Silencing a Rigol DP832

  • The DP832 is a really nice instrument, but has a horrible, cheap and noisy fan. Replacing it seems easy enough, but don't repeat my mistake, because your power supply might otherwise also display "The fan stops, stop the output!" (yeah, really) and stop working. How you can avoid that is something I show in this video. The replacement fan I used was a Noctua NF-R8 (around 8 EUR and really really worth the money).

Hahaha "Maybe you too will now void your warranty on your DP832" LOL

Thanks for the video! Changed the fan on my unit and the bliss of working in silence is a godsend. Great to know that I needed to add the parallel resistor.

I followed these instructions using the same Noctua NF-R8 redux-1800 and 200 ohm resistor. After a while it complained about the fan. I added a 1 kohm resistor in parallel with the 200 ohm which has solved the problem so far. The noise difference is a relief.

FYI, I did the mod with a NF-A8 FLX, which replaces the model used in the video, and It works out of the box.
Maybe Rigol updated the threshold value since 2014, or the new model has slightly higher power consumption...

I can confirm that it does work with a Noctua NF-A8 with Low Noise Adapter (12V 45mA) without modifications.

I also replaced the fan. The original fan is very loud. Its the first thing I noticed about the power supply when turning it on. The new fan, I do not hear it at all.
I also replaced it with the Noctua NF-R8. But be sure to use the 1800rpm version. The 1200 rpm version has too little air displacement compared with the original fan. Its one of the best small hacks I ever did. I also used a 220Ohm/2W resistor.
And I got the taste of it (that's a Dutch saying, I think its hang of it in English) I'd like to do the same hack for my oscilloscope.
Also be aware of the fact that some versions of the DP832 seem to have two fans according to some people. One extra 40mm fan. You might want to replace that one to.

I fired up my DP832 last night for the first time. Wow! It's SO loud that it is almost enjoyable....kinda like a circular saw maybe. I thought a 747 was gearing up for takeoff down the street. I'll give this a try. Thanks!

    Nice hack. Very useful :)
I fell into a similar trap with a Lambda 600W power supply. The fan had red/yellow/black wires but instead of the yellow one being a speed indicator it is a alive/dead signal. So the PSU turned off after my hack. Had to make a little circuit to make it work.

My DP832 arrived today. And yes, it's still very loud with the original fan. Let's see if I will fuck up the warranty ;-) But thank you very much for the hack!

I wonder ... is there room to install two fans stacked together? If so then two quiet fans would tend to be quieter and the combined power consumption should be close to the 160mA factory one. Quiet is good so long as the airflow is adequate.

A nice psu but a very very crude way to check on the fan, a rpm wire should have been on the original to monitor the fan, shame on the manufacturers.
Hope your psu is still happy :-)

Hi Guys, i have a DP832A and i silenced it using a Noctua NF-R8 redux 1800 with a 390 Ohm/2 watt resistor. Works like a charm. Only the warranty coult be an issue.... Bud, it's really quiet! :)

    Interesting video! Thanks!
But did you actually make some calculations to verify that the Noctua NF-R8 "moves" enough air? In other words, is it really as good as the original (noisy) fan? How did you verify that?

    • @hobbified
      @hobbified 10 років тому

It moves 30% less air, but if you're using the DP832 at room temperature it's fine. The stock fan provides enough cooling to run the power supply up to the max specced temperature of 40C.

Может стоило просто поискать датчик тока в цепи вентилятора?

What is the brand of the screwdriver that you use in this video? Looks like a handy bit screwdriver.

Good to know, but not worth voiding the warranty for. The fan is not THAT loud to begin with.

RIGOL DP832 has 13-15 millivolts ch1 voltage display error? What about "you must pay 80Eur shipping" for in warranty item? RIGOL even grants official service for a local company that can only ship the thing to RIGOL Germany. Should I ask for donations to the official service center can get RIGOL 6.5 digit DMM to perform their tasks as service center?
Need I remind you the DP832 is same as SP832A version with 1mv declared accuracy. What RIGOL does not want you to know is that after you buy the software key for higher accuracy you must also ship the SP832 at your expense to fix this "flaw".
The numerous stores I asked to install demo key for high resolution to provide me proof that their SP832 boots and shows all zeros 0.000V failed to do so. They refused to provide such images claiming no demo keys are available. etc. etc.
Do not buy this RIGOL DP832 crap PSU, unless you have 6.5 digit DMM and can calibrate it.
