    I really appreciate your attention to detail in producing such a great sound on your videos. Most important of course is your wonderful playing, but as well you've made sure to capture the sweet, warm tones of the guitar. On so many other guitar videos the sound production is often disappointing and not given much attention.

    I'd been curious about how you capture the audio for your videos. It's really good and I'm surprised and impressed that you get such good quality without using high-end microphones. Very cool!

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you! I think the nice sound starts with the guitar and the playing, if that's good, then a decent enough microphone will work. Can't be bottom of the line, of course... But if the initial sound is bad, no high-end microphone is going to make it better. I tell that to my students all the time, who want to spend a lot of money on high-end microphones to record themselves... I always tell them you need to fix your sound first lol

    • @ClassicalPan
      @ClassicalPan 3 роки тому

      @@GoharVardanyan I agree 100%. Also, learning to use the equipment you have first. I picked up a Zoom H1N, which isn't great, but I've heard some pretty decent videos from people who know how to use it properly. It's tempting to upgrade upgrade when you aren't loving your recordings, but I've heard some pretty awful recordings from people who use high-end gear, so like you said that alone isn't going to fix everything. 😅

    Fascinating and informative, very comprehensive break down of equipment, pitfalls and good practice. All that attention to detail explains why the video performances are so exquisite, capturing all the detail and colour of each and every note. Wonder if the acoustics of the room you're using plays any part in influencing the character of the sound?

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you. The room I record in doesn’t really have any acoustics, there are a lot of soft surfaces, carpeting, furniture… in some recordings the reverb is added later to give the sound a bit more liveliness. Of course if I had the space with naturally good acoustics, it would influence the sound and I wouldn’t need to add extra.

    Gohar, thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been waiting for someone to come out with a video like this! I have a few friends that use Logic Pro on their Macs and they seem to edit very easily, but I have a PC and am waiting for someone to give me advice on a good PC alternative to Logic Pro. Any ideas? Also, I want to tell you how much I enjoy "Grand Solos"! I pre-ordered it before you released it, and have enjoyed it ever since it arrived. The highlight for me is Cordoba, yours is one of my favorite recordings of it, and I like the rest as well. Your Tonebase lesson on Cordoba is also great.

      You are welcome! I’m glad you found it helpful. When I used a PC about 6 years ago, I only used Sony’s Sound Forge on it, then I switched to Mac and I’m never going back... so to be honest I don’t know what’s out there for PCs... I know a lot of pros use Pro Tools... but that’s way more expensive. Thank you for the kind words about the CD.

    Awesome Gohar! My god I could recall so much when you talk about the batteries dying, standing all the time to press record or the manual focus, and then get a beautifully blurred take (yeah.. never going Nikon again for autofocus... horrible). Feels a bit better knowing I'm not alone in this sufferance... hahaha When I can afford it I'll also take a Sony camera with the remote as well. Actually, the idea to have two sony cameras is a pretty good tip for those who record multicamera videos. Thanks a lot for that tip!. Keep up the amazing work, please! Loving all your music and productions!

    • @GoharVardanyan

      Thank you, Merce! Yes, we all suffer from the same problems lol You are not alone, we are in this together... Let's not talk about the 4 hours of editing it took to make this video, not counting the 2 hours of recording. I was sitting there putting all the little model numbers on the top corner until 2 o'clock in the morning. hahaha...

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  3 роки тому +1

      Also, having two cameras of the same brand is better because you don't have to do as much color-correcting to match the clips from different brand cameras... we all know they don't look the same... lol

    Thanks for the great video. Questions: When you record UA-cam instructional videos, what dB do you set the mic on, do you use a high-pass filter, and what mic dB level is set on your camera?

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  Рік тому +1

      On the camera I have it set pretty low, like quarter way maybe? I don’t have db markings on dial, I try to go as low as possible so the camera doesn’t add noise. On the rode video pro mic, I just go up to highest of the two settings when I’m doing the instructional part, and normal setting for the performance part if I’m using it for the performance, which is how I made All the Etude videos. Usually the guitar is too loud for the high setting. I don’t use any high-pass filters, I find that it distorts the sustained sound of the guitar, I also avoid noise reduction in post, for the same reason.

    Hello again Gohar, I have a request 🙂after I just purchased 2 Neumann KM184 mics, a focusrite 2i2 Scarlett interface and a set of Sony studio headphones. My request is for you to make a video going through the motions of recording classical guitar and your editing process in Logic Pro. I have tremendous respect for your playing skills and I'm sure I am asking too much, but I will try. 🙂 Thank you so much for posting your awesome talents...Steve

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  11 місяців тому +1

      Maybe sometime in the future I’ll do a video like that, but unfortunately at the moment that’s not something I have time to do. Also, I’m not an expert at using Logic, a lot of it is just trial and error. I’d suggest you start recording and learning how to use the software. Apple has a PDF guide and I’m sure you can find many tutorials on UA-cam from people who actually know what they are doing.

    Hi Gohar, you mention that logic allows you to stack up your takes automatically. How does this work? How to set up please? I suppose you need to setup some sought of loop function, but how do you stop it from recording over the last take? Thanks and I hope this question makes sense

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  2 роки тому

      I haven’t done anything special, I just record the first take, then when I want to do another one, I move the play head (or whatever it’s called) back to the beginning and record again. It doesn’t mean it’s going to sync everything, unless you’re playing to a metronome beat and start exactly at the same time with each take, even the first not might not be exactly in sync with the previous take. When editing I still have to move the takes back and forth to make sure the timing of the phrase I want is correct. I would recommend watching Logic Pro tutorials on UA-cam for anything you can’t figure out. I’m definitely no expert, I play around with it until I get the result I want.

    • @travelthebest2676
      @travelthebest2676 2 роки тому

      That’s pretty much my idea of how I will tackle it. However I’ve seen a clever logic trick that allows Your new or next take to be placed automatically below. It could be handy I’m just not sure yet how Implement it. Cheers and I enjoy your playing 👌

    • @GoharVardanyan
      @GoharVardanyan  2 роки тому

      @@travelthebest2676 it will be placed under it, but how in sync it is depends on when you start playing and how you play. In classical music we use rubato and ritardandos etc… those we won’t do exactly the same way, so chances are when you end up editing you will still have to adjust. Unless you play to a metronome.
