    So which is it MP3 VS WAV? I have a feeling the people using MP3’s to DJ want to know if they need to upgrade from MP3 to wavs and the people already using WAV’s most likely view MP3’s as dirty files - kind of like fast food that’s accessible everywhere. In this video find out what most DJs are using and what is the best option for you.

    I just get the WAVs then convert them to AIFF so I can tag them. I used to use FLAC files, but then you're out of luck if they don't have NXS2s. Some clubs only have an XDJ-RX2, and that works fine for everybody except the nerd who showed up with FLAC files on her thumb drives.
    There are a lot of ways MP3s can go bad once you start DJing with them. If you want to get something from UA-cam you should learn how to use youtube-dl and make your own files from the 160 kbps Opus source stream and never trust some shady downloader site grabbing who-knows-which stream and recompressing it with whatever settings they felt like.
    MP3's also have a high-frequency cutoff depending on their bitrate: 128 kbit = 16.5 KHz. 160 kbit = 17.2 KHz. 192 kbit = 18.7 KHz. 224 kbit = 19.4 KHz. 320 kbit = 20.1 KHz.
    If you look at the spectrum you can see a line where the encoder killed the high frequencies and you can tell which bitrate it was encoded at.
    Most adults can't hear much over 17 KHz, but what happens if you slow down the BPM by 5%? That changes 18 KHz to 17 KHz. The more pitch-shifting and EQ-ing you do the more you'll bring out problems with compressed audio. Eventually you'll start to notice your hi-hats are all wooshy and everything sounds terrible.
    Encoders also do psychoacoustic modeling which throws away some information. You don't notice when you play the track normally, but ... when you EQ a track or run it through FX you might be amplifying part with lost information and you'll uncover compression artifacts.

      @@ICTman Tell me about it! Most of my library is CBR320 and FLAC. Obviously the mp3s will work with iTunes for building smart playlists, but not FLACs. No way can I re d/l my bandcamp library in another format and retag everything (though I've switched to m4a for all new d/l's).
      Pisses me off that Apple won't integrate FLAC, just to keep their less used and more restrictive ALAC format alive.
      Looks like beaTunes might be an alternative audio librarian, but it doesn't quite have the smart playlist functionality I'm after. Does work well with Traktor though.

      @@sapiotone Apple's business isn't tech, it's services. As soon as you buy an Apple product, you force yourself into using Apple's services, for better or, more often, for worse. Apple's a lost cause, but it's a shame that other developers just can't be bothered - it would take maybe one dev a day or two to get a satisfactory implementation, and maybe at most a week to get a full blown implementation. Apart from labour, there is no cost to supporting FLAC, so why it isn't a more common thing I don't know.

      Precisely what I was saying about high freq listeners and harmonics. I used .flac at some point. Fully agree on what you said from the technical point of view. But after dealing for an year or two with those formats I turned to .mp3 320 for practical uses, taking all precautions as you stated. The high freq cut off is noticeable but I tent not to fx that much so never though about it... I guess I am too old school... or just too old :) probably...I can notice the richness of the sound (more harmonics in the digitising process) but with a good mp3 carefully coded in my experience, the sound is fine for 99,99% of the dance floor. Then again, not a big fx user honestly. I do also always use a post mixer equaliser that helps to correct small differences from song to song and perhaps also compensate somewhat for loss of fidelity. As a rule of thumb, or rule of ears, if the file doesn't sound good in my headphones under controlled conditions, cannot go to the crate and need some further processing. But honestly, with proven sorces, that seldom happens.
      Good point you mentioned, will start messing with the FX and see what happens.

    The last time I used a dj pool I didn't really like the music they had to offer. I'd try searching a specific song and couldn't find it. If there were a larger selection to choose from, I'd give it another try. Otherwise, I'll stick to converting my tracks until I start playing on bigger sound systems. If you're playing a house party or anything with a small PA system, chances are nobody will notice. That way, I can build my sets the way I want with the tracks I want. So if you're a bedroom dj, or you play smaller partys, don't worry about it so much. Once you feel like you're getting closer to play at bigger events, switch over to dj pools or pay for single songs online.

      @@Pedro7526from: wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=High-frequency_content_in_MP3s
      - quote starts - Why MP3s omit high-frequency content
      ;
      MP3 encoders typically "lowpass" their input, cutting off the highest frequencies. There are several reasons for this:
      Human hearing tends to drop off sharply somewhere between 16 and 20 KHz, usually toward the low end of that range.
      The input to the encoder is unlikely to have much, if any, audible, musical (non-noise-like) high-frequency content.
      Even if the source does have audible musical content above 16 KHz, preserving it would take away valuable space that could be used by the lower, more important frequency bands.
      The MP3 format has difficulty storing content above 16 KHz without sacrificing quality and increasing the bitrate requirements of the lower frequency bands. - end quote.
      Now the file can also be re-encoded from lower bitrates souces or kept with some encoded restriction even at 320kbps sampling rate to keep the size reasonable for whatever reason... it is important to note that frequency content and encoding algorithms will affect the result file in size, quality, etc, especially if some parameters when sampling and encoding are not allowed to variate if required. If you are really interested in the subject there is a lot of information in the internet addressing all the aspects from sampling, information theory, codding, codecs, etc. not to mention some good points in all the comments here :)
      Now at the end of the day, it is all about perception (which is not the same from one person to another!) and that is what mp3 and other "lossy" formats plays with. In contrast, the "lossless" formats like wav, flac, etc keep more information even when is not perceived by most.
      Now you have to determine if working with one or another is worth it or not, which I presume is the scope of this useful and down to earth video approach without getting too technical and/or boring.

    I always try to get the WAV file, I notice a huge difference in the quality if you compare WAV and 356 it’s no question about its a large quality drop to 356. It still works for sure but you definitely lose some of the richness and depth of the song using a mp3. I am planning on playing in some big clubs one day and my library is super important to me so if I have the chance to have the absolute best quality music I will. Your library is a life long project so the space it takes doesn’t really matter that much because you will never stop evolving you music. So having a high standard music library is something I value because as a dj you spend a crazy amount of time organizing your music.

    The difference is very clear when you have good speakers/monitors, & good hearing. Huge difference between 320 & anything less. It's like playing an old school cassette tape. I also noticed how Serato miscalculated the BPM on my lower quality DnB MP3 's. All of them are tagged at like 80 or, 90 BPM. I thought at first that Serato DJ Pro was just looking at the slower intro or, breakdowns until I noticed that it was everything D&B that I transferred over from CD's decades ago.
    Now I have to get them all over again. If I can. Most were mixes. BPM Supreme is OK for average music but, not when you know exactly what underground tracks you want. It was extremely difficult to even just find any anthems or, older underground tracks. VIP's/Dubplates. Etc.

    I’m a dj in my local psytrance scene where we bring festival grade speakers out bush. I’ve found that even 320kbps doesn’t cut it in terms of quality cause every single imperfection is amplified in these systems. Also there is a massive drop in volume and I’m having to increase the gain on the 320 track every time and bring it back down when I’ve loaded a wav back into the channel. Sure, the punters don’t know the difference but half the people that go to these events are audio engineers or djs themselves who all have an ear for it. Stick with aiff or wav as they’re both uncompressed or flac if you need to as it’s a lossless compression. If you have a big enough library where you’re worried about space, you’re at a point where spending $100 on a good external hard drive is more than worth it.

We were running a sound system at the time, and, to the sound technicians, the word mp3 was blasphemy. When I started up DJing again recently, I messaged an old mate who's now really successful at producing and djing for an opinion, since .wavs seemed hard so to get.. She plays sets through 50+k of pro audio set ups on the regular. When it comes to her own style, and what she produces, she said she plays .wavs. But when she's mixing other genres, as she often does, she plays mp3, and no one notices the differences. 10 Years ago she'd have been the first person to turn her nose up at mp3s, and now she reckons that the only ppl that really care are audiophiles that tweak amps, mixing boards, and crossovers. Thanks for your content, man, your enthusiasm is infectious, and I enjoy your uninhibited stream of consciousness rants haha. Big up!

    I use 320kb MP3 files. I do have some tracks in WAV but its only a small amount. But its not just the file, its also the kit you are using. Ive played using CDJ's and to me the sound was rather cheap, but when using my Denon MC7000 in a club it sounded freaking awesome. The 32bit DAC seems to make a big difference in sound quality compared to the 16bit DAC in some pioneer kit.

    Most importantly,. New dj's should be using programs like "Spek" spectrum software to analize their mp3's. Any files that show cuts under the 20khz/16khz mark should not be played nor are they worth paying for. From my own experience I have found out that even some of the mp3's i bought from Beatport back in the days were worse quality compressions then the same tracks downloaded through YT for comparisson at 320kbps. My personal opinion is that, there are websites out there that offer very well made mp3's even with all the metadata properly done so it all show nicely in Rekordbox, where you for the same price mind you also can buy the Waves presupposed you have the space for it. Furthermore, if you are playing on systems that can actually deliver the full range of the sound spectrum then people will truly "feel" the sets you are playing, the music become more alive and powerful.

  • @alistairbrown1846

    If you have a premium Tidal account you can compare the difference (approximately) by streaming a few tracks into Rekordbox - it has the option of normal (320K AAC) and CD quality (1440K FLAC). The CD quality option means tracks take a little longer to load into Rekordbox, but really only a few seconds longer, which I don't find to be a big problem. I must admit I haven't really done a back to back comparison in Rekordbox to see if I can tell the difference, although I can tell the difference when streaming from the Tidal app to my hi-fi over Airplay.
    I haven't bought any tracks yet but I'm starting to build up a wish-list of tracks that aren't available in Tidal, so I do need to decide whether to go with MP3 or WAV - and this video has helped a bit (leaning towards MP3 now). One thing I do wonder is, even if the quality of a 320k MP3 is good enough for normal listening, does it stay good enough if you're slowing the track down substantially (like, more than say -5%) and using FX? I just imagine having richer source material will give the software/player/mixer more 1's and 0's to work with when you're asking them do more than just play a song at its original speed.
    On a more general note, thanks for the videos. As a relative beginner to DJing (new lockdown hobby!) I really appreciate the advice and inspiration that I get from this channel!

    Funny you said wav as "original" information. Long time ago we used to say that vinyl had the "original" information :)... I think that the problem resides in the amount of harmonics that are actually sampled and coded as a digital format. The higher the sampling rate, the more significant harmonics in the file. A very very well trained ear can detect the difference between certain vinyls and their counterparts in CD (wav) or mp3s... just because such ear can detect more harmonics than the normal guy... they are usually able to hear the bats sounds or the old power source converters high freq pitch very easily. So, there are not that many humans that can do that. Having said that, I do agree 200% with you... mp3 320 is perfect for most uses. And what you mention on the size taken by the file is spot on... duration and size are related (not directly) but is a good indication of sample bitrate.
    Great video and very down to earth information! excellent as usual! BTW, I used vinyls, wavs and now, off course, mp3 320... I cannot believe the weight we used to carry on our (multiple) crates :D

    • @ollywinters
      @ollywinters 3 роки тому

      The vinyl is pressed from the original digital file, you're not losing information. If it sounds better than the original its because it's because it's been mastered

    • @guillermopelaez5859
      @guillermopelaez5859 3 роки тому

      @@ollywinters Yes... Original digital file nowadays. It used to be analogue... Anyway, the original digital file is way up sampled than an mp3 or even a wav (and including more harmonics plus remastered). Off course I do agree with you, current production, specially within the dance realm, it is done in a fully digital format exported to a wav or other lossless formats.
      So what it used to be the "original master" fully analogue, now is the "original file", fully digital, and way better than any mp3, regardless the bitrate, harmonically speaking.

I guess most ordinary punters couldn't tell the difference though. Had to edit this comment after going back and listening, the bass on the tracks from the sites mentioned seemed overdriven. OGGs can get comparable quality at slightly lower bit rates in my experience, and FLACs are a bit smaller than WAVs. I always aim for the highest possible quality since there's no point having a lower quality if you can get higher quality just as easily.

      Well, compression (lossy for small size, not gain compression as in a plugin in your DAW) can act like a sight bit of saturation or distortion in some circumstances, which can make things actually sounds "better." So, it's not impossible that you coincidentally listened to a few songs that were made to sound better by the encoding....

    The quality of the music is not always determined by the kbps. You can get 320 MP3 and WAV files that are crap, I experience this with older tracks when I buy them on DJ pools, Beatport, etc. They need to have some type of disclosure stating what source they are getting these older tracks from, studio quality, copy or kbps rate of original file. Its a waste of time to download a track labeled 320 or WAV only to have it sound distorted and hissy. From a DJing perspective - Newer tracks: you cannot really tell the difference as today's music is pretty good audio quality. From a Producer's perspective - Newer music and pretty much every type of music, you may notice subtle differences and so, you should definitely always go with WAV files.

But, if you're using a controller, no matter how good it is (I use an Traktor S8 which is 24 bit, but still doesn't sound as good as a DJM), you should try and use lossless files as none compare with the sound card quality/processing quality of a Pioneer DJM (even if you're routing through one). That's odd ... I have never had Metadata disappear on my flac files.... could it be that they are corrupted flacs, or, actually wav files that someone changed the file extention to flac 😮😮😮???

      Which dj software / audio player do u use to tag ur flac audio?.
      I use virtual dj pro, and as for my audio player is use AIMP3. Its pretty straightforward.. never had this issue 😮😮😮
