Normally an officer, especially high ranking officer like a colonel would be buried separately or even given to the union by the Confederates. But because he commanded African American soldiers, Shaw was buried in a common grave with them. When his father learned of this, he wrote:
"We would not have his body removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers. ... We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company. - what a body-guard he has!"

In early 80's in elementary school we had to do book reports every 2 weeks. In our library there were these books w/ red tape on the bound (to be banned by the state for inflammatory language/content). Of course i read as many as is could, and one of was called The Letters of Robert Gould Shaw, photo copied letters of Mr Shaw wrote to his mom during his tenure w/ the 54th. Truly magnificent piece of history... also know... when his mom learned of his passing and confederate burial.. she told the Union he is not to be exhumed as he is buried with the men he fought with... and she would have it no other way. Before my daughter was born, i travelled to that burial site wondering if he was near me giving me strength.

When they left the burning village, you see Shaw's men roll their flags up. This is to keep their flags innocent from the shame before them. The Flag was treated like a living thing, with more dignity than we see today. I was so impressed that thy kept this bit of detail in this film.

Powerful historical drama about the real life 54th Massachusetts. I highly recommend reading about these highly respected men. They continue fighting long after the events depicted in this epic movie and gain many honors.
Fun Fact: Very early in the movie, Union soldiers play baseball. Considerable dispute remains about exactly when, where, and how the sport was invented, but the Civil War itself had a significant role in the sport's rapid growth. It became a popular pastime for soldiers on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, who spread it around the country.

The first battle where Shaw is wounded was the Battle of Anteitem which was and remains the bloodiest day in American history with 23,000 soldiers killed. It was a draw on the field that Lincoln was able to claim as a victory because Lee had to retreat back to Virginia.

The camps look so realistic because they have civil war re-enactors or living historian that perform their portrayal year round near or even on the actual battlegrounds. The largest display I've heard of was 15,000 actors playing to 50,000 spectators, the American journalist/business/billionaire is a huge enthusiast actually made a cameo in the film Gettysburg. Also tents, clothing and equipment and cannons all have a level of authenticity because they were probably battle worn over years of re-enactment.

This is one of the most underrated, epic, beautiful and powerful films ever made. So few people do reactions to this and I am so glad that you did! Robert Gould Shaw was only 23 years old when he assumed command of the 54th Massachusetts. His bravery and sacrifice is astonishing and an Admirable record of the Abolitionist spirit that was so pervasive in the Northern States. Per Denzel Washington finally directing his anger where it belonged, you have to imagine; for his entire life he wouldn't have been able to even look a white man in the face. Never allowed to question. Never ever allowed to talk back. To even have a bad look on his face would have gotten his back torn off by a whip. To finally be able to not only fight a white man, but to be allowed by Law to stab him to death, up close and personal, what a satisfying explosion that would be for him. That is him getting his Justice. Finally. And lastly, the end sequence with Shaw turning his horse loose on the beach, from them til the end was more moving than most things I have seen in my life. The Confederates buried Shaw with his men as an insult to him, and many said his body should be removed and sent back to Massachusetts with his people. His parents said, those are his people and that it was a great honor for him to be buried with the men he fought beside, regardless of their color.

Some people think the Scottish Sargent was too harsh with the Soldiers he trained but the fact is Scottish Sargent's were always that hard including on the White Soldiers in training. Some people feel that Shaw was hard on his friend who joined and who the Sargent said has to grow up - but the Kernel was perfectly fair to his friend treating him with the same equal rules as all the other soldiers. The Soldier told Shaw "I am not fighting this for you" but when Shaw was killed he was infuriated and picks up the battle flag and tells them the charge! They end up buried on the beach one atop the other together in death - how I wish more people would contemplate this in Life!

I’m glad to hear that. It kind of bothered me that these (mostly) runaways, still legally considered property, at least before the emancipation, would be sent back in arms to fight their owners.
But since they were born free men, there is no question of their moral or legal right to join the army. Now it just bothers me that they would still be treated as runaway slaves by the South.

From what I have read, the decision to allow for units like the 54th was very controversial, even in the north. There was the concern that if freed slaves were sent back in as solders, the resentment would have made Tripp's hatred seem like polite conversation. Remember... the U.S. had to be re-united and that simple forage/pillage raid would have been a walk in the park compared to what it would have been with ex-slaves. Think of that a thousand times over and ever re-uniting could never have happened. That's why the powers that be decided to only allow for freemen to join.

@@haraldisdead Thank you for responding to my comment. Often folks that watch Glory think of Col. Shaw as simply an undeserving guy with family influence. His appointment as Col. was certainly linked to who he knew, but his previous rank as Captain in an infantry company was not. Back then, company grade officers (meaning lieutenants and captains) were elected by their men. That meant that in order to lead over a hundred men in a company, one had to be a good enough soldier to make them want you as the commander. It was totally merit based. Shaw must have had some special quality to be elected when so young.
As for his "minor" injuries, he'd been wounded before Antietam, for artistic license, his wounds were minimized in the movie.
Mathew Broderick's general appearance doesn't scream out big strong guy, but neither did Col. Shaw's. If you look at the monument, you can see that Col. Shaw and Mathew Broderick could have passed for brothers.
I often see comments that ask why did they just stand there in big crowded groups. There was a real reason for that. It was based on the fact that prior to the weapons of the Civil War, the largest factor in the win or loss of a battle was the shock of massed troops all coming together at the same time. From the time before Rome, massed troops had moved as a group to strike as a single unit. That's also why bayonet training was so important. Infantry might move to within a couple of hundred yards of each other before firing a single shot. They would then fire a volley or two and then charge. Had they started their run several hundred yards apart, they would be disorganized and most importantly, tired when they entered the hand to hand phase of the battle.
As for why the Union troops moved down that little beach, there was no other route to the fort. Even the troops that followed the 54th had to use that lane and they suffered massive casualties also. There were four major attempts made to take the fort. The General that Col. Shaw speaks with about leading the first charge led the final charge and was killed.
Something that really pleased me was how both you and your father recognized that the Irish Sgt. Mulcahey was not a miserable wretch, but was instead, wanting to train those men to be good fighting soldiers. Training was staggeringly difficult in those days and also hurried. There was not a lot of time given to what we think of today as gentle guidance. Remember; The entire population of both the north and south was one tenth (31 million) what it is now. They went from a tiny military in 1860 to 2 million in the Union and a million in the Confederacy. That means that 10% served. But... out of that total population, not all are potential troops. Figure ten million at most could serve. That means one in three served. Now, the population could probably produce seventy five million potential soldiers, but there are only a million in the military. We have the luxury of hand holding and sweet talk for our military training because we have time to spare.
Give my best wishes to your father. My thanks to both of you for reminding me just how much I enjoy watching Glory.

It has been requested to us a lot and we’re pretty excited to watch but the priority goes to the VIP patron requests first! :) it’s coming soon tho!

Remember the South didn't invade the North. They just wanted to leave peacefully but others fought because the union army invaded their homes. Most southerners had nothing to do with slavery. Originally it was Lincolns intention to just preserve the Union.

Yes they wanted to live and continue enslaving others...so glad they lost.

Lol, I'm pretty sure that you can't use that word, even if you are quoting someone, sir.
