I’m 67 and a marathon runner and remember watching this fantastic moment, but it just occurred to me after all these years that the marathon is the only Olympic event where you get to make a grand entrance into the stadium!
Barely five feet tall. Weighed 100 pounds if she just ate breakfast. Had major knee surgery two weeks before trials. Maybe best you tube video ever. Should be required watching for any athlete.
I remember us watching this on tv when I was 13 years old. We were still out of school for summer, but I am pretty sure it was weekend day as the whole family was eating together. I think it was breakfast. We had a tiny little tv that my dad had moved into the kitchen and set on the end of the counter/desk for the Olympics that year. The whole family...all seven of us..lingered a little longer at the table to watch this race and the conclusion. Great Olympic moment from my childhood.
I was there! Joan was awesome but the person who made the headlines was Gabriela Andersen-Schiess of Switzerland who staggered around the last lap looking as if she might collapse and die. She placed 37th as it was important to just finish. On her final lap that might have lasted 15 mins they attempted to help but she brushed them off and finished on her own. Her picture made it to Sports Illustrated and all the major publications.
she mustve had the biggest runners high ever, to come into a stadium with thousands of people cheering for you while you have one lap to go and nobody is even close to you. freaking awesome
I was 11 years old, sitting right below the Olympic Torch at this race. You have no idea how loud The Coliseum roared when she came out of the tunnel. It was epic.
I saw this televised live in 1984. Great moment is women's and US running. I wasnt thinking back then about how incredible a 3rd best marathon time was considering a summer marathon in LA. But back then the women' didnt compete in the marathon distance equally by gender as they do now.
If memory serves me correct (I was only 16 at the time) no one had heard of her and wasn't even supposed to win. Some other American was favored. Joan Benoit came out of nowhere and won
It's called television for a reason...the announcers should have stayed silent from the time Benoit entered the stadium until she crossed the finish line...the moment and accomplishment spoke for themselves
Winning the Olympic marathon in your home country and entering the stadium alone, is probably the greatest thing one can do in sport.

I'd never seen this before and it brought tears to my eyes!!! Awesome
Watched this live early hours of the morning in New Zealand cheering on the Kiwis but Joan stole my heart what an inspiration
She was my gym teacher in middle school. I got kicked out of class for smiling :) Tough as nails!!!
The roar of the crowd when Joan enters the stadium......
Into the Coliseum and into immortality
This video gives me chills every time
That's what I call BAD ASS!!! Being over 1 minute ahead of everyone else and entering that stadium alone

It was the biggest fuck you ever to those who said women can't run the marathon 😁
@@Arctica88 Spot on, mate. That was the "you were saing?" moment of all moments.

Watching this, remembering this, is as good as a UA-cam video gets for me.
Greta Waitz is resting in peace. She was amazing.
Yes, may she rest in peace.
Joan Benoit...THE BEST!!!
I wanna believe that this was when the last event was the marathon like it ALWAYS should be

I just got a high watching.
Dang, Joan dominated that marathon 💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

She was and is amazing! Joan!!! 💗

Joan Benoit came out of nowhere and won
No, sorry, that's not correct. Everyone had heard of Joan. She was a Boston Marathon champion and one of the favorites in this race.
it looks like they held this race during the heat of the day in Los Angeles...that must have been brutal.
Fortunately not an awful day. Ran in the morning. Finish temp was under 80. Hot, but not 2019 World Championships hot😂
Doesn't get much better than that!
Awesome 👍
Wow, wow,wow....
I am in awe !
You left out Gabriela Andersen-Scheiss, which was _the_ finish to remember.
I see what you are saying but these are the two extremes of the day. "Thrill of victory, the agony of defeat".
I ski with Jane in Maine about once a year. Shes the most active person i know to this day.
I doubt it. If you ski with her, you'd know here name was Joan, not Jane.
this makes my eyes sweat
I'm reading'Running with the Kenyans' and Jean's name is mentioned, Legend 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Was Joan also mentioned???
2:54 one guy jumped over the fence! Strumbled and seemly injured his left leg!
Good catch!
Thanks for noticing that.

Joan won Boston...This is No Surprise 😮
Hello! Can WGN-TV, Tribune Media group & their distribution partners use this video on all platforms in perpetuity? Thanks!

Она была обута в Nike DBreak
Nowadays they all run in their underwear I think because it makes you faster
