Before Whitey Morgan and his crew’s first headlining gig at the Ryman-the Mother Church of country music-Whitey (Eric Allen), guitarist Joey Spina, and pedal-steel guitarist Brett Robinson charge through their road-warrior setups that go heavy on T-styles, Fender amps, and plenty of phaser.
Whitey Morgan’s main ride is an early 2000s Fender Telecaster that started its life as a single-bound, black-and-white model. He quickly grew tiresome of its tuxedo look. With years of experience doing custom paint jobs on cars, he took matters into his own hands, sanded down the body, added a second bind, gave the top a sunburst look, and finally added pinstriped initials to the pickguard. He’s swapped out the neck four times and has always preferred the snap and pop of a Tele matched with a maple neck and fretboard. The current neck is from Warmoth and has a Keith Banjo tuner that allows him to quickly go into drop-D tuning. As a self-admitted tone fickler, Whitey is always trying new pickups, but has used these custom-wound models from a buddy in Michigan that are similar to Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. While he can split the coils, he generally plays both pickups in humbucker mode. The No. 1 uses Ernie Ball Slinky .011-.048 strings. The exquisite strap was handmade by Cody Hixon of Great Point Custom Leather.

Its nice to see a guitar magazine introduce new artists and bands that aren't just metal players. While I love metal I also love good Old School country music. There are a shit load of country pickers out there that just tear it up where some other guitar magazines ignore. I also never heard of Whitey Morgan until this. Checked out a couple of youtube vids and totally dig them! Buying their music !!

Country guitar is an entirely different ballgame, too. It’s an under appreciated art and it’s a style that most people really can’t understand the theory behind. Love some good chicken pickers.

I saw Whitey the first time in a little bar. They were the opener. I said “ I’ve never heard of them I’m going next door for a minute “ the sound guy told me “ stick around, you’ll want the album before the first song ends”. He was right and I own them all.

That vol pedal is gangster. Being able to find your taper w/out having to go through a bunch of units or swapping pots. Fantastic idea and implementation. Glad he stopped him to point that out.

I thought I'd never favor one neck wood over the other but I don't like maple necks anymore. I don't like the spank, I like the thickness of rosewood. With that said, that rosewood Tele Fender gave him is the best one in that rack in my opinion.

Get some Lollar or Lindy Fralin pickups for that 74's custom deluxe tele to brightened the sound, that's odd usually those original seth lovers designed humbuckers are bright humbuckers, or he could wired it 50's style to brightened up the sound.

Why didn't John do this run down? No-brainer - you guys missed the mark this time. No offense to this interviewer but John is certainly better at letting his guests do the talking and John should have been doing the questions on the steel (and the Tele's for that matter). Also, thanks for introducing me to W/M!!!

The interviewer asked him about the pickups on his #1 guitar, and he says how great they are, that a guy custom wound them for him 4 yeas ago, but he can’t remember his name. Then he asks him about his guitar strap and says how beautiful it is, he agrees, and once again he can’t remember the guys name who made it! The guys that made his pickups and strap have probably been waiting years for him to do a high profile interview on his gear...and he can’t even remember their names...and as someone who makes a boutique music product, I can just feel their frustration. You hand out free stuff to these artists, and you wait and wait for your product to be mentioned in one of your endorsers interviews, and time after time you read through or watch the entire interview all the way through, and you have that ache in your gut when you get to the end and nothing. It’s sad that so many of these artists forget how they got to where they are, and who helped them out along the way.

I just wish he would have given them credit by name. I watch all of these Rig Rundowns, along with many many other artist interviews...and they always make it a point to thank those folks that make them shine.
