well. So proud of this young man. This made me tear up. As a wrestling fan for 40 years, I've seen an awful lot go down at tournaments, not all of them so good, especially as the generations changed and it became more about pure winning instead of sportsmanship and having fun. And this amazes me! Weak? No kid; you're not weak. You have the strength of David and Samson combined! It takes a strong man to do the right thing! And so went a good deed in an unjust world. And I think God in his Heaven smiled just a bit that day!

      adam glover I also wrestled in hs but I would be mad if I didn’t win, in this case I mean. Yes I would understand if I was just handed the win but this situation was not like that at all. He was winning and an injury that imo should have stopped the match happened I’d be upset that I’d lose. So I see what you’re saying and I agree on most situations but I think this one is a little different

    • @kristophergalvez
      @kristophergalvez 5 років тому +33

      Wrestling is a competitive sport. And like all competitive sports, if you're handed a free win it never feels great, but think of the other side. Merick was handed a free win and he refused it. Logan, who was winning was given the win out of respect for being ahead. It may not be the win he imagined but it was still a well deserved one.

      I wrestled and played football in HS. Now as a 42 YO man I understand that this kids example is more rewarding than a win. But everyone has their own opinion on the matter and they are entitled to it. God convicted his heart to be compassionate and Marek sacrificed his own glory to allow another competitor to shine. Look what happened in the end…Mareks story made the news for it so it was the right decision.

    Unless you are a high school and college wrestling fan - a true fan, you won't understand that wrestlers are a different breed of athlete. I raised a Pennsylvania wrestler from age four. 26 years later, he is still friends with everyone with whom he stepped on the mat. There is so much friendship and respect for each other. This story doesn't surprise me - these boys are true wrestlers. In fact, especially when my son was in elementary school, we used to have to find our boys who were wrestling in the finals at so many tournaments - only to find them running around playing together. All the parents, especially Moms, were close - almost like sisters; we were together every weekend at tournaments all year and looked out for each other's kids. Every boy called each of us Mom. If they lost, another surrogate Mom would usually help them through the loss. They didn't want their Mom (and usually especially their Dad - nothing against Dads, but they needed Mom sometimes). My son will be 30 years old, and I miss those crazy kids so much. I never knew after a wrestling tournament that I wasn't bringing home kids that weren't mine, and none of us cared. We loved those boys as though they were our own. I'll never forget after a Regional MAWA Tournament, I brought home 6 kids from different schools, and what a fun night it was with these 12-year-old boys having fun together at my house. They were just boys from all over PA; these kids were such close friends. They all just wrestled each other; winners and losers didn't matter; the tournament was over, and now they were spending the rest of the weekend together as 6th-grade boys -- they were friends and cared about each other. All of these years later, they still do remain friends. As I said, there is NOTHING like a wrestler - they are special. It's always been my favorite sport, and I'm a proud wrestling Mom. I miss it so much, and I miss my other wrestling Mom friends. I'm looking forward to my grandson wrestling in two years!

      Most of the time, wrestling wont let you just stop. My friend used to wrestle(came from a school that was basically only good at wrestling) and he accidentally broke his opponent's nose at state. They wouldn't stop the match so he had to continue. He won but dislocated his shoulder a few matches later and they wouldn't stop his match either.
