I have huge respect for Stephen. Always enjoy his talks and views on things. On the other hand, whenever I see Cathy Newman I am reminded of that interview with Jordan Peterson and all those attempted 'gotcha' moments that didn't exactly go to plan.
My thought exactly. At the time it Jordan Peterson was (IMHO) trying to stick to carefully thought out positions, and refusing to take the bait. Newman was not interested in exploring his views accurately. These days, for whatever reason, he's not really the same.
Yes I totally agree. Stephen Fry is a legend and I totally admire his intelligence and wit and the fact that he seems a thoroughly nice guy. It's very illuminating how Cathy Newman is treating Stephen ( the correct way ) whilst she had her teeth bared and her claws out for Jordan Peterson. I appreciate how candid Stephen can be, sharing his experience from a relatively dramatic accident, making my recuperation from a relatively everyday repair of my limited umbilical hernia just 3 weeks ago a fairly trivial event. Even so, it calms me down to hear others describe their experience when recuperating from any recent accidental damage or medical event, to remind me that my situation is nothing special compared to what others experience. Furthermore, it is a pleasure hearing Fry share stories and useful information from his point of view. Thank you again and best wishes for the holidays.
I get so annoyed with the fear of Oxycontin after surgery especially in older populations, we aren't addicts, we have had surgeries and are in pain, it is totally different. Nurse here, I encourage my patients to take their medication so they can participate in their rehab. And all of them are just on plain Tylenol by the time they leave us.
My (not a medical professional) observation of this is that Oxy is a great thing when it has "something to do" i.e. has severe pain to work on and push against. When it is used in this context the body doesn't have the capacity(?) inclination(?) to addiction. The trick, as pain diminishes, is when to ween off of it and transition to Tylenol or some-such. The horrors here in the US were due to severe over prescription for pain for which it was not warranted.
I just thought it weird for Fry to use the American brand name when the NHS refers to the type of pain reliever it is as Oxycodone. Of course, the controversial marketing exploitation etc by the Sacklers is perhaps just as much a consideration for some.
@@SierraNovemberKilo It’s my understanding that OxyContin is the extended-release version & Oxycodone is the instant release version of the same medication. I’ve lived in both the USA & the UK & been prescribed Oxycodone in both countries. (I have only had a prescription for OxyContin in the USA. It didn’t work week with my digestive system (like a lot of patients) so I had no need to try it in Britain but I’m pretty sure that my explanation is right. 😊
Strong pain killers like Oxycodone are life savers for many patients. In studies, genuine pain patients (including long term, chronic pain patients) are highly unlikely statistically to suffer addiction. (Addiction being VERY different to tolerance) Since the start of the, “War on prescription drugs” in the USA, the experts have been warning that “Genuine chronic pain patients could become the collateral damage in the war on prescription drugs”…That warning has been widely ignored in my experience! In studies a huge percentage of doctors admit to under prescribing or NOT prescribing opioids at all since the government’s ’recommendations’.
When we transition to a post-labor economy, I see happiness as being the measure of wealth, as it should be now honestly. Happiness comes from the way that we choose to live our lives, rather than from some external source like money. The best pursuit that we can choose in a post-labor economy is to develop ways of living that maximize the happiness of yourself and those around you.
Stephen Fry the very best of the very best. Can listen to him for hours about anything. His eloquence and knowledge is unparalleled. A true ,rare renaissance man. His compassion, kindness, and humility are some of his greatest and important traits.
As anyone who remembers the show 'Tomorrow's World' will know, it's impossible to predict the future. Whatever people think about AI now, it's almost certainly going to morph into something that nobody ever expected, and it will probably be a combination of both good and bad.

the real problem with AI, where it is accessible on the web, is that it uses the web as its source. And people use web AI to produce their output that will appear on the web. Anyone who knows a scintilla of how systems react will label that as "positive feedback". Scientific research on the very situation call the result "model collapse" (such AI is a "Large Language Model"). It is not as if the "web" is even that reliable. But it won't stop it being marketed, and used. It will create echo chambers, just like anti-social media has.

"Nation states are preposterous" This logic could also be applied to the concept of the "home" This makes it easy to argue that the concept of private property is just another artificial creation. Some would regard this as humans reaching a sort of Star Trek utopian level. The individual no longer focuses on the self, but always strives to do what is best for the greater good for all. Which seems to lead to the conclusion "you will own nothing and be happy". Humans are going to have to decide whether they regard this as being progress. Or not.

It’s funny, I recall this bloke lecturing people on how they should keep their personal suffering to themselves (aches and pains especially) and try to use the word ‘I’ as little as possible in conversation; and almost any time I see him he is moaning about some injury or setback that has befallen himself and using the word ‘I’ quite a bit. I suppose he is just not fond of his own advise. The wise are as foolish as anyone else, Cicero once said. If only my credulity would make me as wise.

I smashed 44 bones after being hit by a 4x4 while parked in a lay-by in my camper and a 4x4 smashed into me at 90mph then I was thrown from my wreckage onto the dual carriageway then run over by a mini bus, I had a shattered pelvis open book feature, class 4, a broken neck and several smashed vertabre, a fractured skull, a severe TBI that put me in a coma for 2 weeks, I severed an artery and broke all of my ribs as well as injuring my lungs. When I woke from my coma, they told me I would be in hospital for 2 yrs, I discharged myself after 16 weeks, and refused all pharmaceutical intervention and went to what I knew, Nutrition and exercise. Even after major operations I refused morphine clickers and all painkillers. The mind is far more powerful than any petrochemical based medicine. We are natural and nature really does provide all, you just have to learn how to access it.

I also loved Jeopardy from its early days, used to get a "stomach ache" to stay home from school til it was over at about 10am! And I was in elementary school. I've quit watching since Mayim Bialik left; Jennings makes me itch. Wish I could watch Fry host, I'm sure he will be delightful❣️He is amazingly knowledgeable about such a wide array of things, and I can't think of Anything he's ever posited that I've disagreed with. I've been worried about his fall from the stage, and it was much worse than I saw reported, but I'm grateful he's recovering so well. I'm 66 and I have two collapsed discs in my spine and dread getting surgery for them, as well as numerous bone spurs and pain in my right hip. My left hip has already been replaced. Without morphine, I would be unable to take care of myself. By the way, I live in Taiwan, where medications are covered by the very excellent National Health Insurance system. If I still lived in the USA, I would be forced to resort to street drugs.
This is the first time of seeing Stephen Fry being Stephen Fry’. Clearly, a very well read and educated man and, vey easy to listen to. Apart from that nebulous hint of femininity, which wafts through on and off and which slightly throws me, he brings comfort that there is yet hope for the human race, especially with such erudite individuals as he helping us to keep striving to win back proper control of our country.
Opioids are life savers when taken as prescribed by an expert! They stop having the ‘drugged-up’ feeling within a week (at most in my experience!) & after that you feel ‘normal’ but with a LOT less pain. (The “Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medication will affect you” part of the warnings in the package) With short term or chronic pain it’s vital that you remember, “There’s no such thing as a magic pill!”. Stephen Fry is correct. Pain killers give you the ability to do more like physical therapy exercises! You need to find the right blend of treatments that work for you!
I was taking oxycontin and oxynorm frequently for many years, because of repeated episodes of kidney problems (swelling up, like with kidney stones). The only times i ever felt any "drugged up effect" was when i took them while i wasn't in pain, but doing things which had a very high probability of triggering the problem. I once needed to replace them, because they were a year past their use before date, yet some specialists still thought i wanted them because i was a drug addict.
I would hazard a guess that the benefits of AI will accrue to the wealthiest members of society and the people who are left jobless can simply be left to starve and die. What could possibly go wrong?

Part of the promise of AI is that it may enable the creation of beneficial services that would be impractical or even impossible to create manually. For example, it could make geographic information accessible and useful to blind pedestrians. Alternatively, it could transcribe and/or explain the "slides" presented in technical talks. Yesterday, the New York Times started sueing Microsoft and Open AI. The problem with AI is it does too litle consuming a huge amount of energy and processing power. A strange thing about the Large Language Model as an attempt to mimic the human brain is that language comes as an after thought in the thinking process. Prof. Michael Gazaniga's (and others) work shows that language creates a reasoning for a decision or conclusion that was reached through non-linguistic processes.
Hi Stephen. I'm now 62. I grew up being told that when man was able to utilize robots, our lives would become easier. They neglected to say that the robots are paid for by the public and only the wealthy gain the advances. Can you please speak to that?
Yes, yes, yes, to Stephen's opening words (and from 14 mins 30). I have lived in Asia and have also worked with people who grew up in Soviet Russia or the former East Germany. I have experienced the difference in ethics and values between these populations and "the liberal West". Not everywhere in Asia or the East, not with everyone who originates from there, of course, but there is a majority difference between the nations and cultures. As long as we admit and respect that, and keep our own values within our own borders, there will be no war.

I generally find him to be a reasonable person but upon listening to Stephen on some of the topics he mentions, I did not realise how narrow-minded he is on some topics, i.e. moral frameworks, hardwiring particular ideals into AI, Musk etc. Additionally, his recent rant (at Christmas) on his new-found identity, or not, as a being Jewish and its use as a foundation to remind us all how anti-Semitic Britain really is was also somewhat worrying.

His ‘bit part’ in Black Adder as you say was not a bit part, it was part of a brilliant ensemble cast. And his involvement in QI made it the program it is. Have you seen his documentary on bipolar? As far as AI is concerned the closed captions on this video are absolutely appalling. Whoever wrote the algorithm needed to have established a strict rule about literal transcription - so many UM's and AH's peppered throughout makes reading the dialogue tedious and my patience wears thin having to navigate that chaff.

Something that should be stressed about painkillers is that they are not addictive if used for pain medication. If they are solely used to manage pain, there is no 'high' to get addicted to. This is explicitly stated by NICE. The reason oxy ended up being so bad is that Perdue actively encouraged over prescription, the provision of greater levels than was needed so they could 'move more product'. I have taken opioids, including oxy for years, I have no trouble stopping when I need to or when my pain reduces. Pain medication gets a lot of bad press, the positive sides should be given equal weight.
In the US, for your type of injury my Dr told me that the DEA would only alow her to prescribe five Tylenol codine and take Ibuprophen when that runs out. The US Government doesn't care how much pain your in only that you don't become addicted.
I agree my muscles was in serve pain...with hypothyroid, was put on anti -depression tablets. Highly against it at 66, l took it up in two days pain gone. But I asked to be taken off it..l feel now...l only get muscle pain when its cold....❤

I can't help thinking of others pain when I'm in paint, fell out of a tree, (one I had planted 25 years earlier) Broke my femur,lucky to be alive , morphine and too much ketamin leading to hallucinatory nightmares. I empathize with bone breaking in kids under GAZAN rubble. Not Stephen Fry apparently...maybe he was high in his prescribed drugs . He's right about us being gatherer hunters forever and only Jonny come lately farmers, Check out the SAN PEOPLES...the longest civilisation by far. They hold much wisdom we lost...like how to prevent a leader or a ruling elite .... That's priceless knowledge in action over 260,000 years !!! Also peace accords with specific local prides of lions
His central premise regarding what comes after overlooks British history. A class of human beings that doesn’t have to work is a nobility. So, what do nobles do with their time? I would offer the Plantagenet Dynasty and the houses of York and Lancaster as illustrations.
Beloved Stephen Fry, one thing that I would say is that we used to be terrified by the threat of tractors to farmers etc (I think it is Warren Buffet's example). There are a lot of vocations that are lost for good and that is it I guess - for good (!!!) the world is not worse off because there are no vocations like spinners or amourers around any more.
If they can clone the voices of celebreties etc. then nobody will be able to know if it is the people they know who are saying things or is it someone else who has contrived their words. If truthful people can be used to lie then where will truth be?
This topic is immensely important and I appreciate Stephen's perspective, however I feel the same way about this conversation that I do about every other conversation on the topic. That is, that the heart of the issue is illusive and therefore sidestepped entirely. When Stephen is confronted by the question of what will happen when AI take control of most tasks, humans have UBI and their livelihoods secured, what will humans do, what will it mean to be human in an area of purposelessness? He hand-waves and says basically that he doesn't know what humanity will do with itself. That's the entire question of the matter! Stephen, or any others publicly engaged in this topic, put your ideas on the line, throw a concept for humanity 2.0 on the table. Let's talk about that as it's a truly urgent matter. For me, I believe that boredom will become the defining sickness of the second half of the 21st century. A deep, profound boredom that will lead many to self-ruin. Sadly, I don't see a lot of room for optimism (even techno-utopians don't understand the point of their utopia). Maybe the best case for optimism is that humanity will merge with this technology and we will no longer be "human".

He really is so measured in his opinions. Many, if not most people would take a hard position on painkillers and never veer from the original stance.

As anyone who remembers the show 'Tomorrow's World' will know, it's impossible to predict the future. Whatever people think about AI now, it's almost certainly going to morph into something that nobody ever expected, and it will probably be a combination of both good and bad.

the real problem with AI, where it is accessible on the web, is that it uses the web as its source. And people use web AI to produce their output that will appear on the web. Anyone who knows a scintilla of how systems react will label that as "positive feedback". Scientific research on the very situation call the result "model collapse" (such AI is a "Large Language Model"). It is not as if the "web" is even that reliable. But it won't stop it being marketed, and used. It will create echo chambers, just like anti-social media has.
We can't realize the affect technology will have on work. I once wrote a 2k string of code that put 8 people out of work without even meaning to.

It’s funny, I recall this bloke lecturing people on how they should keep their personal suffering to themselves (aches and pains especially) and try to use the word ‘I’ as little as possible in conversation; and almost any time I see him he is moaning about some injury or setback that has befallen himself and using the word ‘I’ quite a bit. I smashed 44 bones after being hit by a 4x4 while parked in a lay-by in my camper and a 4x4 smashed into me at 90mph then I was thrown from my wreckage onto the dual carriageway then run over by a mini bus, I had a shattered pelvis open book feature, class 4, a broken neck and several smashed vertabre, a fractured skull, a severe TBI that put me in a coma for 2 weeks, I severed an artery and broke all of my ribs as well as injuring my lungs. When I woke from my coma, they told me I would be in hospital for 2 yrs, I discharged myself after 16 weeks, and refused all pharmaceutical intervention and went to what I knew, Nutrition and exercise.
Even after major operations I refused morphine clickers and all painkillers.
The mind is far more powerful than any petrochemical based medicine.
We are natural and nature really does provide all, you just have to learn how to access it.

I've adored Stephen Fry since A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and Black Adder, and the more I see of him and learn about him, the more I love and respect him.
I also loved Jeopardy from its early days, used to get a "stomach ache" to stay home from school til it was over at about 10am! And I was in elementary school. I've quit watching since Mayim Bialik left; Jennings makes me itch. Wish I could watch Fry host, I'm sure he will be delightful❣️He is amazingly knowledgeable about such a wide array of things, and I can't think of Anything he's ever posited that I've disagreed with.
I've been worried about his fall from the stage, and it was much worse than I saw reported, but I'm grateful he's recovering so well.

When you are in real pain you do not get hi on the drugs.
I'm 66 and I have two collapsed discs in my spine and dread getting surgery for them, as well as numerous bone spurs and pain in my right hip. My left hip has already been replaced. Without morphine, I would be unable to take care of myself. By the way, I live in Taiwan, where medications are covered by the very excellent National Health Insurance system. If I still lived in the USA, I would be forced to resort to street drugs.
Yeah for that Kaiser would give you minor pain meds for a WEEK. Then you would be in agony.
This is the first time of seeing Stephen Fry being Stephen Fry’. Clearly, a very well read and educated man and, vey easy to listen to. Opioids are life savers when taken as prescribed by an expert! They stop having the ‘drugged-up’ feeling within a week (at most in my experience!) & after that you feel ‘normal’ but with a LOT less pain. (The “Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medication will affect you” part of the warnings in the package)
With short term or chronic pain it’s vital that you remember, “There’s no such thing as a magic pill!”. Stephen Fry is correct. Pain killers give you the ability to do more like physical therapy exercises! You need to find the right blend of treatments that work for you!

I was taking oxycontin and oxynorm frequently for many years, because of repeated episodes of kidney problems (swelling up, like with kidney stones). The only times i ever felt any "drugged up effect" was when i took them while i wasn't in pain, but doing things which had a very high probability of triggering the problem.
I once needed to replace them, because they were a year past their use before date, yet some specialists still thought i wanted them because i was a drug addict.
I would hazard a guess that the benefits of AI will accrue to the wealthiest members of society and the people who are left jobless can simply be left to starve and die. What could possibly go wrong?

Yesterday, the New York Times started sueing Microsoft and Open AI. The problem with AI is it does too litle consuming a huge amount of energy and processing power.
A strange thing about the Large Language Model as an attempt to mimic the human brain is that language comes as an after thought in the thinking process. Prof. Michael Gazaniga's (and others) work shows that language creates a reasoning for a decision or conclusion that was reached through non-linguistic processes.
Listening to him is delightful.
The problem with AI is it will reveal the truth about a certain group of people.

Yes, yes, yes, to Stephen's opening words (and from 14 mins 30). I have lived in Asia and have also worked with people who grew up in Soviet Russia or the former East Germany. I have experienced the difference in ethics and values between these populations and "the liberal West". Not everywhere in Asia or the East, not with everyone who originates from there, of course, but there is a majority difference between the nations and cultures. As long as we admit and respect that, and keep our own values within our own borders, there will be no war.

I generally find him to be a reasonable person but upon listening to Stephen on some of the topics he mentions, I did not realise how narrow-minded he is on some topics, i.e. moral frameworks, hardwiring particular ideals into AI, Musk etc. Additionally, his recent rant (at Christmas) on his new-found identity, or not, as a being Jewish and its use as a foundation to remind us all how anti-Semitic Britain really is was also somewhat worrying.

As far as AI is concerned the closed captions on this video are absolutely appalling. Whoever wrote the algorithm needed to have established a strict rule about literal transcription - so many UM's and AH's peppered throughout makes reading the dialogue tedious and my patience wears thin having to navigate that chaff.

Something that should be stressed about painkillers is that they are not addictive if used for pain medication. If they are solely used to manage pain, there is no 'high' to get addicted to. This is explicitly stated by NICE.
The reason oxy ended up being so bad is that Perdue actively encouraged over prescription, the provision of greater levels than was needed so they could 'move more product'.
I have taken opioids, including oxy for years, I have no trouble stopping when I need to or when my pain reduces. Pain medication gets a lot of bad press, the positive sides should be given equal weight.
In the US, for your type of injury my Dr told me that the DEA would only alow her to prescribe five Tylenol codine and take Ibuprophen when that runs out. The US Government doesn't care how much pain your in only that you don't become addicted.

Again the conversation drifts into accusing certain politicians of being "populist". I cannot understand how, in a democracy, a position that is "popular" can be frowned upon.. Newman yet again exposes herself as being a supporter of authoritarian government where normal people have to comply to the woke agenda even though it is unpopular and would never stand the test of a democratic vote.

Beloved Stephen Fry, one thing that I would say is that we used to be terrified by the threat of tractors to farmers etc (I think it is Warren Buffet's example). There are a lot of vocations that are lost for good and that is it I guess - for good (!!!) the world is not worse off because there are no vocations like spinners or amourers around any more.
If they can clone the voices of celebreties etc. then nobody will be able to know if it is the people they know who are saying things or is it someone else who has contrived their words. If truthful people can be used to lie then where will truth be?

This topic is immensely important and I appreciate Stephen's perspective, however I feel the same way about this conversation that I do about every other conversation on the topic. That is, that the heart of the issue is illusive and therefore sidestepped entirely. When Stephen is confronted by the question of what will happen when AI take control of most tasks, humans have UBI and their livelihoods secured, what will humans do, what will it mean to be human in an area of purposelessness? He hand-waves and says basically that he doesn't know what humanity will do with itself. That's the entire question of the matter! Stephen, or any others publicly engaged in this topic, put your ideas on the line, throw a concept for humanity 2.0 on the table. Let's talk about that as it's a truly urgent matter.
For me, I believe that boredom will become the defining sickness of the second half of the 21st century. A deep, profound boredom that will lead many to self-ruin. Sadly, I don't see a lot of room for optimism (even techno-utopians don't understand the point of their utopia). Maybe the best case for optimism is that humanity will merge with this technology and we will no longer be "human".
What humanity will do with its free time is less important than what the AI will do with humanity.
