    Failed to mention: Small creatures have disadvantage when using Heavy Weapons, so GWM/PAM wouldn't work so well if you were trying to also do small creature on a medium mount here (I'm not a fan of it personally, but keep it in mind). Also, Errata: Flaming Sphere is 5' diameter, not radius, so only occupies a single square (though could still burn a creature within 5' of that square, of course).

    Can I request a video? I’d love to see your character concepts for a full (4-6) party. Could be a shorter video where you just highlight their functionality instead of each level breakdown. I love how you add story paths to the character builds and would love to see you design a party that follow the same theme but are different classes.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks! I've had a few party of 4+ requests in the past and... I might get to it one day but the amount of time (both for construction and for the video itself) is a little prohibitive atm! :)

    • @jakubkucharczyk5255

      I think that cool concept can be made with a selection of Colby's builds: Fightarian, Bladesinger, Sorlock as the mighty trio. Sorlock casts twin haste on two melee characters and then quickens EB. For remaining party members, everything will fit, but I'd focus on support - Support Bard, "Battery" Cleric, or perhaps Tankadin for auras.

    Just played this combo in a lvl 13 one shot! The Coyote went abit outta the box and took Assassin and lvls of fighter champion, it paid off as all his sent attacks rolled 19s and dice went flying. The DM caught on to what was going on after i got my 2nd Unwavering Mark attack and reckless he started focusing me which pushed the rogue dpr way up. We both had alot of fun and will try out the Ying Yang duo in our next one shot.

    50:18 often overlooked item - Bag of Tricks. I think there are at least 50-50 odds any animal you pulled out is medium and ride-able. They do obey your wishes! I know its a magic item, but uncommon, fairly easy to acquire compared to others.
    Also the best taunt in D&D is a giant crab double claw grappling like a boss. Or toad tongue :P

    Regarding the DM metagaming thing, I think it makes sense for this strategy to work as intended against big dumb monsters that make the party feel powerful, but later on they encounter smarter enemies that can throw a wrench in their plans. It gets boring really quickly if every encounter is just back and forth melee attacks.

  • @nicholasf98

    I love the look of this duo. When I first started playing 5e, i gravitated to rogue and a friend of mine did the same but with barbarian. We ended up playing those two classes in Dungeon of the Mad Mage, which was a blast to play even if the dungeon itself is rather questionable.
    Now that this exists I'm going to look into playing these classes with him and just going hell bent for leather against every enemy in our vicinity. Good build Colby, and I can't wait for the next one.
    Also, while i have only watched Sessions 0 and 1, I am thoroughly enjoying ToA, and can't wait till I find the time to watch more of it.

    I played a wolf totem barb that was a Werewolf-themed Wildhunt Shifter... Reckless every turn! It was excellent, especially as that campaign gave a free feat at level one and let you shift your racial ASIs.
    Also, Pallid elf is my favorite race in the game. I use Insight and Investigation so incredibly often. I think since Wildemount came out I've only made one non-Pallid elf character.

    Just found out this content is also available as a podcast!
    Small unrequested suggestion:
    I completely understand the desire to draw more people to youtube instead of the podcast form, but I would suggest to advertise it too, even just in the video description! I wouldn't ever have found out if I didn't decide to search for it out of the blue.
    Here's my totally personal point. The content itself really work as a podcast. Sure, I can stare to that natural 20 jawline with ease, but I rarely have the time to sit for an hour and so for a full video. So, more often than not, even if I want to see the videos, I never finish them. Now instead I can listen while I work, or while I'm out jogging or commuting.
    From now on I have the possibility to listen to every episode and I'm pretty sure it will draw me in and I'll be more motivated to see a video when I have the chance.
    Just my 2 coppers,
    keep up the good work!

I plugged it a lot in the earlier versions but when the podcast just never really took off and the UA-cam channel did I just sort of... stopped talking about the podcast version :). Now it's more like a favor that I do for the few hundred people who like to listen instead of watch... maybe I'll get a sponsor for the podcast one day... /shrug

    It’s kinda hard to tell from the titles (even the ones with a + or “and” in the title) which builds are two characters vs. which builds are one character built from 2 classes. Maybe mark them out as a Duo-build or something?
    My brother’s a mobility-injured quadriplegic, and D&D is how he projects his mind into a functioning body, so we play together regularly. The idea to play a duo with intentional mechanical synergy never occurred to us before, so thank you for that! 🙏

    As a wolf barbarian I think I'd go subtle with the physical transformation. the big mighty protector would have puppy dog eyes! But when they rage they would get more beastly, maybe their canines grow out, maybe fur?

    I’m about to start a new campaign. I’m going to do a Bladesinger. I’ve flavored it after Alucard from Castlevania. With the new Dhamphir/Custom Lineage from the new books it fits nicely. Basically he will be the son of Strahd. He hates his father and kind of hates who/what he is (edgy I know) so he is a vampire hunter (insert Blade-like story hooks here). His Bladesong is him whistling a lullaby that his mother used to sing to him as a child. His sword levitates and moves on its own mimicking the fighting style of Alucard from the Castlevania anime. All in all it should be a pretty fun flavor to the Bladesinger you’ve already built! Cheers.

    Great video! I think that the warcaster feat could be interesting for the coyote: you get advantage on concentrating that spirit shroud and can use booming blade on your reaction attack.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! I actually considered this, but it's the reason I mentioned that the reaction attack you get from Sentinel is very specifically *not* an Attack of Opportunity - it's simply an attack made using your reaction, which isn't technically the same thing :). War Caster only lets us cast a spell as an Attack of Opportunity, unfortunately. Of course, your DM may rule that you can go ahead and let the two work together, and advantage on Concentration is never a bad thing.

Do they care at all? A raging Gnoll is going to act and probably attack a different creature than a skilled tactician. Unless they are completely cc'd out of their mind and all they can do is wail on the tank.(Or fail to wail on the tank.) I always like to explain these actions from enemies via roleplay as much as possible. I like the idea of the wolf being a firbolg and the coyote being ghostwise halfling. That gives it a nice woodland defender theme and the coyote can hide behind wolf every turn. That does mean giving up elven accuracy but I would trade it for mobility, to give me same movement as wood elf and no OAs. Also I think scout rather than Trickster. I think their skirmishes ability would pair nice with sentinel and mobilty to run around making sneak attacks while wolf holds the opponents attention. What do you think?

    There is an interesting work around for the Centaur with Lance: the Armorer Artificer
    You can go full plate, Arm-Lance (one handed, full lance stats), Repulsion Shield, Thunder Gauntlets on your front hooves, and boots of teleportation on your rear hooves. Give him some fighter levels (Rune Knight), go full in on Athlete (background and feat) and you will have the Ultimate Tilt Centaur. I took Charger with us build, and he could charge 30’, deal his racial attacks and feat ability, knock the target back 15’, teleport back 15’, then charge again.

    I'd love to see the whip optimised in a build. It's not used very often because rogue doesn't get proficiency with it and it's overshadowed by polearms, but after watching castlevania, it's such a badass weapon with a lot of cool factor, just the damage and overall usefulness seems bogged down by its stats (d4 damage which is pretty bad, and being a martial weapon)

    All of your duo-character builds are awesome, and this is no exception! I love the idea that both of these characters could function efficiently as trackers or stalkers by themselves, on top of providing all these benefits when combining their very different fighting styles.
    I'm sure it would massively change feat selections and damage numbers overall, but I wonder how having a ranged Rogue with sharpshooter and a Barbarian that takes levels in Battle Master as opposed to Cavalier would work instead? You'd be adopting a different playstyle than sticking together in the front line, but Commanding Strike and Goading Strike would be really interesting alternatives to the Sentinel feat and Cavalier taunt, respectively.

    Love this build, have a few things that could be changed and still work well.
    Coyote could be a Centaur, then Wolf could be a small creature and multiclass into Cavalier Fighter earlier to give disadvantage on attack rolls against the centaur. It would also give the wolf some interesting reactions at 10th level in fighter. As a small creature you won't be able to use heavy weapons, I would recommend the whip once you get high enough level to have "Hold the line". Dueling fighting style. Brainy and the Beast isn't available as a write up yet; neither is the Ying-Yang team.
    Are you going to select wolf as your totem at every level? This isn't required.
    Actually, you could take something other than Arcane Trickster if it makes a better build for what you are trying to achieve.
    Flamming Sphere is 5' in diameter, so only one square.
    If your campaign is more outdoors based, Mold Earth can be an amazing choice. Amongst other things, if you carry a number of large wicker baskets (in a portable hole or a cart), you can quickly make a defensive position. Place a 5x5x5 basket next to the 5x5x5 square you intend to move, then move the earth into the basket. You now have a wall that is up to 5 feet high in front of a five foot hole. Repeat as needed. You can make the baskets 2" smaller in width and depth than the one before it so that they can nest inside of each other. You have made a gabion fortified position (see Wikipedia). Note that the earth doesn't have to climb over the lip, it can filter through the gabs in the wickerwork like magic.
    Okay, why are we switching from the two short swords to the single rapier? I get the fact that it will free a hand for spell casting, but that is 1d6+1d8+1d6 vs 2d8. equally important is the fact that you are much less likely to miss with two attacks than with only one, losing out on your sneak attack.
    How about a medium sized barbarian riding a worg?
    Elk would give the party an amazing overland speed.
    Another fun build that I could see me taking, although I don't think I would take more than 2 levels of fighter. I am a sucker for warlocks so I would probably take that build first.

  • @TheRobversion1

    I think the duo builds dont gain as much traction is because most people generally craft their backstories for themselves. Having to craft backstories for 2 builds is fine but the question always is, is your partner amenable to it?
    for me, its a personal taste to build a "self-sufficient" multiclass. The duo builds kind of minimizes the multiclassing fun as you get what you lack for your primary tactics from your ally instead of multiclassing.
    Anyway glad that you got your 1st sponsor! I am definitely underwhelmed with the druids in 5e. The book you showed looks nice.

    I haven't seen anyone mention this, so here it goes: If you went with small for the Wolf's size you wouldn't be able to wield a glaive or halbert, nor benefit from GWM. Well, you could... but they both count as heavy weapons thus giving you disadvantage on attack rolls, or losing advantage when attacking recklessly.

    46:25 A little correction: It's, like you said, "A 5-foot-diameter" sphere, not 5-foot RADIUS. So it's size it's 5 ft, not 10. And it damages (potentially) any creature that end its turn WITHIN 5 feet of the sphere.

    I doubt that dropping booming blade for one more attack with spirit shroud is useful: booming blade is 3d8 at level 17, potentially 7d8. A second hand attack is mostly equal to the additional damage if you have spirit shroud on (1d8+1d6+5, 13), but there are several issues. 1) you are wasting your bonus action. You can use that bonus action to disengage and fish for the additional 4d8, or for many other strategic benefits. 2) if you ever find a magic weapon in your campaign, the second attack is not magic.
    You would need an holistic approach, but for sure I would not use our precious third level slot to get that second attack, as they are mostly equal options.
    The main advantage of the two weapon fighting is the higher chance of getting at least one attack in, for sneak attack. In that case, I think there would be a threshold AC for which it is convenient to shift to two weapons.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 роки тому +1

      I actually did do the math for both. Spirit Shroud + a BA attack comes out ever so slightly higher, damage-wise, than Booming Blade + Upcast Flaming Sphere BA (about 3-10 more DPR, depending on enemy AC and Dex Save). Of course, you could simply forego using your BA for damage at all if you wanted, though with this build I wouldn't recommend moving away to try and get them to follow you, since the idea is to stay close to your Wolf so you can get both advantage and also a reaction attack if/when they attack the wolf. Also, if you ever find one magic weapon, I'm not sure why we can't assume that you'd find two. I typically end up with a magic "off hand" weapon as well as "main hand" when I play a duel wielder in game with not a lot of delay in between. And yes, as you mention, more chances to sneak attack are important, as well as landing a critical hit, which happens with some regularity with advantage and Elven Accuracy.

    I love the theme of this idea with the wolf being a little spiritual but mostly physical and gruff while the coyote is more silly; especially if the wolf does take a smaller race like gnome, which would make me want to take a large race like firbolg instead of elf for the coyote.

    This Reminds me of when a DM did a fun game let us go nuts... My friend played a Goblin Cavalier, I played a Lizardfolk Druid with some talking he could mount me if I was in a feasible mounting form. There was some really fun stuff, I had taken sentinel he would mark the target "While it is within 5 feet of you, a creature marked by you has disadvantage on any attack roll that doesn’t target you" soft taunting forcing him to be targeted. The goblin gets Adv through this and I would play an animal that had pact tactics and when they attacked him I got sent attack. Was a great set up. Maybe you can look in to optimizing a duo setup like that.

    I have a couple of questions about some things that have come up in a few of your optimized build videos.
    The main one is the Polearm Master bonus action attack.
    You sometimes mention that when you attack with Polearm Master against an enemy with only a 5 foot melee range you can attack from 10 feet away, walk 5 feet back, and then take an attack of opportunity if the enemy you attacked walks forward into your range.
    The issue I see with this is to do with your bonus action attack.
    Though the Polearm Master feat description does not specify the range of the bonus action attack, I discoverd on D&D Beyond that it shows this attack to have a range of 5 feet rather than 10. This makes logical sense because to attack with the butt of your polearm at the same 10 feet would mean that the character is completely reversing their grip on the weapon and then making the same attack with the same effort and motion they were before but with the wrong end of the weapon. The idea of attacking with the butt end of the polearm is that you get close and give your enemy a quick additional wack with the end that you're holding.
    This would mean, if you don't want your enemy to get an opportunity attack against you, you have to chose between making the bonus action attack or possibly getting the attack of opportunity, not both.
    Is there anything I'm misunderstanding about this?
    The second question is about the Message cantrip for Rogues.
    The spell components for message include somatic, material, and, most importantly, Verbal. This means, from what I can tell, that the rogue would have to speak in order to cast the spell before they are able to communicate silently. The casting of the spell would reveal their location regardless of the fact that the message would be silent.
    This leads me to believe that it is best for at least one other party member to take the Message cantrip in order to keep in touch with the party's infiltrator/scout. This way the character, for example, outside of a building would be free to speak the verbal components of the spell to allow for the scout/infiltrator to inform the rest of the party.
    Is there anything I'm misunderstanding here?

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 роки тому +1

      Great questions.
      #1 - Honestly, I'd say this is more an issue with dndbeyond. We're specifically told that when a weapon has the reach property: "This weapon adds 5 feet to your reach when you attack with it, as well as when determining your reach for opportunity attacks with it." Nowhere are we told that this changes if we attack with a different part of the weapon. PAM never specifically tells us that the bonus action attack we get is *not* made with reach, so I'd say there's no reason, RAW, to assume that we only get a 5' range on that attack - unless your DM rules otherwise, obviously.
      #2 - I've always assumed that we could whisper the Verbal component here, making essentially impossible for an enemy to hear (depending on how far away they were and how good their hearing, I suppose) - as per this tweet by JC: twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/651514845834014720 - obviously it would be up to your DM so definitely something I should mention going forward :).

    • @flop22222
      @flop22222 3 роки тому

      @@DnDDeepDive Yeah, I get that RAW it doesn't specify that the range is reduced for the PAM bonus action attack but from a logical standpoint the way D&D Beyond shows it makes a lot more sense.
      I personally think that the verbal components of spells should be fairly loud and audible to add more value to spells that don't require that component and to the Subtle Spell Meta Magic option. It could be considered that verbal components that are too quiet don't take effect and don't meet the requirement of the spell.

    I found you after your team-up with Treantmonk, and you've quickly become my favorite channel. Two things:
    1) I've watched about a dozen of your videos and the curiosity is killing me. Why do you count/limit your cards? Is it a youtube thing, or do you just have a bad tendency to litter your videos with links? 😄
    2) Question/Challenge: What do you think the worst subclass in the game is, and (possible video suggestion) how would you optimize a build that had to take a minimum of 10 levels in it?

I already have a character for the one shot, a bard opera singer, but for the next campaing I teamed up with my best friend and we will try this Wolf and Coyote build. We based the concept of the duo on this artwork: www.artstation.com/artwork/Z8rm , he is going to be the human and I will play with the little half-elven girl. Wolf would make a decent grappler character as well. Typically you would need to retrain the target you're grappling (Grappler Feat) in order to generate Advantage against them. But if you're wolf, you can just grapple as many people as you want. I would go with Simic Hybrid (DM permitting), and use a feat to pick up either Athletics Expertise, OR A fighting Style, and pick up the other with a multiclass dip.

    Hey, mate. Great video! I was full on going with a Zealot, but you made an excellent case for the Wolf Totem. Apart from the rogue, my party has a druid and a wizard, so basically, the pack tactics would be exclusively to benefit the rogue. Is it enough to justify picking wolf over Zealot? Is the wolf level 3 ability for just one other melee character viable? (the druid could do some summons in the future, but not counting on it).
    Cheers!
