Sorry that you've had issues with trolls. Hard to imagine anyone has issues with either of you. You're lovely, openminded, intelligent people.
I was a soldier, actually serving in NI at the start of the most recent troubles in 1969. Our initial brief was to be a buffer between the loyalists and the republicans. The situation soon deteriorated with republican groups targeting soldiers.
The Catholics were discriminated against by the Protestant majority, even voting rights were not fair and equal. Trust me, we did not want to be on the streets carrying weapons in a part of the U.K. Politically it was totally mismanaged, each side thought they were being discriminated against as there was no middle ground, I spent over two years of my life being abused, spat at, had rocks and petrol bombs thrown at us and soon shot were aimed at us by dissident republican groups. I was never happier than the day I was posted to Germany in early 72.

WOW, Derek that must have been so difficult. I do feel like this video glossed over the fact that the Irish Catholics had lots of rights taken away from them. That fact is very important when trying to understand the "Troubles " I think.

My mother was born in 1912 in Derry and died in the late 2000s. Although she lived through much of the conflict, she was so happy to finally see peace in her lifetime🙏. I think your reaction was very respectful, Thank you 🙏

i'm 66. all my life, i've heard that the violence in N. Ireland was all about religion. IMHO, it was all about an indigenous, native population being suppressed and discriminated by an immigrant population [regardless of the actions of Britain] i believe that if the Catholics had been black and the immigrant Protestants had been white, the recent history of the island would have been very different, as the attitude of the world, to what was going on there, would have been very different. the separation and segregation of the 2 communities would have been called apartheid, for example. a lot of the animosity, amongst Catholics, was caused by Protestants marching through mainly Catholic areas, in celebration of battles won. i find that disgusting. imagine if people from the north of the US still marched through towns in the south, to celebrate battles won there; and that was a long time ago. i imagine that there are people in N. Ireland, still alive, who's grandparents, or even the parents of the oldest, still living, were around during such battles, even as children. their defence is that it's their culture. if the division had been between black and white, those who took part in such marches, would be condemned throughout the world, and no excuse tolerated.
The modern "Troubles " were not so much a rligious thing once you looked at it, the Provisional Irish Republican movement was following a marxist idology but found that if it operated under the flag of conveniance of beig catholic
You’re so right.. being from the north of Ireland. Catholics were treated like absolute dirt, my family included. The normal Protestants were fine… it’s the loyalists who were vile evil beings. The loyalist serial killer group that killed many of my family members.
We were always last to be considered, recently Belfast in particular is changing and the Republican community are rising and over taking,

I don't understand what people get out of hurting people just because you disagree with things. I must adit I may find this a hard one to watch as my brother was shot in Northern Ireland but will listen anyway.
People are free to say what they want. It's called free speech, don't get it twisted. But I get what you trying to say.
I think that the key to public discussion of the British involvement in Ireland without incurring angry reactions is to avoid apportionment of blame and just stick to accepted facts. Natasha, Debbie and the makers of the video have done a good job of this (in my opinion) and are allowing viewers to form their own opinion. I'm saddened that the ladies have been subjected to offensive, ignorant comments by cowards who spread their hatred and bitterness from behind their keyboards.

One of the most difficult trials is to look at any violent historical event in any country with out taking a side. I enjoy how open Natasha and Debbie are in sharing with viewers their watching of these many UA-cam videos as a learning tool. I agree with you @Marc Harley this wonderful American Couple do encourage each of us to form our own opinions .
I do hope that those who find entertainment in accusing others will one day see how the senseless negativity towards others only hurts themselves. They whom take pride in their cowardly attacks and think they are all the better for it , I find to be more often than not burried in hate and anger. The pain they must feel and be trapped in might bring sorrow if they were not trying so hard to share the cowardly hate to anyone they can...
The biggest fact is that IRELAND is not in the UK and they keep including Rep of Ireland when that talk about UK....it offends us greatly

As a child during the troubles, my dad was in the Irish Army, he'd been all over the world with UN on Peacekeeping duties, would leave to patrol the border in the North. Im 65 now and I still remember the terror of wondering if he'd ever come home again.

Those negative comments are likely because of the subject matter of the video, and not about people being negative about you learning. It's like if you were to (and i know this is an awful comparison, Irish folks, forgive me) react to a video on Brexit, it would cause chaos in the comments and people would be going insane.
(I'm not comparing The Troubles to something as dogshit dumb as Brexit, either. Just purely lack of better words to try and give an example)

Great channel ladies, I just want to say that trolls simply hate to see anyone do well and anyone happy because trolls are themselves are just miserable losers. I have seen many of the best and most successful UA-camrs attacked by trolls. But see it this way, if trolls are attacking you, it just means that you are doing well with a great channel with great content. Keep up the good work and keep learning.

Massive respect to you, ladies, for tackling this fraught subject. We don't learn by looking away. Prejudice thrives on ignorance, and it needs to be challenged with love and tolerance - as, indeed, you did in your introductory comments.
To address your surprise about the Great Famine not featuring more heavily: from a British point of view, all of the historical grievances raised in the video were glossed over equally. From an American perspective, I suspect the Famine features predominantly in your studies because it feeds directly into your nation's history via the mass Irish emigration that resulted.
Spot on I think there, although the famine is big (half of my family are Irish for the record) so were the other things glossed over, and stuff not even really covered; but as you say the famine gets more focus in the US because it drove Irish migration there; one thing that’s often forgotten is that it drove migration to other parts of the UK too.

@@skippership7 it wasn't just the blight that lead to the famine, food that wasn't spoilt was taken by the crown and Irish Catholics were left to starve and what wasn't sent to England was given to the higher ups ie Lords and earls and soilders. the famine was mass genocide, Irish history is a brave subject to cover
@@gilliandavidson8700 I agree and I think we all know that 1,000’s of tons of food was shipped from Ireland for profit during that terrible period and no one is denying that is not the case, least of all me, but let’s also be clear, that the man principally responsible for that shame was also a fellow Celt.
As a Northern Irish person from South Armagh you really see alot if the effects of the anglicisation of the north such as, if you look really closely, alot of the Catholic farmers have more boggy, mountainous grassland even today because that was what was given to their ancestors by the British when the British took over Ulster and planted plantations, such as Omagh as it is a plantation town. You will notice that alot of these plantation towns like Omagh and Coleraine still look very artificial (there are very good sources online I imagine of this topic)so alot of the reasons the British took over Ulster is yes, religion, but they also thought we were savages and we needed somebody to "lead" us

1079 - The Annals of Innisfallen chronicles Jewish residents as far back as 1079 and also references Jewish ambitions with "Five Jews came from over sea with gifts to, the king of Munster” It has been suggested that ‘gifts’ means finance clearly leaving a Jewish fingerprint on Toirdelbach Ua Briain’s imminent ambitions for Ireland

1286 - The last mention of Jews in the "Calendar of Documents Relating to Ireland" concerns Jews living in the English Pale around Dublin leaving English jurisdiction and settling in other parts of Ireland.
1348 - Black Death reaches England in June arrival in Ireland in Aug, Anglo-Irish colony’s were affected more extensively and radically than Gaelic Ireland were Jews had settled after leaving English jurisdiction.
1497- Sephardic Jews settled on Ireland's south coast
1555 - Sephardi Jew William Annyas elected mayor of Youghal, County Cork.
1569 - The Jew Francis Annyas (Ãnes) elected Mayor of Youghal
1576 - The Jew Francis Annyas (Ãnes) re-elected mayor
1581 - The Jew Francis Annyas (Ãnes) re-elected mayor
1625 - The Celtic King James I Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies.
1631 - Barbary pirates (Jewish conversos) kidnapped all but a few from Baltimore village in County Cork. All were sold into slavery.
1660 - Ireland's first synagogue was founded near Dublin Castle.
1798 - The Irish uprising
1810 - Benjamin Disraeli of Bettyville House, Carlow (uncle of British PM) held the office of sheriff for County Carlow.
1845 - The Jew Karl Marx's first trip to England In mid-July. The start of the Irish potato famine in September. Jewish MP Disraeli defended the tariff on wheat the only remedy to the Irish potato famine and opposed the Maynooth Grant Bill, a legislative act that permanently increased the funding of the Roman Catholic seminary at Maynooth in Ireland.

1922 - Ireland civil war (28 June 1922 - 24 May 1923). Collins shot and killed in an ambush by anti-Treaty forces on 22nd August. Soviet Russia was the first country to recognise the new Irish Republic
1927 - Jewish Zionist Robert "Bob" Briscoe enters the lower house of the Irish Parliament and remains until 1965
1934 - August 13th Irish Blueshirt Michael Patrick Lynch murdered by the State.
1937- So called ‘Irish’ Constitution specifically gave constitutional protection to Jews on Éamon de Valera orders. It was widely rumoured that de Valera's father was a Jew, although he publicly denied this.
1939-40 - Jewish Zionist Briscoe fundraised for Jewish Terrorist Irgun and described himself as the "Chair of Subversive Activity against England".

Hi Natasha and Debbie. I'm about 8 month's late with this ... but I served in N.I. in the early 70's and after I left the forces I went to live there for about 7yrs. There is a video on YT that actually shows our platoon doing our job in 1972. The hours were very long, 14-16-18 hours a day with only 4 days off in 4 months. After I left the forces and started living in N.I. I found that both communities were actually very friendly and they told me that the paramilitaries were stirring the troubles. Whether it was or not, I spent 7 happy years there and it is one of my favourite places on Earth :)

I think it's great that you're learning about different countries, I don't know a huge amount about America's history either - just some of the basic facts. I’ve watched this again. There is nothing you said wrong. You reacted without bias. The reason I enjoy being subscribed to you is even though I’m 59 I still love learning. Your sexuality is not an issue. You don’t object to me being straight. That’s someone without something intelligent to say but can’t so they try to hurt. I remember visiting friends in NI in the 70s and having to go through a search checkpoint just to go shopping in Belfast. People thought I was insane for going there at that time but they were just normal people carrying on their normal lives as best they could.
They were called ‘The Segment Gates’ and were put up as a result of the many bombings that had happened in central Belfast. Love them or loathe them, they enabled ordinary people to go about their day of shopping and business with at least a little more peace of mind.
Incidentally, the gates themselves were bombed several times and my Regt lost several soldiers who were shot whilst working at segment gates.
My mum, da, brother & sister were all born & raised in Belfast. I was born in US but lived there when I was 9& 13. I remember being searched doing our messages. I can recall parts of town where street signs said you had to have someone remain in the car while parked at all times . I love norn iron & the accent. My folks are still very strong.

I am from Northern Ireland and the reason that people were fighting over religion is because they thought one religon was being treated better than the other then causing the outbreaks of Riots and bombs.
The desire to learn is something to be admired and nurtured. You two keep your heads up and don’t be discouraged.

You have the gist but obviously way more complicated. Like when I went to the states 30 years ago and thinking I knew the beating heart of America. I live in west Belfast ireland. I am 50 and love your honest take on things. Like frappuccinos you two are a great discovery. Keep up the great work and god bless. By the way I grew up next door to Delorean and I had uncles who worked on the production line.
I live in a small town of strabane in County tyrone it's mostly Catholic, but you drive 20 mins away towards Derry you pass through protestant places you can tell that because there are union jack flags and the kerbs sometimes painted red white and blue.
Growing up in England during the 70s and 80s, any time I heard a Northern Irish accent on the news, it was because there had been another terrorist attack. My father was a police officer working in an office near government buildings in London and the IRA loved killing police and government officials, so I was very concerned. He also travelled home via train and on the night they decided to blow up the station he would have been going through at the time, he was saved only because he was hungry and stopped for a burger on the way home.
That night, he was very late home and unable to call us because of widespread disruption and everybody trying to find a phone box. He decided just to get on the first available train and get home to us as fast as he could. Aware only that he should have been home hours ago and that the station had been attacked at the very time he should have been going through it, we were terrified that he had been killed. My mother kept saying that he must be fine, because she would feel it if anything happened to him. When he came home, it was the most incredible relief for all of us.
In the 90s, I was working in Oxford. Twice, the IRA left semtex in a bookshop I went to every lunch hour. That felt very personal.
However, I see both sides in the Troubles and I believe firmly that Ireland should be reuinified. When I was a child, it seemed like the Troubles would go on forever, but in the end, it was the heartbroken families who lost people to terrorism who changed things. In Warrington, Cheshire (a place I knew well as a child), the IRA blew up a shopping area on Mother's Day weekend, hoping to catch kids shopping for cards. They succeeded and a boy called Tim Warrington died horribly. In Enniskillen, on Remembrance Day, they blew up a war memorial during a service. A nurse was killed. The fathers of the two victims dedicated all their time and attention to trying to bring the two sides together and create peace and it worked.
There are still political tensions, but broadly, we all get along now. It's so much better than it used to be.

The original independence movement was started by both Protestants and Catholics, only later did various events move it to sectarianism.
The Irish Tricolour first produced in 1848, has Green for Catholics, Orange for protestants with white between as a sign of peace.
My exwife was Irish, she came from Dundalk and would say how during the Protestant marching season, many Catholics who had relatives in the town would join them to keep away from any bother.
She was Irish enough to have the Tricolour draped over her coffin at her funeral in a small Welsh church.
May she rest in peace.

I nursed in Belfast durning The Troubles. It was a learning curve.
I listened to your reaction on "The Troubles" and you made comments that people were attacking you which is a sign of how people have changed in part because of the new technology and in part because people have changed in subtle and not so subtle ways.
I am 73 and because time passes with events and inventions changing our actions and thoughts without us being that aware. Because i am older i can look back and by definition those who are young can not look back .Looking back at the history is useful if people bother but my memories are alive . As an example i can remember an ordinary funural cortege passing by and a policeman saluting and men removing their hats. That does not happen anymore at least i have not seen it . There was almost no television nothing close to the internet and the main media were the newspapers so almost zero reaction and i did not see one demonstration in all my early life .Today there are street demonstrations all over the world [apart from a few countries] The point i make is that because i have those actual memories and when i stop and think about them it could appear that i was transported through time to today because times and people are so very different.People do not have the patience today [something i still hold on to] For the above reasons i am not in the lest surprised you have had some unpleasent comments that is very common today . Try to be pragmatic and expect such stupid comments because that is how things are and i regret to say that i do not see a reversal to the [comparative]sanity of my youth but a continuation of the present insanity to something even worse. For people to get excited about a corrupt system of politics makes me laugh.

Great video. As someone who lives in Northern Ireland the troubles really had a massive impact and still does. Also there's a new film called Belfast coming out which looks at a family during the troubles and you should give it a watch when its released.
Remember well a small military turret which had only few young soldiers pied piper ING it away from the town to save people n buildings.. We had nothing but garden tools to protect us from the fierce enraged hating 60-100 clinging o vechiles.. horrid evil insane tempers of ppl trying to get at our NI ARMY personnel who saved town. Live hoods. Ppl from damage.

Hey there from Belfast Northern Ireland, it was really interesting to see you learning about my country and my history. Love your commentary and please don’t listen to the hate, you guys are great.
When talking about modern Ireland one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights.
This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on).
People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics ever since then

Escaping the Potato Famine in Eire my Catholic family moved to Wales ending up in Liverpool. My sister has since married a Protestant Ulsterman living in Belfast. Most if not all of our family have renounced religion and the “troubles” are never mentioned, as it’s like platting fog in a mine field.

Thank you Natasha and Debbie for showing an interest in the tangled mess that is the Troubles. No account will ever receive universal acclaim or acceptance as this is a really divisive topic and everyone tends to pick a side. I was a teenager in South Armagh, with relatives across the border in County Louth when the Troubles began. To be honest I really didn't know much about the history of the place at that time but you can imagine that an explosive situation like that at the beginning of the Troubles would lead to an interest in learning what was going on and why it was happening.
One thing that I could see happening was that there were two opposing sides mostly living segregated from each other, and the British had definitely picked a side to support, setting up an almost entirely protestant and loyalist armed militia within the British army, known as the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR), which became heavily involved in loyalist paramilitary activity, including murders on both sides of the border.
Generally speaking the UDR didn't operate openly in South Armagh as the army felt that its presence there would be too controversial, but that didn't stop terror raids involving UDR members who were also loyalist paramilitaries, engaging in bombings and killings along the border throughout the 1970s. On one such raid into the town of Dundalk in County Louth one of my mother's brothers was picked up one night and murdered. His body was found the next day dumped like a dog on a ditch in a lane not far from his own home. That was May 1976, and here we are in 2023 and his killers, of whom at least two were in the UDR, remain free. And proving that they also had skin in the game the British authorities are engaged in passing legislation that would indemnify their killer soldiers and agents who committed foul crimes during the Troubles.
As I said above, everyone takes a side. I side with my murdered uncle and my family who never saw justice while his killers were allowed fto stay free, certainly to kill again.

I live in Belfast and live beside the peace walls so I don’t need a tour of them as I see them everyday. I haven’t went to the titanic museum however and I really don’t know why because everyone loves it and say they thought they knew everything about the titanic and came out feeling like ‘wow I really didn’t know a whole lot’.

The area in general is great I went to the met and had a great time (well great for a period of formalised education and exams)
If you do go there’s a really lovely honesty bar quite close to the nomadic I would highly recommend
So sorry you have been subjected to such vitriol - it's difficult to know whatever motivates such people. Keep being you, as I know you will. As a mainland, English, Brit, I can say that I always supported the principal of Irish independence and unification. The petty squabbles over which version of their imaginary friend is better is just one of many such wars of silliness in the name of religion across the world and across time.

@@orwellianyoutube8978 There is very little to almost no difference between people north and south of the Northern Ireland border. Vast majority of people living in Northern Ireland were born in Northern Ireland and there nothing really English or Scottish about us at all, although many of the Protestants who live here may be descendants of such settlers (although that was 400 years ago so it’s hardly applicable today). But yeah, that’s it. Even as a Unionist I know to be true that while we are absolutely British we are also to a degree very much Irish/Northern Irish as well ☘️🇬🇧

I have friends from Derry who have lived in the UK for decades now, they don't speak about religion, we don't speak about religion in the UK anyway much, it's a private matter unlike in the US, while the Trubles is a big subject to tackle I would recommend that you show the second half of the video and then concentrate on the beauty of Ireland, we can't change history and I'm aware that wasn't what you were trying to do, the Irish people are blindingly intelligent and understand their history like no one else.

The whole island of Ireland is beautiful, visited many times as its only a ferry ride from Wales. The "Troubles" tour in Belfast is both fascinating and heartbreaking. I won't comment more on it out of respect for anyone involved. However if you ever come here, Ireland is a must, the scenery is amazing, the people are warm and friendly, and they have the 2nd best rugby team 😉 🏴 keep doing what you are doing, really enjoying, and ignore the haters 😀

As a proud Welshman, I visited Dublin in Ireland and went on a fantastic walking tour of Dublin called the Easter Rising Walking Tour. I’d like to think that I was fairly well educated and knowledgeable of British History. However, I was really surprised by how much I learned about Irish and British History during that tour in Dublin. Considering that Ireland was part of the UK at one time, Irish history was ignored in British eduction. I don’t know why I was surprised, because Scottish and Welsh history is also poorly publicised, in favour of “British” ie English standpoints.

Religious divide was used by nations, such as France, as a leverage to cause divide in an attempt to weaken the English powerbase. Also, different monarchs on the English throne veered either towards Catholicism (Bloody Mary - read about her and how she treated Protestants) or Protestantism. Basically nations were divided by the new religion and monarchs tried to impose uniformity depending on the religion they preferred.
Another example: French Protestants called Huguenots fled from France to other predominantly Protestant countries to flee persecution. England gave them refuge. About 45k fled to England.
In Europe, from the late 16th century onwards there was a conflict of interest between the forces of religion and nation building of which the Britain/Ireland issue is a good example of.
The Troubles in NI are the most recent in Europe along with those on the Island of Corsica (a French Island) and the Basque separatists (in Spain). Also - in Asia see the Sri Lankan Civil war. Although westerners often consider civil wars that far away "expected" because we wrongfully attribute the people as less advanced (far from it.)
When I was 5 years old way back in 1973 a car bomb went off about 120 metres from me. I remember the bang and my English grandmother throwing herself over me ,in case there was any flying glass, we then left the area rather quickly unhurt.

As an Irish person, I fully welcome people taking the time and effort to learn our history and understand our culture and struggles. People need to be mindful that the Irish-British history spans almost 1000 years. Even for an Irish person, there are elements that we still learn every day that we did not know the previous day. To an outsider who is new to the topic, gaps and misunderstandings are to be expected. The key is to educate and correct but not to belittle.
Religion is not much of an issue, it's more of a correlation as opposed to causation. Back hundreds of years ago, religion was much more seriously taken and that's why certain problematic laws were created to try and colonise the other group or force them to convert. But the Irish were fiercely loyal to their Catholicism whereas the majority of Britain were Protestants. The true heart of the struggle comes down to culture, nationality, and capitalist greed. Britain wanted to colonise Ireland and they used any methods necessary which often resulted in religious laws because technically targeting Catholics was only targeting the Irish.

I have spent a lot of Time in Belfast over the last twenty odd years and although things are a lot different now, the fire is still smouldering. My Partner, she grew up through it all, in East Belfast, a Loyalist stronghold. Her Father worked all his life in Harland & Wolfe, the shipyard where Titanic was built. I have met a lot of people, from both sides of the divide and as someone from Liverpool, I have always been made welcome. The ordinary person, just wants to get on with life and do the normal things that we all enjoy, sadly, there is still a minority that want to fan the flames. I just hope that those Dark days remain in the past, because the people who live there deserve a lasting peace. God Bless you girls, you are doing a fantastic job. Ignore the negativity, some people will find fault with anything and like you said, it says more about them 😊💞
You keep being you, you're both lovely people and it's always a pleasure to watch you and it's clear you're both very thoughtful and try to be mindful of viewpoints when commenting. As others have said "The Troubles" (but really the whole British/Irish relationship) is a highly complex one with valid and impassioned viewpoints from both sides that a short video cannot possibly attempt to do justice to. You are very brave to attempt to tackle such an issue on such a public forum such as UA-cam, personally I don't think I would have, but that's just me. Haters are going to hate from behind the anonymity of their keyboards, unfortunately that's just a fact of life, heck you'd probably still get hate if you posted a cat video. If it counts for anything, I very much enjoy your channel and your openness to learn about other cultures outside your border, working for an American company I often come across Americans who are ignorant of the world outside the borders of the USA, and likewise I am ignorant about a lot of American history. A willingness to learn, communicate, and understand something from another's perspective with an open mind I think are fundamental for us living together as a species in the world and such attempts should be welcomed, so well done for trying to tackle this very difficult subject.
