Agree with you! The JB is great espacially with effect, if you are a pedalboard bassiste like me, the Jazz is a swiss knife. Pb51 with neck pickup, Jaco with bridge only, both on got a full midrage sound unique to Jb. The tone on the Fender are the key, can dial different caracter. I used to put all knob up, but I discover that bass got multiple personnality. The Gibson Thunderbird with a pic is something to try. All great bass. Nice video
@@patwilsontrudeautanguayall5810 hey! How does you jb with distortion? I want to buy my first bass and I think I'll go for a jazz but I'm sure I'll play with distortion some times and I know single coils tend to be noisy. What do you say?
I just wanna say -- bass is so freaking cool. I'm pretty new to the instrument (came over from guitar) but I just love it so much. Everything about them is just awesome
All have their place in music but for me personally: 1). Precision: Best of all worlds, finger, pick & slap. Sits well in the mix best overall. 2).Jazz Bass: Similar to the Precision where it can work for all but excels at Finger & Slap bass very well! 3).Rickenbacker: Great fun bass, awesome look but to me only excels in the pick player over the others. While not bad with finger style it lacks the low end of the others & slapping on it tone wise is better on the others. 4). Musicman Stingray: POWERFUL sound. Excels at finger style and owns the slap (jazz not far behind it). I do not like the pick tone from them though personally. In the end. All great basses to cover every style of play & genre. But if I had to pick one, the Precision wins for me personally with my playing. Great video!
Boone382 I don't play yet......someday I want to learn......I agree with what you've said here......I learn a lot from videos and player's comments.......👍👍
Nothing better than a Rick, Stingray or Jazz on certain songs and styles while the P gets a great or serviceable tone on nearly everything, fits in most mixes like magic.
I’ve always loved the P and after this demo, it’s still my fave. Got one with round wounds and one with flats to take care of all genres from Motown to metal.
Well yes the jazz is of course his creation as well. But I think the p bass and music man were the two big ones for him, the p started it all and the music man showed that he was a fountain of ideas and knew how to make soild instruments that constantly pushed the boundaries of what a bass could do or "be" for lack of a better phrase.
P: "Standard-y" Jazz: Twangy Rickenbacker: Trebly Music Man: Nasally I've always thought of the Rickenbacker as a niche bass and the other three as must-haves. I really like the MM, but it's not great for everything. The P-bass is probably the most versatile of the four.
4 great basses, 3 awesome riffs/styles, 1 amazing player. Love that the Squier 70’s Vintage Mod J held its own with the rest of them. I have the same bass , V string version with stock pickups and to my ears it sounds pretty good in any style . I’ve always loved the look and sound of the Rick but have never actually played one. To me it sounded best here played with a pick. Didn’t care much for the Stingray sound in this video although they are great basses, especially for slap. P is just the iconic workhorse and sounded great with both pick and fingers. Very cool video!!!
1.) Fingerstyle - Jazz slightly edges P 2.) Picking - Ric slightly edges the P 3.) Slap - MM slightly edges the Ric Overall: 1.) P Bass 2.) Jazz 3.) Ric 4.) MM
Nice comparison. My favorite 2 Basses: Jazz & Stingray. I love em both. Someone needs to make a 32" Med Scale Jazz Bass !!! Enjoyed your video. oNe LovE from NYC
Damn, the stingray is totally love it or hate it! (I love it and own one, btw!) Thanks for the film, excellent comparison, slick playing - cheers! Personally, I think the Jazz sounds awesome, but I so much prefer playing a Precision I'd never go for one. I think the Ricky sounds best when distorted, love it all clattery and growling.
This is how all videos should be done. Same riff and same basic settings to compare. Awesome job. To me there’s nothing that matches a good jazz bass sound, especially for slap. Here’s how I rated them: Jazz > Pbass > Ric > MM
Ideally, I'd have all 4. Right now I'm favoring my Precision. Debating a Jazz or Stingray. Had a Ric just like that MANY years ago and would love one again mostly for nostalgia.
Nicest? Jazz (the one I'd play at home for my own pleasure). Best in a mix? Precision (first choice for recording). Coolest looking? Ric (most iconic and the one I'd love to be seen with). Most distinctive? 'Ray (it'd be my first choice for live use). Great video. Great playing. Lovely basses
I cannot help, ok it's a kind of taste but... This crispy sharp "Zing-Za-Zing-Zing" - that's so pure Music Man, i adore it. I'm a big P-Bass fan but I need a Sting. The sound is just killer.
Surprised of the amount of growl the rick has but overall it's a battle between the stingray and the jazz those tones got me into bass and yet can't decide luckily I own a sterling and an overwater jazz bass so I don't have to lol
Great shootout vid, no talking just straight up good examples. From what I heard: The stingray had the most extreme low end and high end which would really make it be audible anywhere and a tone I would call "beady" sounding but thicc, the P bass just has that classic cool rock sound that we all know and love and with the pick it gives it a whole nother level of vintage tone, the J bass was like a P bass but obviously jazzy/funkier and the obvious choice for slappa de bass, and the rick was very midrangy- making it very audible in mixes and also a choice of both Paul McCartney and Cliff Burton need I say more. NOT THAT you can't play any style with literally anything, love what you have, play whatever you want with whatever you want- that's uniqueness.
Great comparison vid. I like how you showcased the instruments both with and without the backing drum track, with no breakups. Not to mention the very tasty licks. Good stuff, man. Thanks for uploading.

Nice! Display of tones and classic basses. Well played FoniaS. Guys it would be silly for us to compare them with each other. Cos in the hands of different players playing different styles and players techniques they all get their time in the low end light on stage or in the studio. Ive played different styles from rock, country, funk, rnb, reggae, dub, pop & electro. Live and studio. I have a favoured pull to Musicman and Jazz basses as I like to snap, pop and slap. also those 2 basses were played by gun bassists I liked, But reggae although I dont own one... a fender p bass would be the one. Im not a fan of Rickys but heard on particular rock feels and pick playing they sound great for them tones. They all sound great and have their own unique characteristics. For me: Finger - really love all of them Pick - Precision because it's just so crunchy/growly, no sound like that Slap - Jazz (almost like it's meant to be) or MM Over favorite is the Stingray
Thanks, finally I get it. My guitar players ears tend to like the more mid-focused tones of the P-Bass and Rick. The Jazz Bass sounds amazing on the slapping side of things though.
I love to play a J Bass. because of "fun". A P Bass is (my point of view) the best bass you can pick to support a SONG. A Music Man has a unique Sound, but not that supportive. And a Rickenbacker is 100% pure cool look on stage! Except you're playing a Jazz gig ;-)
It has a LOT to do with which pickup he's playing over, which pickups are turned on (or off) and what the tone control is set at. The Ricky on finger playing was played over the back pickup which will make it sound brighter.
I mean, they're all basses so it's not exactly apples to oranges. More like Granny Smith to Red Delicious to Fiji to Gala. Different flavors of the same thing.
All the of them are great basses hard to say who wins the shootout though because all have been used in everything from funk to R&B. I have a few Musicman basses, a jazz bass and a P. When I gig I always walk with my Jazz Bass and seconds would be either a MM or a P😀
Excellent job making this video. Really well done! I'm guessing the Jazz is the non-authentic vintage. I don't remember seeing the black block markers back in that era (though they may have made them but I only remember the pearl ones) and I also don't remember that era of Jazz Basses sounding this good :) Sounds like you have better than stock pickups in there.
Thanks man. The Jazz is actually a Squier Vintage Modified model with a 70s decal and a new paint job. PUs are not stock either, but I am not sure of their make..probably old Seymour Duncan
For me.... Finger - P Bass Pick - 4001 Slap - Stingray But the jack of all trades to my ears, Precision wins. I've probably commented on this video before and said different lol
My dream bass has always been the rickenbacker until I finally got one years ago and it didn't sound as good as I thought it would. It's still the best looking bass ever though. My favorite sound has always been the Stingray but I never got one since I have small hands and a wrist injury so I used to only play short scale basses (I've had them all, fender mustang, Danelectros, Hagstroms, Hofners, EB-3's, you name it). I came across a Stingray a couple of months ago and the neck was thinner then I expected so I pulled the trigger. I don't slap but it sounds amazing finger style and with a pick. Love the growl! I had an American Precision and a Jazz bass and I hated them. The Stingray is probably the last long scale bass I'll ever own unless I can get my hands on a Electra outlaw bass or a Gibson RD Artist. I've owned close to 100 basses in the past decade including a bunch of Matsumoku made basses and quite a few rare basses. The best bass I've ever owned hands down was an Ovation Magnum III. It's like a Rickenbacker on steroids. The amazing quad coil neck pickup, the fantastic build and ebony fretboard! Out of all the great basses I've sold, this one haunts me the most. I think there's a video on my channel of me playing it. Anyways sorry for rambling and thanks for the awesome video. I'm not a fan of Jazz basses but I love the sound of the Precision when played with a pick. You're a lucky dude to own all of them. I'm gonna go through your channel and see if there's some videos of your other basses. I know they each have their place but do you have a favorite?
Hi Richard. I have to say that as far as the "big 4" demonstrated above go, I would choose the Stringray, if I were at gunpoint. The Ric will always be the looker, but the stingray fits has the sound I look for in most of the cases. Nowadays I am more and more interested in modern builds and my current favorite is a Padalka custom bass. I hope i will do a demo for it soon.
Sick ass riffs, bro!! I like different instruments depending on the style. Fingers = P, slap = J, pick = tossup between Stingray and Rick. That Rick looks crazy funky, too.
All excellent sounds, and I'm personally a Music Man fanatic (though the Sterling, not Stingray, has always been my weapon of choice), though I own parts basses in P, J, and Ric configurations (among others). I wonder, though, why it's ALWAYS these four. I feel like the Gibson EB basses are just as iconic and widely used/recorded, probably even more so than at least Music Man. Odd that they're hardly ever included in these sorts of comparisons.
Hi dude. I think it's always these 4 because they are the most popular and have the most presence in discography. If I had to narrow it down to 2 it would be P and J. The EB is fine and all but not nearly as popular (off the top of my head I cannot think of anyone using one as main bass) Plus it gets a bad rap for being muddy - Though I have never actually played one.
I've had more than one of all (only 1 Rick) over the years. For what you're playing in the first round the P bass thump with that characteristic high mid bark is the best, IMO. But the jazz has more room for other instruments and more versatility (as in the thumb). Pbass has a great wonky sound for slap that recalls the 70s Funk when it wasn't clear that the J was overall better for it. It's funny that your Stingray didn't really have what I think of as the characteristic sound. A Rick? Well as long as you have a keyboard player for the bottom end or you're going for rhythm bass, Lemmy style, and they feel so dang awkward. That first groove was a cool part!!
100% agree...😁👍 Ricks (including my own 4003) don't have any cojones. Weak AF pickups & 60 cycle hum for days so no good for gigs or recording, but it looks cool on the wall I guess.
Man! I'm really torn between the P-bass and the MusicMan. Pbass sounds great, as it is the 'support' for the band. It's simple yet amazing. Meanwhile, MusicMan is active making it the most versatile, plus it is the best looking.
Maple neck P is the 👑 of all basses, especially sith the action just low enough to dig and growl... This is why every studio and producer on the planet relies on one.. its simple and you can get any other tone out of the players fingers and tone knob. J is always less beef and springy... The rays are sterile and brittle.. Ricks are right behind the P and can almost get all these tones via volume and tine knobs.. But a P you can get so many tones just with your fingers, tone knob and strinf choices..
Love them all! I think the Jazz is the most versatile. Strong in all settings. That said a lot depends on the player. This guy was smoking!
Can we acknowledge how sick these riffs are
Thank you Joel's Dad!
Absolutely. I forgot about the basses for a while.
Can we get those Riffs anywhere?
Yes, yes we can. Particularly with the pick.
Actually I thought they sounded pretty good.
Stingray, however, a lot of musicians crank the treble all the way, sounds so much better half way. Good job!
this
I don't!! I use to boost them
Also when recording ?
so true... when you crank the treble on a stingray it loses the midrange and ends up making the mix suffer.
Halfway, so at unity? :D
I think this is the first comparison video where everyone isn't trashing everyone else's opinion. I can dig it.
Shut up! You’re a jerk and don’t know what you’re talking about!!😉

P-bass sucks for slap. You need the bridge pickup to get the twang and attack. Slap on P-bass sounds blunt.
I'm a guitarist, but am fascinated by the bass. This was a really good demonstration of the differences.

For me....
Finger - P Bass
Pick - 4001
Slap - Stingray
But the jack of all trades to my ears, Precision wins.
I've probably commented on this video before and said different lol
All are good, but the individual tones will changes each, thank you for your effort
I hope i will do a demo for it soon.
really helpful comparison! thanks :)
Excellent comparison, really helpful.
100% agree...😁👍
Ricks (including my own 4003) don't have any cojones.
Always go for the best looking!
Alright, I will! I needed this reply. Thank you.
nice collection of instruments. looked like 3 rics on your rack all appeared to be in terrific condition also!
Thanks dude. The other two are more recent 4003 models.
In order....Stingray, Fender Jazz, Fender P, Rbacher. Would have been nice to hear a Lakland Skyline here
Maple neck P is the 👑 of all basses, especially sith the action just low enough to dig and growl...
