  • On June 29th 2021 El Toro at Six Flags Great Adventure was operating normally. As Train "A" was dispatched from the station, everything seemed normal. It was only once the train dropped off the first drop that the problem became apparent. The investigation into the accident would take the better part of a year. El Toro is scheduled to reopen the day this video is uploaded.

At the same time, this incident shows how safe rides actually are today. Despite the last axle of the train derailing, not a single person sustained any kind of injury during the incident. To the riders, it was just an inconvenience having to disembark somewhere along the track (GP) or a once in a lifetime opportunity to walk along the track of El Toro (enthusiast).

@LilAnthonyOdd It's not weird. Nothing is worse than someone telling you that the ride is safe and that the conditions that caused the accident have been corrected. It's much better understanding just WHY it happened rather than just take someone's word for it that everything is fine now. Knowledge is power! It can seem like you're just "kidding around" about a roller coaster being moody... That somehow inactivity invited wear that the usual "unseemly forces" of daily action would somehow be less abusive than a less intense year or even a year of inactivity altogether.
What's interesting and a little bit scary is that machinery NEEDS to be used. That's also part and parcel with the engineering in the design phase. A year of sitting WILL create issues in almost any machine of any value for any purpose. Carburetors in engines get shellacked, fuel filters, oil filters, and gear-box filter-screens deteriorate at least, and get hopelessly clogged at worst, and moving metal parts that usually get glossy for the constant friction of daily use will rust or corrode over time...
On a roller coaster, there's a predetermined series of presumptions about the average working load, and frequency for a daily use ride. This is all part of the purpose in engineering such machines as carnival and theme-park rides. They ARE designed to move and carry passengers... That's ALL part of their routine maintenance, and a fairly specific scale, intensity, and frequency of load is built into them and their ratings from the time they leave the "drawing board".
SO the absolute short-shortest form of answer to the question would be "Yes, they can." Even that we ALL know it's only so much inanimate metal, wood, plastic and rubber... it can also "sit to death, no different from your car or my motorcycle. It was MEANT to be ridden, so long as the strains are within the manufacturer's guidelines and ratings. ;o)

I was a lifeguard at Schlitterbahn the year the slide first open and a couple years before the slide decapitated that kid in Kansas City. The slide was supposed to open up in May but it didn't open up until August because the slide kept DECAPITATING THE CRASH TEST DUMMIES because the raft wasn't on a track it was just going down a slide. They ended up taking the whole slide apart adjusting the angle slightly and putting it back together again. Even then there was a scale at the top of the slide to weigh people on and and there was a minimum weight then they had to choose people who weighed about the same to sit in the front seat and back seat and the lightest rider in the middle. PLUS the seatbelts were just velcro (we all know how long velcro lasts in water and being constantly opened and closed hundreds of times a day). I still had friends who were lifeguards there the year that boy was killed. They said they had gotten rid of the seating rules and so what happened is two heavy women were in the front and middle seat of the raft and the lightweight little boy was in the back. So when the slide started down, the front of the raft was too heavy and the back end lifted up and the boys head was above the tunnel while his body was in the raft below going into the tunnel. His head came rolling down the slide after the raft. It was a senators son too. This whole thing could have been avoided if Schlitterbahn had maintained their seating rules or you know HAD AN ACTUAL ENGINEER DESIGN THE SLIDE INSTEAD OF THE OWNER WHO HAD NO ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE. Anyway I think about this little boy a lot. EDIT: I forgot to mention that everyday before the park opened the lifeguards had to test the rides by riding down them and most of the lifeguards would refuse to ride the Verruckt (sorry forgot how it was spelled) we had seen it kill crash test dummies for months and months there was only like three of us that were brave enough to ride it.

This is totally unrelated to this situation but kinda see how it may have triggered the memories for you. I’ve read a lot about that accident and it’s completely messed up. There’s a lack of oversite for water slides in general and I think overall the margin of error is way higher with them. But what happened with that slide in particular was just straight idiotic negligence.

I had a feeling that this was caused by the track bowing outwards, but I thought it would've been temperature related. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner, since it seems no one had any idea that this could occur. It's also scary how much worse it could've been. What if the back car disconnected from the rest of the train, or what if it violently fishtailed the entire ride. Then there would've been serious injuries and possible deaths. I'm also glad that there was a fix available that did not affect the ride experience in any way. The trains are still 6 cars long, and no trim brakes were added.

Im glad that the ride was save enough to not hurt anyone during this accident and that there was a lesson learned.
I love that the coaster industry gets saver and saver and on the streets you see cars that look like deathtraps everyday, but still coasters are seen as unsafe and driving is not by a lot of ppl.

My thoughts exactly. People say that they would never trust a roller coaster because they're too "unsafe", yet they'll willingly go into a car and drive on a highway.

So I worked at the park when this ride was being built. According to crew that I worked with back then, there was a lot of rumor floating around about why the park got the ride. The same manufacturer that make Kingda ka, make El Toro. Rumors said that because of the amount of technical issues kingda ka had with opening year, Intamin agree to building a ride for free, to prevent legal action. Rumors also floated around that it was a prototype and wasn’t design for commercial use. Well the park agreed and one year later el Toro opened. It’s a fun ride, it’s rough now, but I think there were some engineering miscalculations that are not starting to catch up.

  • @marcosacceleronhotwheels2806

its always a nice thing when the person talking is not someone that never even seen how anything about the subject works, but someone that actually does and understands many many things from the subject without stuff like bad google searches, people like real plane pilots, engeneers, etc. those never lie about things unlike low budget videos

El Toro is SO FAST and such a fun ride that can be actually painful if you're not bracing yourself for how extremely fast it is. It's wooden and from my experience wooden coasters can be BEASTS compared to other metal made ones. I'm glad their working on this rife because this is the 6flags that is closest to me and one I've been to several times and have alwayssssss had a blast! Going to! Never had any issues on the rides, with guests, lines were not unreasonably long, and just always had an all around good time 👍 👍

In 2013 I went here for my senior field trip. On this ride we got stuck at the lift hill, and had to be evacuated, from what I heard from former classmates who went there a few times afterward in the past and recent years, is that this slowly started happening more and more. There was a lot of issues that were going unchecked for years, it was little things though that probably at first glance would not be noticeable, but nonetheless should have been fully checked.

Rode it a bunch of times so far this year and it's as good as it's ever been. I was worried they would slow down too much to avoid damage and ruin it, but it felt just as fast as it did when I rode it a couple days before the derailment, and it was smoother with all the new track it got.

i really truly think el toro will be entering its rolling thunder era very soon. w the amount of maintenance work it’s been getting i feel like this year is it’s finally year of operation. it’s sad but let’s be serious. 2 incidents inside of a year?? temporarily closed twice?? it’s temporarily closed as we speak due to maintenance work. i really do think we’re gonna be saying goodbye to el toro this year.

Movies and the media has taught me that if something goes wrong on a ride it's instant death, so (as much as that can be true) I like hearing about how in most instances where something goes wrong no one dies or seriously injured...they make get scared or get stuck on the ride or gets some minor injury, but most ride designers aren't putting your life in the hands of a single bolt where they can avoid it.
