I really loved it! Not as much as Lock Every Door, Home Before Dark, the Only One Left, or The Last Time I Lied - but still. I was so here for all the nostalgia I was feeling and I loved the stuff with the institute. I do sort of wish Sager had leaned into the culty vibes more but I still enjoyed the read. And I loved little Henry. He earned the book an extra star for sure.

I really enjoyed Middle of the Night. Reminded me of summers in the 80s when all the parents were at work and we got up to no good. Never was a missing kid though.

Maybe it's because this is my first Riley Sager, but I gave this a 5 star! I loved the cultish and ghosty vibes and the way this small neighborhoods closed door drauma was piling up the suspect list. It felt very scooby-doo in the end, because the monster turned out to just be a drunk teenager. I was pleasently surprised, and had a good time.

Liiiike having so much paranormal vibes only for it to be the most mundane random thing is NOT it

Love that this is a family tradition for you all! Have they tried Ruth Ware or Lucy Foley?

I really like that nothing paranormal is happening because I HATE when thrillers do that. So thank you, person in the comments who spoiled House across the lake for me, I am never gonna read that :-) I didn't give it 5 stars, because the death was an accident, that was a bit anticlimactic...

Omg I agree so much I hate when something is explained by something paranormal unless it's like a haunted house story, the existence of ghosts and stuff has to be determined from the beginning. It sucks when it's like a normal thriller and it just so happens that everything that happened can be explained by sth paranormal

Thank you! I was so sick when I started reading this and wondered if that was why I'm having such a hard time getting into it. This is the first book of Riley Sager's I've tried to read but am bored! Might DNF for now and try a different one of his.

Definitely pick a different one, The Only One Left, Lock Every Door, & Home Before Dark would be my top recs or The Last Time I Lied

I still don't know how I'm gonna rate this one but I think the moment I was most excited about was during the mention of the book House of Horrors from Home Before Dark.

I really enjoyed this book(4.25)... Loved the slow-burn mystery... And I did get to go and see & hear Riley Sager speak about this book and maybe that helped my enjoyment knowing where the inspiration for this story originated 🤷🏻‍♂
The Last Time I lied & Home Before Dark are still my two favorites... Lock Every Door is one of my least favorite of his books... Right down there with Final Girls

I gave it 2⭐️ as well, and it was my first Riley Sager book 😅

What struck me about this book was how I didn't have any emotions while reading it. No excitement, no curiosity. Usually I feel boredom if nothing else, but there was literally nothing. Also, I can't get past what seems to be a very obvious plot hole imo

The police checked the road right? Ethan makes a point to tell us they didn't find anything there. But if Billy was hit by a car, wouldn't there be a mess? Or at least something that would indicate what happened? The cops didn't notice the driver's car when they supposedly scoured the neighborhood? Shoddy police work if you ask me.

This was so boring and such a disappointment after The Only One Left! It felt like a bad homage to stephen king with stranger things mixed in.
    SPOILER ALERT❌❌❌❌❌❌❌
Why even include the Institute at all?? This plot line was barely explored! & occult and cult mean two different things! Also the main character was just incredibly stupid. Let me buy an expensive camera then hardly ever check it because it’s probably a deer or whatever. Let me forget Billy has a whole brother who heard him say hakuna matata a million times. & I knew it was Ashley, I just didn’t know what her motive could possibly be. Turns out none 🫠 just an unfortunate accident
