I don't mind doing gravel cleanings--if needed--but as the area gets larger, the more of a pain it becomes with conventional tools. Fortunately, I conceived a solution that saves time AND does the job more thoroughly:
      Parts/supplies needed:
      2-ltr. soda bottle (thoroughly rinsed)
      1-1/2"-dia. vacuum cleaner extension tube
A compact, low-power wet/dry shop vac with 5-gal. capacity, min. (Bucket Head model & Homer Bucket from Home Depot recommended)
A tube of waterproof silicone sealant (Aquarium sealant will do)
Strainer insert from inexpensive gravel vacuum
      Tools needed:
      A utility knife
1/4" drill bit & suitable drill
Attach shop-vac hose into the extension tube, marking on tube or hose end to where overlap of one to the other ends when fitted tightly. Mark & drill a 1/4" hole in tube approximately 1/2-1" below it.
Using utility knife, cut & remove safety-seal ring from the neck of the plastic bottle, then cut & remove "crown" (The top part that goes from widest to narrowest part of bottle) of the bottle.
Apply 1/8-14" beam of silicone sealant to rim of gravel vac strainer, and afix it to the inside of the bottle crown facing same way as found in source.
Insert threaded part of the bottle crown into end of vacuum extension tube furthest from drilled hole, and lay a 1/8-1/4" bead of silicone sealant between where the two pieces meet. Allow all silicone sealant to cure 24-72-hours before use.
      Usage:
Attach assembly to shop-vac hose. With bottle crown placed in water, turn-on shop-vac while leaving drilled hole in extension tube uncovered. You will know if the shop-vac employed is too powerful if it immediately draws water from the tank. If so, switch-off the shop-vac and either enlarge hole in extension tube or use less-powerful shop-vac.
If no water in drawn immediately, hold assembly by extension tube, inserting bottom edge of bottle crown into the substrate and using either thumb or finger over drilled hole to control suction by covering the drilled hole to start, and uncovering to stop, while watching for movement of detritus through visible area of bottle crown. When detritus is seen moving clear of bottle crown, stop suction and move assemble to another area to try cleaning. If no movement is seen, either try inserting the bottom edge of the bottle crown deeper into substrate for results, or uncover drilled hole to stop suction and moving assembly to new area to try.
If canister/bucket of vacuum becomes full, possibly to point water begins to be discharged via vacuum's outlet port, immediately shut-down the shop-vac and empty the canister before continuing use. (DUH!)

The two of you are darling. And Jason is such a gentle giant full of so much wisdom and love it’s so nice to see. What a wonderful metaphor for life: you’re going to hear all kinds of conflicting opinions about minor things like appearances and what matters most is doing what you love and enjoy and are comfortable with. Great advice! Happy Monday 💕💕💕

I use a turkey baster too ..... I put the end of it into the end of my syphon hose so instead of sucking on the hose to start the flow I just squeeze the turkey baster, then remove it from the hose when the flow starts.

I have a long bulb syringe for feeding coral. The rigid part fits perfectly into my smaller hose and allows a great deal of cleaning, giving time to clean a lot. I have sand substrate so this works really well.

Best place for those turkey basters is Walmart. Walmart has clear ones with black tops and they come with a cleaning brush inside for $2 or $3 and the brush also works for cleaning the feeding tubing of a HOB filter so win/win

I use a turkey baster on mine. Squeeze bulb, insert other end in water and as you release the bulb slowly, you can suck up all the debris easily. Taking out the baster from the water, hold your finger on the bottom part as you get close to the top of the tank water and squeeze out the dirty water into your potted plants or watering can.

My tip. I got some metal straws from WalMart and attached some latex aquarium tubing and I use it for mini-siphon. Works well, however it does require hand in water. No worries, I always wash hands thoroughly in warm soap and water after each cleaning sech. I like the mini because it's more precise and it doesn't drain out as much water. I don't worry about sucking up sand. After I'm done I ... pan for gold ... by adding a little water to measuring cup_ which I use in conjunction with the mini_ swirl around, and pour poop and/or detritus down the drain or on houseplants ... your call.

LMAO! I Googled "Hydra" the other day and your video from 2017 came up. You did look slightly younger with less facial hair, but I was more taken aback by the change in your muscle mass from then to now. Looks like your mass matured and you leaned out. Same thing happened when my partner and I left law enforcement to go back to school. Though I left the full beard growing to him to cover up his baby face and the fact our necks are no longer the same circumference as our heads. LOL! You guys crack me up! Thanks for another informative video. I am immediately going to try the pipette trick in one of my heavily planted nano tanks. That's a game changer.

Guys, I use a turkey baster as a blower. Let's say you have discovered a dead fish that had gone into hiding prior to dying. I fill the baster with water. Then I put the turkey baster near the fish, then squeeze the rubber bulb which produces a force of water to move or dislodge the fish and propel him to a place where I can easily remove him with a net. You spared yourself having to move rocks or plants.

For bigger tanks with sand I use a plastic water bottle cut roughly in half with small-medium powerhead mounted to the screw on lid and a small piece of fine sponge first then poly fill the powerhead doesn't suck in the Polly fill ,found this works well catching all the stuff floating above the sand and you don't have worry about how much water you remove, then do your water change

I have quite a few bare bottom fry tanks, guppy and angel fish new born's. I attach air line hose to a rigid air lift tube (such as used inside the tubes for UGF's) and siphon fish waste and excess food every two days. Makes it easier to avoid sucking the fry out and they get a 10% water change every two days.

Actually I use an airline tube for vacuuming my small snail tank and manually remove poop on the sand substrate of my Goldfish tank and luckily I just got a mouthful of tank water but if poop goes in too I'll probably stop doing that if it happens. I use it since my snail tank is small I don't want to drain the water fast with a normal vacuum and my gf tank was on the floor so when using normal vacuum the water isn't draining because it's not higher than my bucket so I manually scoop the water and use airline tube for that. Anyway those are great ideas for a diy projects.
