Which strategies did you find the most helpful? And what would you like to learn more about? 🙂
When you said "networking is the thing that composers really hide from"...... Yeah, that actually hit me. I've got social anxiety, so I already have a hard time reaching out and interacting with others. But networking has always been my weakest area regardless. This video was a huge help though. And I plan to try incorporating these strategies as best I can moving forward. Thanks Zach!
@@TWDubThank you for sharing this and so glad it helped! You got this 🙌
Networking means "You-to-me, me-to-you" relationships. All the advice on this topic is about how to learn to lie. All those fake smiles and unnecessary congratulations on another turn around the sun... Congratulations to people you don't care about.
Sincerely kind attitude towards people is the key to success. No one in this world owes you anything, but you owe everyone.
Couldn't agree more! It's got to come from a genuine place of wanting to build relationships, not using people to find work.
These are things that you don’t hear enough of from Composers. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to effectively network at film festivals esp when you’re not a part of any of the films being shown. Appreciate you Zach!
Glad to hear this Joe! Thanks for the suggestion!
Am I a composer? nope
Is all this information relevant to me? Not really
do I watch every single one of these videos in their entirety cause I love Zach's videos so much?
absolutely!
Great video as always!
😁 Appreciate your support! 🙌
Insane amount of value Zach! 🙌
Hey thanks for watching man!! 😁
Hey Zach! Just want to say thank you so much for your videos! I watched your video on programming orchestral runs yesterday, and have dove into your channel since. Super appreciate your content!
So glad to hear this! Thank you!
Brilliant tips Zach! I definitely made some of those mistakes when I first started. Also something to add, taking the time to network can be difficult especially when as a composer you feel like you have to focus on composing all the time. But taking just one week to focus on networking effectively makes a much bigger difference than writing more music for that one week. I recently had a few weeks where I barely wrote any music at all but some of the conversations I had with the people I networked with have made that time more productive than the last 6 months of music writing.
Gaby, thanks for sharing! I definitely made these mistakes too - glad this resonated, and so glad you're getting some networking wins! 🙌
I cannot tell how many cold emails we get per day. Best to connect through your network. I like hiring folks the peeps I work with recommend, or people who I get chatting with and find interesting. Most def connect with people one degree away before you try cold calling those 3 or more above
On the note of composers and performers hiding away from ya, I recently started casting for vocalists in Asia, and boy, even for a paid gig folks are too shy to connect, even when asked. Don't be afraid of the opportunity when it comes up
Awesome points and great insights - thanks for sharing!
You do not get enough views for your efforts. Nice video!
Thank you!
I feel very called out... But in the best way! Thank you for sharing this🙌🏼
Glad this resonated!!
I'd never really considered building relationships with other composers to find work. Would it be worthwhile to network with people in any part of the industry? I've been thinking of trying to reach out to some local indie studios to see if they need some music, for example.
How does this process translate into composing work in a more concrete sense? You build relationships with various people and somewhere down the line they'll say "Hey, I got a lead on a project, I can refer them to you if you'd like"?
Also, in regards to continually reaching out (via social media, on holidays), I feel like it could come off as if you're just coasting along in a slipstream hoping to get something out of them (like those little fish under manta rays), and that is kind of what you'd be doing to an extent, so how do you approach that?
Awesome questions! I'll probably cover these in a separate video, or in the email course on networking I'm making. Short answer is focus on the joy of building the relationship over the "hopefully getting work someday" approach, and things will fall into place more naturally - that means it'll take time, but the payoff happens!
Absolutely valuable information, Zach! Thank youu :)
😁🙌
Hey, may I ask what software or app you're using in this video to display your text and stuff?
No prob - I'm using Notion! 🙂
Hey Zach, do you have any work for me?
😆
You're hired.
