    As a sufferer of mental illness I'm finding Stephen's discussion of the experience of mental health issues very good. It is real. The blackness that falls down is without the hope of finding a light switch. It's debilitating, immobilising and utterly dreadful because it is so real, and it's something no-one but yourself can feel. If you have never experienced depression it's impossible to create it or understand it. And yes, a sufferer without acceptance and support does lose everything until self-harm and eventually suicide is the only way out. If you don't get the 'relief' of mania - and I say that advisedly because I don't have that experience and can't know what it's like - it's a living nightmare. Thank you Stephen for throwing out a light.

    • @sarahdrenth1540
      @sarahdrenth1540 7 років тому +5

      Post script: I am however disappointed that Stephen has chosen to distinguish bipolar disorder from personality disorders, suggesting that somehow the latter is a reflection of who the sufferer is as a person and therefore to my mind arguing that it is their fault. I have BPD and believe me when I attest that it is a devastating condition, with unremitting periods of depression not alleviated by mania. All mental health issues are serious and often life threatening. A sufferer should never be somehow attributed with blame for it. BPD results from a combination of genetic disposition and early environment/experiences. Medication is pretty ineffective for a personality disorder because it involves a disorder of one's thinking which often leads to severe depression and anxiety.

      I don't believe that my acceptance and support would have saved my sister. It makes me sad to think about because I loved her but every contact for years was painful. I will always wish that I had thought of a way to be still supportive.

    A Master of Language and Articulation, Fry is mesmerising! You can hear his passion from the tonal changes, Thespian 101 I suppose. And a Rockstar, when talking about the next guest, ex conservative leader, "if he is going to be drinking the same water, then I'm going to have to piss in this bottle!" Rock On Stephen! Long Live Enlightenment!

    One of my living heroes!!!! Impossible to listen to him and not remain under the weather. I've never bothered to query him on one question: I did my doctorate which involved a lot of semiotics, the premise of which is that language is a closed system and the referent, that reality out there, is excluded by the way we use language. I long to ask Stephen Fry if he might agree that art, whether produced by language itself, or the visual arts etc. perhaps exists precisely to reach that unreachable: the thing in itself, or possibly its apotheosis.
    So glad this man is in the world.

I really appreciate his candid talk around this subject it helps to know someone as intelligent and successful as Stephen has suffered (suffers) and risen above this very debilitating condition He gives me hope. The numbers in the self called Developed world are higher than many called under developed world. Some of the reasons for this can be put in the way life is perceived, how we liberate pressure, stress, and how we deal with the purpose in life. Developed world has focused in "believing" the MIND is all, the most important, and with thousands of questions that most generally are in a negative mode. The pressure of becoming someone, of competition rather than collaboration, the goals and objectives that may not be attained ever.

    I am the unlikely one person in my current universe who is not bipolar; I think I'm accepted because I speak rather quickly and we all agree that Stephen Fry is an international treasure. I'm very interested in driven creative people, some of whom succeed and some of whom don't. The list ... JK Rowlings, Tom Petty; I'll stop there for the benefit of brevity. Neither of these people may be of interest to Mr. Fry; but they do have this in common with him. They'd go mad without their words, and/or music. The word enthusiasm applies to Stephen Fry, and others ... inhabited by a god. The god of wisdom, and wit.

      My Dad was a very wise man, he never sought to stifle my curiosity about life, and thirst for knowledge.
      We would, with the aid of the “Google “ of the day, the Encyclopedia Británica learn a cornucopia of knowledge.

    Pleased to hear he is no longer 'self-medicating. and is now on appropriate medication. Although, Olanzapine is known to cause serious weight gain, in some. I watched the programme he talked of and the button option and if it was offered. He interviewed a number of people and then he stated he did not take medication, which sent quite a few people into believing he was just jumping on the gravy train, of back then, and using others for the focus of his supposed mental illness. I am pleased the focus is now on him and that he is going down the well travelled route towards better quality of life with a sever and enduring mental illness. Good luck to him,. a very colourful character the way it was left when some of the pieces were taken away.
