Stan Laurel en Oliver Hardy - zeg maar L&H (niet te verwarren met Lernout & Hauspie) - dansen in de film Way out West op een countrywijsje. Ogenschijnlijk een simpel nummertje, maar eigenlijk geniaal.
I've just been to see the new film Stan and Ollie and John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan nailed this dance....fantastic...Hopefully a new generation of fans will get to see this video. Even the Avalon boys were laughing at the end. :)
I saw the new Stan & Ollie film today and it made me want to watch this sequence again; a timeless classic that never tires. Hopefully the film will introduce a new generation to their genius.
I remember watching this particular clip with my Late Father when the BBC were showing 'Way Out West' one Christmas Day morning. It made both of us smile. God bless my Father and RIP Laurel and Hardy. They were timeless.
"Commencement to Dancing" Commence to dancing, commence to prancing. Commence advancing, right and left a-glancing. Amateur dancing, slide and glide entrancing. You do the tango jiggle, to the Texas Tommy wiggle. Take your partner and you hold her, slightly enfold her, a little bolder, just work your shoulder. Snap your fingers one and all, in the hall, at the ball. That's all. Some ball
The original lyrics to the chorus are actually : Commence advancing, commence advancing Just start a-prancing, right and left a-glancing A moochee dancing, slide and glide entrancing Do the tango jiggle with a Texas Tommy wiggle Take your partner and hold her Lightly enfold her, a little bolder Just work your shoulder Snap your fingers one and all In the hall at the ball, that’s all
My Father . Myself. My Daughter and My Granddaughter four generations all breaking our hearts laughing at this . Just proving that there comedy is ageless. GENIUSES.
@@RobertMcIntosh How true ! I saw the movie earlier this week & was blown away by how good Steve & John were in their roles ! One of the best films I've seen in years !!
@@jubalcalif9100 I was hoping that it would be considered for the Oscars. After all, Best Picture can have ten nominations. I've been wanting them to extend their nominations in the acting categories from five to eight. At least that way Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly could've been considered this year.
The fellow sitting on the steps doing the yodeling is Chill Wills, who later after leaving his singing group called Chill Wills and His Avalon Boys, became a prominent side kick and supporting actor in many westerns and other films. He was even nominated for an academy award as a supporting actor in The Alamo.
Are you sure you've got that right? Chill Wills is the yodeler? I don't know anything about it, but having read your interesting comment just googled Chill Wills, and the Wikipedia photos don't look like the yodeling fellow, and the article refers to Wills's 'deep, rough voice'.

I have always enjoyed laurel and Hardy films. Not just for the great comedy chemistry, but the window into the past. It's a history lesson in itself watching the film's and the 1920,s /30s backgrounds, cars, shops and people. R.I.p Stan and Ollie and everyone else who was in these magnificent films
Somewhere on UA-cam is a clip of a couple in Toronto who set up a tape of this music in a shopping mall I think, then began the dance. In no time, dozens of others had joined in and there was a big crowd, all spontaneous, following the step of the original dancers. Lifetime hard boiled eggs and nuts to anyone who locates this clip and posts the url. Thanks in advance.
Musical accompaniment provided by Chill Wills & His Avalon Boys. That's an incredibly skinny Wills providing the "bass yodel." He went on to be a durable character actor through the 1960's. Check him out in "Giant" (1956), and "The Alamo" (1960).
I went to see "Stan and Ollie" this past week and enjoyed it very much. I am glad they used this bit in that new movie. Nothing like the original Stanley and Oliver, that's for sure !!
If these two weren't the greatest comedy duo of all time, then I don't know what greatness is. One ironic thing about them is that Stan was really the brains of the outfit.
About the hardest thing to do on film is to make someone laugh. Much of their comedy was so visual as it came out of an era that was just adjusting to the use of sound. L&H had not been dependent upon it. Look at the non-verbal aspect of their comedy. Ollie's slow burn in frustration [much like Edgar Kennedy] and Stan's hand and arm gestures portraying confusion. Words just came along later to be the icing on the cake.
When Mary Tyler Moore had her variety show, she featured a segment wherein she appeared to be dancing right along with L & H in this clip. It was fantastic.
@@MartinHiggins1972 The Stones are outstanding - one of the best - but there's just no one like the Beatles. Mick Jagger used to call them the "Four-Headed Monster."
My initiation to Laurel & Hardy was 8mm films that Dad used to bring home from the library in the late 60's. It was such a treat to set up the projector and pop some corn!
One of the most delightful things ever committed to film.
Can you imagine anybody watching this without a smile on their face?
I could not agree more ! This clip never fails to brighten my spirits and put joy in my heart !! THANKS for your insightful comment ! :-)

I was just thinking exactly the very same thing! Precisely the same thought. Exactly right. The best thing ever committed to film.

How light on his feet was big Ollie.
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe ! The late great Jackie Gleason was the same way !
immensely good on his feet for a man of his size -6ft1 and, at the time of filming, around 250lbs!
Not a bad set of pipes either, going from their rendition of "The Blue Ridge Mountains" later in this same movie.
Pretty lite for a nearly 300 lb man.
