Great repair! I feel your pain and exhaustion on opening and buttoning things up...it tires me as well! The reel falling off was funny and a great shot....your lighting in this video was spot on. ~Jack, VEG
@17:05, traction between the capstan and the pinch roller is inconsistent along that capstan-pinch contact line. Every millisecond portions of tape (near to us) are micro-slipping through faster (due to take-up tension) than the far side, which is why the tape 'rides up' as shown. The pinch roller needs careful 'sanding' (and IPA cleaning after, maybe some Rubber Renue) in situe, or replacng. Hope you were able to repair this.
Just FYI these players have a disengagement protection system that will automatically stop the machine and it will not even start at all unless you have reels mounted on the player and tape threaded. It has tension sensors. Nothing wrong with the player - you need tape on it to use it.
Just a note. The spring you put on is redundant. The arm has to come off like others pointed out. It is frozen solid and small kitchen propane torch will do the trick in seconds. The spring you see on the bottom with a sleeve on it is there to do the job. Also the screw you drilled out will be stripped every time no matter what screw driver you will use. There is a nut on the back of that screw with nice amount of loctite. You use a wrench from the bottom and the screw driver just holds the tension from the top till loose. Those filings you got all over should have been contained with a rag under the drill job. At least you did a video man that will help some others including the comments. Keep it up.
They have tiny little straw attachments for vacuum cleaners (Shark has one I like as part of a kit made for cleaning keyboards/PC's), and also the Metro Data Vac built intentionally for servicing and cleaning electronics - would be the best thing to use in this instance. @@3dsmaxrocks699
That long arm that pivots on the right side must be removed cleaned and greased . Mine was so tight I had to heat it for several minutes. The roller should snap into place quickly with authority.
Duuuuuuude, spot on. I used my soldering iron to heat up the arm, popped right off after about ten minutes. cleaned and oiled it and everything works so smoothly now. Thanks
I bought this model machine and tore it down today. Every moveable part was no longer moveable due to hardened grease and oil. You will need to remove every part that pivots and has an e-clip. You can use a high wattage soldering iron to soften up the old lube by applying heat directly to the metal part only. Once disassembled use an anti-grease cleaner and relube with something like sewing machine oil and white lithium grease. Mine came up really well, even though I don't like the look of the deck, and I'll be using it as my primary deck for the foreseeable future.
hi worked on alot of tape deck from 1/4 to 2 find a tape that is not ill with you know what as i have find a lot need baking i find later zonal agfa are great to use in a service ampex tapes are hell allways filling my oven up with ampex tape not all bake well at 55c i have a otari mx 80 never need to bake any basf 2 inch tapes for it i can see why the tape is not playing right it's gripping to the heads i had this with my tascam 38 the ampex slow the play changed over to zonal tape right away runs ace now had to bake 200 ampex 1/2 inch tapes
TC 355 been in storage for 35 to 40 years. Put on new belts and lubed needed areas. It run if you lean it forward, but quits when I try to straighten it up. I am holding the "no tape" switch to make it run and it works well. Any ideas???
You missed the main problem that causes the binding, It is the large pivot on the right side of the mechanism. You will be lucky if you can get that off using a blowtorch to heat it. Acetone and ATF also works well but you willl have make a dam to hold the liquid a the pivot. TEACmachines have a similar problem,
hi there something called A BOND i used it in a job all the time i have a hot air mini blower it doe's not all ways work with the right tools i had to drill bolts out so many times as long as same looking ones go back in i had to used a front panel from a 80-8 to put on a teac 44 note i got the front from tascam ninja john i had to open a hole in the panel a file note the panel that was on the deck hit by heavy rust all over the panel
I have been working on my tc-355 so far i replaced belts and lubed it. I went to do a recording and i am not getting anything on the right channel on tape mode on source i do get sound on both channels. Can someone tell me what the problem might be? Thank you

I see it's now working!
You need the rubber stops to hold the reels on. Good effort on your part. Thanks for sharing.

Was gonna say they same thing about catching those filings. Doesn't take much for one to fall inside and short out something

Thank you very much. I appreciate the tip. I'd love to open it up and do it the right way. Thanks!

@@Ray-hd6vm The grease on these hardens so it needs to be removed and new grease added.

Exactly correct. I used, carefully, a heat gun to loosen the old factory grease. The spring that is already on the arm then pulls it nicely.
I have a Unit like this and it seems like they all have this same problem. I did get mine to work again thankfully
hi worked on alot of tape deck from 1/4 to 2 find a tape that is not ill with you know what
as i have find a lot need baking

The ADDED spring was never needed when the machine came from the factory. The grease removal and oiling needs to be re-visited.

The question does not make sense to me can you explain further?
The no tape switch is the automatic shutdown switch and it stops the machine when the tape runs out or if the tape breaks.

I have the correct tools and I still had to drill that bolt. They ut it on with Loctite that was permanent.

I guess nobody knows. Bummer.
