Reminds me of the old ‘Ultra Marines’ game. Glad to see that they are bringing back quick/simple/kid-friendly lineup. Will definitely be picking this and Blitz Bowl up.
Agreed! I love seeing the more accessible / pure board game stuff coming around. We've been checking out Blitz Bowl this week and will be featuring it soon!
The spawning reminded me of the outbreaks/epidemics in Pandemic. I think that your evaluation of the number of players, it doesn't seem like the kind of game that would be suited to a large group (of course, this could be considered part of the appeal). It does look quick to play and the opposing "AI" is very easy to understand. Another good video.
First, thanks for the kind words! Second, I do agree that this one wouldn't work for a bigger group of me and my gamer friends around here. That said, there's no reason why it couldn't work for other groups or as a very solid introduction to coop games for a new gaming group!
I just bought this, and we've been playing with it as sort of a Deathwatch game. Instead of using its standard rules, we use its activation/spawn system and use the standard 40k combat system, with some modifications.
Great playthrough. I'm glad they use tokens for enemies instead of miniatures, since it keeps the cost down. Things looked tense towards the beginning, but once towards the end it seemed like a cakewalk. The variable abilities, gear, and maps seem like they'd add a lot of replay. It does seem like some playthroughs could end up being super swingy in terms of difficulty.
First off, thanks for the kind words on the playthrough! Second, I think your take on the variability as well as swingy-ness is right on. As I was mentioning towards the end of the game, if those 3 spawns that happened on point 1 happened on 4 or 5, it would have greatly changed the end of that game. I don’t really have a problem with that though. You still have a decent amount of control over the game state and some choices to make even when things are swing super hard or super easy. The time investment is so small (like 30 minutes) that it’s not a big deal to just play another one.
Jonathan Williams thank you! Totally agree with your thoughts on the game too. It’s not some masterful coop game or anything, it’s just simple, quick and fun!
Space Marines: *are called good guys* Me: what the actual fuck are you on? Also, the idea of a blood angel, ultramarine, slamander, space wolf, and imperial fist working together in a full game is weird.
Just picked this up and I appreciate you overview. I have a question: if you're playing with three players, would that mean for the turn activation cards, you'd have 2 for each player, and then 3 Necron cards?
We're using a Canon HF G40 here and for most of our footage. For the audio we use a Zoom H4N mic. I generally record the audio separately with the mic and then sync up the audio between the camera and Zoom tracks. This way we can position the mic wherever works best and not worry about having the have it feed input into the camera. That said if you're looking to film board game video, I'd recommend just using whatever you've got laying around first. Most modern cell phone cameras record good video and audio. Maybe just start with a tripod for your cell phone and then see how it goes before you spend a lot of money. You might find your recording needs are a little different!
Are you supposed to count the tiles where you start as a movement because I watched another video where they counted the board only as movement ( so you don't jump over your teammates as a movement at the start of the game ) we just got the game last week and we were a bit confused on some of the things so were starting again this weekend also I was wondering if you happen to get another spawn card lets says it says spawn on 2 like the first card you got and if the second one also says spawn on 2 where would you put the new monsters in the squares next to the other ones so there would be 5 in that area or what would you do? does it say in the manual how many cards you draw for the gear so you know how that works? cause when we tried it my brother drew eight cards and we all took 2 each do we just draw 8 and we each get to pick one card out of the eight? how does that work? never played a Warhammer game before and this really does seem fun Edit just got my question answered with that 5 spawn gotcha
DarthP00P00 you get overrun with new spawns. Whenever a spawn happens on top of a space marine, they take a wound. If they ever take two wounds, they’re killed. It can happen pretty quickly!
Is there a reason the necron tokens need to be randomly drawn? Cant just takem from a pile? And in another video, it looked like you can only attack when tokens are orthoganlly adjecent to your char, not diagonal. You attacked one that was diagonal (your 1st attack). Are you sure that is allowed? And is there a specific order the marines need to be lined up in on that entry tile for setup?
supercommando440 yes you can shoot diagonally if you have line of sight (which he did). You can line your SMs at the beginning in any order you choose.
@@MitukiYT Since I asked now I already have the game and read the Rulebook (and played 12 games of which 8 single missions and 4 campaigns). You have the diagonal attacks and the range is shown as calculated for diagonal attacks and the melee attack is range 1 so it should be allowed for diagonal melee attacks. The fact of the matter is diagonal melee attacks are NOT mentioned neither as allowed nor as forbidden, which is a huge overlook. I can't imagine how can they not mention it and the more I think why it's not mentioned the more I realize that they don't need to, because melee attacks are just as normal attacks and obviously diagonal attacks are allowed. Why to mention it particularly, indeed.
Folks on some other sites are comparing them to the more recent Deathwatch releases, saying that the limbs are a bit leaner compared to the older slightly chunkier/bulkier model designs, if that makes sense. They seem to look more properly proportioned, and as a result pair up well with the Primaris models visually.
The Necrons don't attack per se, but when they spawn, if the spawn move causes a Necrons counter to occupy the same space as a Space Marine, he is overrun, and takes a wound.
When you're referring to "the game", which game are you talking about? This is a new, standalone board game in the 40k universe. It's not trying to be a replacement for the 40k miniatures game in any way if that is your concern.

Hm, the necrons never acts, they were just spawning.
I’d consider Blitz Bowl if it had a way to play solo

Went out and bought this because of this video, great stuff and thank you!!
I:m going to buy this once I have the money to do so specifically because of this excellently put together video.
Thanks!

Spot on with the quick play time. Comparing it with Space Hulk Death Angel, SMA seems much more up my alley.
David Ko glad to hear it! If you pick it up, I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks just had the shop put this on hold for me. Can't wait to paint those marines too.
Good ol games workshop found a way to sell just 4 marine models and some paper for £50+ 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻 bravo
Just picked this up last night at Target for $19.99.😃
Enjoyed watching you play. Th thanks for the review. I might buy it.
Nicely done. This game looks very simple and streamlined. Very neat little design.
Jonathan Williams thank you! Totally agree with your thoughts on the game too. It’s not some masterful coop game or anything, it’s just simple, quick and fun!
@@boardgamereplay indeed, considering that GW can be very complex, good to see them do something nice and simple.
I instantly subbed. Your review of the game is honest and also informative.
I love this game!

Also, the idea of a blood angel, ultramarine, slamander, space wolf, and imperial fist working together in a full game is weird.
These were the 1st 5 Space Marines that I painted.
I’m not sure if they can be used in the Tabletop game, but if I could, that would be nice.
They could individually. You wouldn't be playing with different chapters in the same army, in 40K proper.
This is diet space hulk
I would have enjoyed hearing you read the story text on the cards.
For $40 this looks awesome!
Very nice ))) Cool art )))
Sir Arkham thanks for watching!
No problem ))) More games - more likes)))

No you always have 4 marines.
What kind of camera and audio are you guys using? I'm curious in how to record board games

Ugh...sold. Man I am just purging money like a Nurgle follower purges snot.
Haha, nicely put :)
So it seems like a simpler single-player Space Crusade, neat!

Edit just got my question answered with that 5 spawn gotcha
Thanks for the review! Bought this for the gaming club at the school I teach at and seeing it played is helpful!
Can you shoot on diagonal?
so the enemies don't shoot back? How do you lose?
DarthP00P00 you get overrun with new spawns. Whenever a spawn happens on top of a space marine, they take a wound. If they ever take two wounds, they’re killed. It can happen pretty quickly!

@@Ben_Mdws Can you melee diagonally?
AGEMO Not that I know

Whats the size difference, if any between those models and the normal tacticals?
All the models are standard GW 28mm models. They're the same size as Space Marine Tactical Squads.
Folks on some other sites are comparing them to the more recent Deathwatch releases, saying that the limbs are a bit leaner compared to the older slightly chunkier/bulkier model designs, if that makes sense. UK Release date?
Last I was told this wasn't going to be sold directly in the UK. I think it's mostly US and Germany :\
Cheers, I had that sinking feeling when the GW site didn't offer any sort of acknowledgement. A shame because it looks like a fun, casual game.
Jason B one year later I have the reply you wanted.... Game are now selling this in the UK.
So the Necrons don’t actually attack you?
foxglos no, they don’t technically attack. Your marines just get wounded being overrun with spawns.
i dont understand when spacemarine risk a wound....
The Necrons don't attack per se, but when they spawn, if the spawn move causes a Necrons counter to occupy the same space as a Space Marine, he is overrun, and takes a wound.
Shitty. They will keep dumbing down the game until it's no longer tactical but just a snakes and ladders game for children
