Sad the museum closed down a couple months ago. But I hear they have the funds for a rail trail from Sandgate to Richmond Vale

In fact this is very much the same as parts of northern China coal mines today.

You can find 7 SMR 10 class, 2 ROD's, and SMR N° 14 at dorrigo making them the largest collection of ex South Maitland Railways steam locos in the world 10 in total, If it wasnt for Chris Ritchards, the Richmond Vale Railwy Museum and of course the Dorrigo Steam Raliway and Museum most of the history of the South Maitland Railways steam operation would only be black and white photos in some really expensive railway book.

    Wow, what great memories.
I remember watching this at the time. Never thought to tape it.

At Hexham there is now a gigantic locomotive workshop where at anytime there are a dozen 4000hp diesel loco's waiting for their scheduled service work. They use 28,000 liters of engine oil every 2 weeks. Richmond Vale colliery site itself now has an excellent working museum of very cool, old skool steam trains and rolling stock.

Fondly remember sitting by the track counting the number of wagons in the early 1960`s near Pelaw Main.

Thank you, I’ve tried to track this a few times. Was obsessed with it and had it taped when I was about 5.

Imagine if that coal crisis never happened, we'd probably still have steam in commercial operation

LADY, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!. The 10 class locomotives did not work the Richmond Vale Railway throughout its history. Four were borrowed from the South Maitland Railway in the last few years of operation because the RODs needed new boilers.

Although she is just reading a script, very well too, that someone else wrote. All mistakes are the scriptwriters.

@@johnd8892 Anna Manzoni was the *WORST POSSIBLE* choice to record the narration for this NBN-produced documentary. They should've given the job to Jim Sullivan. Anna Manzoni was a staff newsreader(and not a good one either) who did the weekend bulletins. She was a snooty would-be aristocratic type who thought she was *someone special* because she was on TV. Listen to the pretentious way she says "railway" as *rahlway.*

@@top40researcher31 We're talking Anna Manzoni, she did not read for any other station other than NBN-Newcastle as she was already gone from NBN by the time Bob Hawke's massively stupid *brain fart* of regional TV market aggregation was rolled out. As for wearing wigs, that was her own hair. You could not have seen Manzoni as you did not, and do not live in the Newcastle/Hunter Region, as I said, she was already gone from NBN well before 1990.
