It's now Feb 2023. I came across Ann and Eugene's book on Amazon in the spring of 2022. I was living in British Columbia at the time but I was born in Ontario (Canada). I am a senior citizen and I fell in love with their story in the book, Fair Isle Knits Simplified. I'd thought how I'd love to get out to their farm if I ever made it back to Ontario. So I did an online search and found out they had both passed away in 2020. I felt very saddened not only that that they had passed, but that none of their children had carried on their farming legacy. I moved back to Toronto 3 months ago. I just found your interview today, Feb 12/23. How very poignant. Thank you so much for this interview.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your husband and daughter have been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard the sad news. I lost my husband of 40 years to cancer. I know these next days, months and years will be tough. Lean on the Lord and each other. My heart aches for you.

Hello Andrew and Andrea! I've recently discovered your podcast, and I am so happy that I did. I am 15 years old, and most of the things that people my age watch on UA-cam just aren't my kind of thing. I have been knitting since I can remember, and it's all I love to do. I feel quite alone having knitting as my passion, because no one else my age knits, and none of my family enjoy knitting either- no matter how much I try to make them!
Around Christmas time last year I was in my local yarn shop with my family, and I spotted a tiny little sign that said they were looking for knitters to knit garments for them to be put on display. The ladies in the shop asked me to bring some of my work in so that they could see my skill level, and so I did. And they were really pleased with my garments, and so they took me on as an outsource knitter! It felt so good to have my work appreciated! I've been working for them since then, and I can't believe my luck. They pay me in vouchers, with which I buy more yarn for myself to knit my own projects. Because of this I am able to buy better quality yarn when otherwise I could not have afforded it!
I'm also going to College in September to study Art & Design. This is a really scary prospect for me, because I have been homeschooled since I was 12, and I was scared of how people (students and teachers) will react to my passion for knitting. I had an interview last month, to which I brought a portfolio including my paintings, drawings, and... my knitting. And I was so surprised to find out that apparently a lot of the teachers knit too, and they were very impressed with my knitting! This made me feel so relieved to know that when I go to college, there will be people there who understand knitting, and therefore understand me!
I'm also currently studying the Knitting diploma course, which is a level 2 diploma available as an online course on the centre of excellence website! I still can't believe that I'm studying a real knitting qualification, that I can put on my CV!
I just feel so lucky, because had I not seen that tiny little sign, these opportunities would not have opened up for me. And I'm writing this comment to thank you for your amazing podcast, because you both help me to feel less alone in my love of knitting. I'm am very very grateful! x

I am only just now making my way through your earlier episodes ( although I am not a knitter) and loved the story about Anne and Eugene. I went to the website only to find that they both died in 2020. So very sad they were such loving and gentle people with a mission to save the great lakes and taken far too soon. RIP Anne and Eugene.

Andrew and Andrea-- I am so happy to have found this treasury of videos that you have produced.
I knit as a child but as many do, I set it aside for many years. About 25 years ago, I lived about two hours away from Philosopher's Wool. My husband and I took a day trip to visit them and the trip renewed my love for knitting and fiber arts. During that time, I knit several two handed Fair Isle sweaters, and took several classes from a lovely yarn shop in Hyde Park Ontario ran by a woman named Linda. I moved from the area about 20 years ago and since then, work consumed much of my time. During the pandemic, however, I have once again picked up knitting. I always thought that I would have time to devote to knitting, and other handcrafts after retiring. I still have not retired, but working from home has given me more time to pursue these activities. I am looking forward to going through all of your videos. A heartfelt thank you to you both and best wishes for health and healing.

How I wish I’d seen this 3 yrs ago. We’re assured it’s possible to keep the same tension with 2 strands but it’s driven me mad. And allowing the strand at the back to have sufficient length for stretch when it’s worn. Thanks so much!

Many years ago and a few Philosopher's wool purchases later, I ran into Ann and Eugene at Stitches in Baltimore. They quickly decided that my friend Marilyn and I should join them for a Maryland Crab Cake meal at a nearby restaurant. Let me just say it was one fantastical evening. Even if they didn't knit they would be a joy to spend time with. Since I haven't seen them for years it was lovely to watch you have the chat with them in this episode. I have been been 2- handed knitting fair isle for over 50 years now and can vouch for Ann's videos as one of the best. In the last two years I've traveled to Shetland 4 times where I've become friends with Hazel Tindall. I am certain she would be happy to skype with you.

I’m going back and watching all the episodes I missed. I love Andrew’s knitting watch idea. I was knitting a score scarf (row for every point scored in American college football - Clemson University 2019) and knew I’d get a lot of people wanting one. So I used my fitness watch to get an average time per row. The scarf came out over 10 ft long. When I posted a photo, I also let people know just how long it took to knit. Not one person asked me to knit them one. Andrew is in my thoughts daily.

Hello Andrea and Andrew, thank you so much for this high quality post cast.
I am attempting my first Fair Isle sweater and this interview was very informative. I got the book and immediately start to learn the Bourgeois’s technique. It’s pretty easy, I love that the yarn gets anchored and the fabric doesn’t have long floats. Also, it’s easier to keep a good tension. I am with you Andrea, a good technique makes the difference in anything you do.
    Regards from Phoenix, Arizona,

I found your podcasts through Fleece and Harmony, and have started at the beginning, following Andrew’s sock adventures. When I saw that you were interviewing Ann and Eugene I was thrilled. Many years ago I was taking a glass on color work, and the teacher showed me how to knit the color work which I thought was very cumbersome, so I started looking for alternatives, when I stumbled upon Ann’s video on their site. It was brilliant, and have used the method on all color work that I have knitted.
After listening to the interview, I knew that I must have the video so I went to their site to order , but it appears that there is some problem. I called the contact number and the phone was answered by an out of breath Eugene, who had been chopping wood.
We had lovely conversation and I was able to order the video.
It was a gift to speak to him, as are your podcasts.
I am on number 8 so I have much to learn and see your beautiful knits, interviews and extreme knitting.
Thank you so much for your podcasts.

Hello Andrea and Andrew. I knitted Lovage in 2015. A word of advice to anyone who plans this garment. Do not worry if it looks too short when you start the fair isle section. I knitted in extra length and instead of a nice neat jumper I've got a tunic. When the weather cools down here (had a 40degC+ day earlier in the week!) I plan to cut, remove the extra length and graft it back together.
I'm enjoying the podcasts, especially when you feature knitters and designers, some of whom I'm fortunate enough to have met.

I have watched all of your videos and I really enjoy them. I have been knitting for 2 years, mostly vests and hats for my 2 year old. I attempted a sweater for myself and it was ok. There were no instructions to add a collar and the fit was sloppy, so I thought all knitted garments had loose neckline, you have opened my eyes. Hopefully when you have the time you can do a tutorial on adding a collar and seaming a sweater. Best wishes to you and your family.

I learned the Fair Isle weaving technique from a Kaffe Fassett book sometime in the early 90s. Maybe he learned it from Ann Bourgeois.

Almost forgot to add to my previous comment that watching Andrew navigate two socks at the same time is the reason I don't do it. I ended up with a tangled mess. Now I use two sets of needles for magic loop and just work back and forth on each part and they get done at the same time and are so much easier to handle.

Hi Ann, Andrew here. I thought of that - two sets of needles. Should be a good way to keep them the same length!!

I love your podcasts, they are interesting, informative, engaging and so much fun. This weeks interview was such a joy. I had never hear of this couple and came away from the interview feeling so appreciative of their har work and commitment to their art. As a naturalized Canadian I feel so proud to learn about these fellow Canadians. I also enjoyed the music, it reminded me of my dear father, who was singing? Is it John Mc Cormack?

I have recently found your podcast, and am working furiously to catch up. Thank you for the incredible wealth of information you have collected here! I am just starting to get into stranded colourwork, and the technique you discussed today from the Bourgeois's has completely blown my mind. I'm debating ripping back the mittens I started this week and re-swatching using this technique. When using this method, which color ends up being dominant, the right hand or left hand? Thanks again!

Hi there. Loved the podcast and lovely to hear John McCormack singing on the last interview. Did you know that 1. He is Irish, 2. That he was a Papal Count so he is known here in Ireland as Count John McCormack. It was an Honour bestowed on him by the Pope of the time. Not sure about why he was made a Count. Also, you may have heard of Frank Patterson, another Irish Tenor who was also made a Papal Count by Pope John Paul 2nd for singing at one of the open air Masses when the Pope came to Ireland in the late 1970's or early 1980's. Can't remember when it was. just a bit of info for you. you are a beautiful singer Andrea, please let us hear more of your beautiful voice in future podcasts. Really loving them so keep up the good work. Till the next time...! 😉

Hello Andrea. I have been following you about two years, but I haven't seen the early podcasts so I started from the episode 1. After seeing this episode, I tried to buy the Philosopher's wool DVD. I have knitted Fair Isle but I want to learn more about the technique. I can't order the DVD so I went to Amazon but no DVD. There's no library near me (I live in Geneva Switzerland) which got the DVD. Is there anyone else teaching Ann's method which you mention in this podcast? I am a "learning by video" person and not very good with books.
By the way, I watched your tutorial on "Blossom" and I finished it yesterday💕It was very difficult for me especially the neck part didn't fit me and I was forced to invent(?) something for me by redoing it 4 times.
I'm going to start Christel Seyfarth "Check jacket with zipper" (for this I wanted to check Ann's method as Christel's video is not very clear and she speaks Danish, I think). I got this kit after I watched your podcast on her work. I just love all which you show us.
I think your podcasta are just wonderful. Please keep doing the good work.

I have a question about gauge swatching. If all designers knit a gauge swatch in stockinette, couldn’t we all just knit stockinette gauge to match, and extrapolate that to mean that our garment would match theirs? I hate it when their gauge measurement is from the finished, blocked object. If their stockinette swatch is with the same yarn and needle size, and we match that, doesn’t that strongly imply the finished object sizes will be about the same?

Katherine from Austin, it's Andrew from Offenbach here.
I have to admit that I wasn't quite sure how to take this question. There were a few dark moments there where I thought maybe you just weren't bothering to watch...
But - I have figured that you are probably planning to watch the show as soon as you get the chance, but you were just so excited about the jumper that you just had to ask straight away.
To partly answer your question, yes, it is a hand knit. To find out more, watch the show. We talk about it, and the designer, and the yarn. It is a great Spring - Summer jumper. I love it.
And to your other question, yes, Steven is Very Pink What-a-UA-cam-Legend Stacie's friend. We didn't know that he had made an appearance with her too.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi Andrea,
We love Andrew’s “Guido” sweater and I want to make it for my husband but I can’t find the actual pattern anywhere. Looked on Rowan, search comes up with nothing. Looked on Ravelry both with pattern and designer (Carlo Volpi, right?) and the design and projects come up but I can’t see where to get the pattern. Your Rowan link only goes to the site and not the pattern. By the way, it looks like the yarn is still available, but not all the colors. Any ideas?

Hi Robin. We were aware that it was to some extent off topic, but in the end as knitters, generally with some appreciation of wool, we are dependent on healthy natural resources. Personally we also feel like it is a genuine issue, and particularly as Ann and Eugene had been so generous with their time with us and with the community in general, we decided to give them some concern. It is amazing how many decisions you have to make when you decide to release something to a public audience, and we have to accept that we can't please everyone. Hope you can keep enjoying the show. Cheers, A + A.
