    I am getting ready to build this kit and came across your review, which I found very helpful. I can only hope my finished model looks as good as yours. BTW: The painting of your figure look really good, nice job. I did see that Scotish roughness you were talking about. :-)

      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +Ogamitto1 Thank you! The good thing about Japanese aircraft is that it's quite easy to use a compass cutter on kabuki tape to make a mask for the hinomaru markings, but that still leaves the lettering and stencils to the decal sheet.

    The pilot MAY just throw off the harness, but, since that harness may save his life on the next sortie, he's more likely going to be more careful. And even if the pilot isn't careful, his crew chief will be in the cockpit rearranging the harness as soon as the pilot is out of the seat.

    Great little video, Gary. I'm slowly building up my skills to take on this beauty of a kit (bought it a few months ago), and this was very concise and informative. I haven't even taken off the shrink wrap off the box yet, so the parts and instruction book review you gave sated my lust to open the box. I didn't realize just how great this kit is. About the decals.....my kit was manufactured in 2019, do you know or think Tamiya has addressed and made corrections to the problems you described since you published this? Do I need to start shopping for after market decals? One other note. Your work area is far too tidy. LOL.

  • @HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling
    @HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling 8 років тому +1

    it is not as huge as i thought it would be. excellent work there gary, love it :) that pilot entering the plane is a nice touch, you did indeed a good job on the figure. nice to see panzer putty deployed there. never tried it myself but heard good things about it. especially for soviet tanks with the reactive armor tiles on it this stuff must be very handy to mask off the tank for the camouflage.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +Hamilkar Barkas If there's one thing I noticed with the PP, even though it's recommended for soft-edge camo, was that you have to be quick with it as it tends to flatten really quickly so when you spray you get a sharp line. It's quite amazing stuff - almost like it's alive!

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +ChancerNW I tend to go from one to the other. That Tanmodel Thunderflash is taking a bit of... 'tweaking' to get it to a presentable stage, so it's nice to have that balance.

  • @rebelsatcloudnine
    @rebelsatcloudnine 8 років тому

    I've got to say I completely agree with you. There's a part of my brain that says "ALL RIGHT! a new Tamiya 32nd kit" And the other part says,"You know you're going to have to decal the darn thing"..... I even brought out Walthers Solvaset, which has the tendency to ruin the paint when it's applied. And even that doesn't quite do the trick.
    This one is still on my "to buy" list, really fun seeing it built and in action, is the landing gear removable?

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому +1

      +rebelsatcloudnine Yeah, I was using Daco's red stuff - the really powerful one - and in several applications, but to no avail. Lesson learned!
      Alas, like the Corsair, the wheels are permanent fixtures and seeing how they are attached, I see that it would have been nigh on impossible to have them removable.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому +1

      +peezebeuponyou It was a bit odd. Unlike blu-tac, it's self-levelling, meaning it will start to lay flat (on the horizontal surfaces) meaning you'll lose any feathered edge effect. It's a bit like flubber!

    How did you achieve that interior green? I've heard that it's a mix of particular tamiya paints that I can't remember right now, but when I've tried the recommended mix it doesn't appear as intense a green as that, it's darker, or is that the lighting?

    Hello Sir,
    I really enjoyed your video on the 1/32 scale of the De Havilland Moskito. Do you think in the very near future you could do a detailed step-by-step building of your stash with narration and please no timelapse photography?
    The reason for the request is because I'm a beginner and the only way I can understand how the kit comes to life is to have the project in narration so I can hear what was said in the building of the kit.

    Gary, Just make sure you're not standing in front of a window while you show off your "harness." The tyre assembly process and completion is remarkable. The poor little plastic man looks pissed! HA! Maybe because I called him plastic. The "Mossie" looks beautiful inside and out, beautiful pit, bombay, Merlins,paint and weathering. OH, THE DECALS, YES what a shame, never use them myself. Not 1 of my 30 Tamiya 1/48th Thunderbolts have stock decals. They always piss me off. ANYWHO! Great built the "Mossie" is a Beauty! - Bob

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +bob dyer Cheers, Bob! I'm sure it must have filtered back to Tamiya (and the other Japanese manufacturers) about their decals and with such an important aspect of a kit as well! That Panzer Putty looks intriguing stuff (whits the benefit of the Black Flubber?). Great wee build Gary and good to see you venturing into new territory with the figure painting (It is your first time yes?) - As a fellow Scot I agree about his ruggedness, aye it‘s in the genes right-enough and is now available in plastic too! Cheerio.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +Malcolm Hood Well, I've yet to reap the benefits of the panzer Putty. You use it in place of blu tac but it's a very unusual substance - always trying to find its own level and if you're not fast enough, it will flatten out and the nice, soft edge camo you were looking for will be a crisp a line as if you had used tape. I need more practice with the stuff as I ended up doing the Mossie's soft edge free hand!

    Great job again Gary, and this one reminded me about this - I think this model conversion has your name all over it! It is for the B-17 gunship, the YB-40. The conversion is a bit of a challenge, but nothing you have not already mastered. Check out this Swanny Models build if you haven't seen it - I think we should put the hat around for you to help fund it! www.swannysmodels.com/YB40.html

    • @MakingModelsAgain

      +Dan_from_Epsilon_Crucis Now that's funny you should have mentioned this as I've always fancied making the gunship B-17 and if I'm remembering correctly, I researched it one time and found a conversion set for it, but for the life of me, I can't remember if it was 1/72 or 1/48 (which I'd prefer). I'm surprised there isn't a proper kit of this machine!

      +MakingModelsAgain He had to use a 1/48 Revell B-17F kit for the conversion to work.. He did a great job on the interior.

    I see NO reason to have a PE panel in any of Tamiyas 1/32nds. The kit-supplied panels looks fantastic and the mosquito is no exception. Another great video; thank you!

    Hi Gary! beautiful kit indeed. What's the damage to the wallet? Think I will give that Panzer putty a whirl.That's always been on my mind too.Why Tamiya do such great kits and then have crap decals.Great video mate.Keep um coming ;)

      +Warren Blanch Well, aside from having to pay HMRC a fee to get it into the country, I was fortunate to have the kit supplied by KitMaker gratis. I think it typically retails around the £130 mark plus or minus.

    Thanks for the build review. I agree with you regarding the quality of Tamiya decals vs. Tamiya plastic. I hope that they can remedy that issue in the future.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому

      +Roger Hull It seems to be any Japanese manufacturer, which is even more contradictory. The decals for the 1/144 Millennium Falcon are they same with heavy carrier film surrounding them and this is on one of the most exquisitely detailed kits I've ever seen!

    A very fine model, well done indeed. But I note you have dropped the inboard flaps. This is something you very very rarely see on any Mossie on the ground. You are correct though in the positioning of the elevators. One thing that has always intrigued me since reading an article in an Airfix mag back in the 70s? if I recall is the issue of scale colour on models. The smaller the scale the lighter the colour. The other issue is the 'scale' of the painted feathered borders between two colours, case in point is the division of the two camo colours on your completed Mossie kit, they over scale, even at 1/32. Look at any Mossie in these colours and the fineness of the border is a lot tighter - how does one get around that at various scales, to give the correct impression. Nevertheless a very fine model once again. Best regards

      Often models are depicted with things positioned simply because they can be - that the manufacturer has provided that option. Technical accuracy often makes way for artistic license. :)

    Why is this model so expensive? Revells 1/32 He 219 was $67 CDN.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  6 років тому

      simon ******* basically it comes down to the investiture in the kit. Revell represent excellent value for money but the kits might rewuire a bit of work here and there in terms of fit - nothing wrong with that, but the effort that Tamiya put into their kits is on another level entitely. Their precision engineered toolings produce kits that fit with no discernable issues.

      MakingModelsAgain OK...
      I see. Japanese auto manufacturing essentially. From what I hear, Chinese spies try very hard to get inside the secret facilities where Japanese cars are built to steal the production methods. Anyway...the 219 turned out very well. I was amazed at how much better Revell makes kits from say the 80's when I was a kid. Much better these days. Very good kit.

    Great job! I am in the process of painting this beast(ie) currently. I will admit I have been somewhat intimidated by the thought of painting and decaling this thing. Ours is a hobby where we can still screw things up at the last minute! I did buy aftermarket decals.... Thanks for your review!

    I once saw a Japanese modelling show where they try to get around thick decals by actually sanding (with ultra fine sandpaper) a matt or gloss coat to have the decal line up with the coat. I will try to find the episode.

    Looks like a great model, but probably a few too many parts for me. I like my kits to be a little easier to construct, but I can see that there is a lot of fantastic detail and quality in this kit.
    Good job on the build and I actually thought the same as you, that figure does have the look of a Scotsman about him..... Rosy cheeks perhaps??? Slight scowl maybe???? Either way, I am part Scottish on my mother's side and there is a definite North of the Border look about him. Great job mate.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 років тому +1

      +jjab99 I think it's because he sort of reminds me of my old boss - sort of humourless square-jawed expression that remained the same regardless of what we was experiencing. True Scot. ;)

    But... it's so wet in the Scotland that I've heard even wood rusts (as does plastic, cotton, velcro, idle children, alumuniiunuuiimum, etc.,)... so where's the rust?
    :D jk! Seriously dude, awesome work as always. This makes me want to grab one of these kits right away.
    Btw, in future videos, would you consider showing more images of the model from different angles while you chat? A simple voice over during these parts would work nicely, since I'm still interested in what you're saying, but still allow an opp to see the plane up close a wee bit more...?? Again, brilliant work.
    ~Cheers

    Irony being that if you buy a set of Tamiya detail decals for their 1/35 figures (you know, rank insignia, unit markings etc) that those are printed by Cartograph..

      Now you've got me wanting waffles! I was going to go for a nice leafy salad, seeing as how it's a beautiful day today and the sun is shining and I was sitting out in it getting all sunned and stuff and I kept thinking about what I was going to have to eat later, you know, for my evening meal as I was starting to feel quite peckish since I had skipped lunch on account of having a slightly larger than usual breakfast of almond butter on toast topped with a banana and further topped with some Tropical Forest Blossom Honey. I had two slices of this, so it has kept me feeling satisfied for most of the day, but as I was saying, I was considering a nice, light and healthy leafy salad, but now you've gone and got me wanting the less-healthier option of waffles. Right, I'm off to try and solve this quandary I find myself in. I'll let you know how I got on and what culinary decision I eventually came to.
