I always tear up hearing this song. It hits even harder in this video. OOR has quite a few songs that can tug on your soul. I reccommend you listen to Broken Heart of Gold.
Thank you for the emotional review. Just like the child in the video, I am also an Asian that went abroad to study at a very young age, and when this video came out, it hit like a truck. Personally I think the title "Stand Out Fit In" can have two meanings. First of all, the obvious one is shown in the video, a foreign kid coming into a unfamiliar culture. The way he looks, how he dresses, what he eats...it is different than everybody else, he is "standing out". In order to "fit in", he starts dressing like his friends, eats the same food, having the same hobbies...he is turning into "somebody else". The lyrics during car crash scene is like a self reflection on all the changes he chose to made, or rather, forced himself to make. Are these the correct choices? Or rather they are just standards that the society puts on you? This relates back to the chorus. At first, it may seem normal...boys are supposed to be tough and will not tear, girls should be quiet and should dress in what is considered proper. When it gets near the end, I had a new interpretation on the chorus. It is okay to be different and we should embrace differences. Don't just "fit in" mindlessly, it is okay to "stand out" and shine in your own way! Lastly, going back to my second speculation to the meaning of the song title. This song is one of the songs that they released after shifting their main focus to the Western community. This is the period where the supporters have sort of divided into two sides, one side embracing the new style in their song writing, while the other side claiming the old Japanese rock style (with hints of English lyrics) suits them better than the new American pop/rock-infused style and it is turning them into "just another American style rock band". I kind of get the feeling that the band will also be doubting themselves at time...if it was the right choice to leave behind the success they had in Japan and trying out a totally different genre of music, was it the right choice to have songs on English focused lyrics and melodies you would hear more often from American rock bands... And I think ONE OK ROCK has given us their best answer: "Stand out fit in" I am who I am No matter what Never changing No matter what

Personally, I always recommend the orchestra version of this song to first timers just because most ppl get distracted and/or confused by the dancing in the video that they end up completely glossing over the lyrics of the song. Definitely suggest you check out the orchestra version too.

The live version with them performing with the Japanese Orchestra is FANTASTIC. I was bullied my whole life, I still find it hard to fit in. The messages in this song are multiple .Big boys don’t cry/shoot low aim high/eat up stay thin/stand out fit in/good girls don’t fight/be you dress right/white face tan skin/ stand out fit in.
