Vauxhall Vectra Wiper Linkage Failure

  • This is how to fix the problem with Vauxhall Vectra's passenger side wiper arm failure. My veh is a 2004 model & this fault is apparently quite common. It takes about 5 mins to fix & costs under £2 & will probably last longer than a new linkage assembly (for which, a dealer will charge around £200) I used a piece of elasticated string / rope which I got from a DIY shop for £1.50. Save yourself a few bob & do it yourself!

Brilliant. Mine just popped off. Of course it was raining and windy. I didn't have any bungee cord, but some strong elastic works the same. The wife's knickers keep falling down, so it's a double bonus.

This is a brilliant fix😀. As the video said, it took longer to go and buy the bungee cord than tie it up. Was dreading a multi-hundred pound bill before the fix. This isn’t a plug but I got some 8mm bungee cord from B&Q for less than a fiver. Worked really well

Good man for posting this video. The passenger wiper did this very thing a couple of years ago. Initially i just span the rod around and changed ends, this worked fine for 2 years, now its gone again. Im off to the shop now to go get me some elastic!!!! Cheers

You've just saved me a chunk of money! It cost me the elastic out of an old coat and 5 mins. I owe you a pint 👍
    Thanks pal
Note to anyone doing this: Move the wiper blades slightly if the points don't match up.

Thank you, you are a legend - I'm a practicle fella and embarrassed to have not thought of bungie cords.

I used 3 strong cable ties to hold the linkage together. Works fine.
I tried a 35mm jubilee clip. You have to de-connect it first by completely undoing it, then wrap it round the two arms as with the elastic string. Only issue was, on my own, I couldn't re-join and tighten the jubilee clip, due to the linted and very tight space available for your hand, but I reckon a second pair of hands on the job holding the screwdriver could achieve it and give a more permanent fix than the cable ties, although these are pretty secure.
This is the second time jkrmcguire has bailed me out of a tricky situation with his Vectra tips. Thanks a lot.

Brilliant! Worked perfect for us on a '99 Frontera.. We also tried a cable tie first (as with comments below), but obviously it didn't work due to no flex, so I cut a long thin strip of old bicycle inner tube and tied it in the appropriate place. Windscreen wipers now work every time! Thanks for the inspiration jkmcguire!

I fixed mine temporary using thick elastic band and a tie-rap. Luckily it was under warranty and they fixed it when it was in for it's next service.

Nice one!!!! This happened to me this morning.. I'd previously changed the motor on the wipers (also a known fault) so I was straight to the linkage and found the bottom push rod falling off the cup it sits on ! was looking at a new linkage but much prefer your solution! cheers!!

Thank you so much. Fixed it today. Seems so simple that it's almost too good to be true - let's hope it's durable but based upon other feedback on here, I see no reason why not. I removed the windscreen wiper arms simply to get better access. Isn't the web superb for the 'little guy' - saved me £££ which would have otherwise gone to the dealer!

First time this happened, I tried to fix with a cable tie. However, I wonder if the linkeage rods do not move in parallel, as the cable tie snapped. Resorted to a salvaged linkeage set from scrap yard - about £40 I think it was. However, this one has now gone. Will now use the bungee cord method...

This happened to me but it was the top rod that had popped off not the bottom, after watching your vid I put it back on and tied it with some rubber and it was working perfectly but in heavy rain the next day it failed again and now both rods have come off at the other end so neither wiper is working.....if I put all back on and tie again do you think that will work or do I just need to bring it to a garage?? Thanks

    I've tried:
Cable ties - They cut and failed
Shoe lace - It cut and failed
Jubilee clip - It snapped in half and failed
Metal wire - It cut and failed
I'm running out of things to try, maybe it's a sign that I should just book it in for a repair.

This fix will give up on you and it will be when you least expect it. You can buy proper repair kits for this type of issue. Why bodge it and risk it failing. These plastic joints deteriorate quickly.
Who puts a thumbs up to this shite. Imagine if your wipers failed due to this bodge and a horrendous accident occurred. Sigh
