In this video we have a quick look at 'hot stamping' which is where we apply a maker's mark (or other stamp) to some leather by heating it up rather than applying it to cased leather.
This is a quick method using a heat gun, for industrial application you can get proper machines to do this. Please try not to burn yourselves :)

FINALLY. I've been looking for a video like this for months.
Just got my stamp in the mail and bought a arbor press today, WOW was that not the best thing I had ever done! Fantastic video Ian! Thanks for saving me a boat load of time!
hi Marty. which arbor press did you buy and where do you get the custom stamp. I'm new to this
+Angela njendu I bought the arbor press at Harbor Freight tools for about 40 bucks and had the stamp made by www.etsy.com/shop/Highdesertcncdesigns John is great to work with over there
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You sir Rock! I am a beginner and am making my son a journal and of course I bought a beautiful piece of leather already dyed! I now am able to personalize it! Yea me! Thanks again from Nevada!
Ian, I just ordered some stamps from Le Provo and got a better deal from him shipped to the states than I could get from companies in the USA. Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll tell him you sent me his way, maybe he'll give you a deal on your next order. Keep up the great videos. Cheers!
Thank you for the HD , its perfect , thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you for explaining the heat core temperature and the technique. Very helpful.
Ian, Thanks for sharing this information, I will pass this video to my students and viewers.
Arthur
Thank you so much for these incredibly useful videos. They are just brilliant in every way.
Thank you! I never would have thought of using my heat gun. When I learned leather bookbinding, we used the sizzle test--lick you finger and touch and the die should just hiss a bit. We just went down and up with the press, too, no more than a second.
Huh that turns out really nice! I've never heard of this method. Gonna have to give it a try. Thanks Ian.
Absolutely Prime video as always... no idea how you get this mass of videos out... got to my 20th video on my channel and want to raise my standard... but its hard and you always have such great angles and info! great!
Very helpful. Thanks for making and posting the video!
We own a custom boot shop and use brands exclusively. I really prefer the 3D look of this now. It's beautiful.
Excellent work Ian. Loving all your vids. I've been working on a piece and the color dye I'm trying to achieve is similar to the one in the thumbnail of this video. (Dark Red). I've tried a lot of the dyes but when I get home they dont seem the same. Last one i tried was Feibings Pro Oil Mahoganny. Would you mind sharing what color die it was?
Nice video. I need to do this on a couple of custom jobs and have found it very useful. Have you thought about applying a cross shape on the top of your stamp and carrying the lines down the sides to help with alignment? Never worry about using a heat gun on this type of alloy (Magnesium and Aluminium) as it won't get to a critical temperature. Flames and kilns are more of a problem.
an fyi for you... I have never heard of solid magnesium exploding! it is very dangerous in the powdered/shaved state. it was used many many years ago as flash powder in photographs. I owned a company that made magnesium plates. we subjected the plates to very high temps (300ºf)when mounting the dies and also when vulcanizing rubber plates.
great video on the stamping process... came out very clean
for those of you wanting to get dies like this, search photoengravers or magnesium die makers. copper may also be available in some areas. ask for deep etching with straight shoulders (some may charge extra) for the cleanest dies. there will always be a slope to the edges and very fine detail may be very shallow and not stamp at all.
Ian.Thanks for your great vids.I'm just thinking about having a go at leatherwork and your way of explaning things thoroughly really makes it easier to understand.By the way, what part of Yorkshire are you from.I'm in Leeds.
Coffee on screen "Sizzling Cow's Asses" You funny man! I subbed
Does this work on leather that isn't veg tanned? Cause I have lots of leather that is been tanned, black or dark brown and the usual stamping method won't touch em, thx for a reply.
You can also use an electric flat griddle to heat up your Kydex and it's not expensive. You can buy one from around $20 to $50 American. Not sure what they cost in the UK but shouldn't be much more. Just lay the Kydex on the griddle and let it heat up until it's flexible. You can also order presses from knife making suppliers where you can mold the Kydex around knives, etc.
If I didn't want to spend money on a purpose made stamp, would a one-off soapstone stamp that I make myself work with this method? Being such a soft material it wouldn't last long with any pressure but it holds heat extremely well. Great videos by the way!
Thank you for information, so the temp on non metric scale is about 149-150 deg Fahrenheit.
this is awesome! quick question- has anybody tried a candle or hair dryer instead of a heat gun? and any thoughts about a .5 ton arbor press versus a 1 ton?
Thanks for the great info
Hi Ian any tips on applying a hot/warm stamp on something which will have a slight curve on it? I apply my stamp after cutting, case it, apply stamp, dye then make a razor cover. My logo stretches out a little, deforming. Would I be best to complete razor cover, stretch/ bend then apply my logo? Failing that I think I will have to simplify my makers mark into a horizontal one instead of round type Lessening the risk of distorting my logo. Thanks
When you are wet stamping, don't you have to worry about the impression...shallowing out, or lessening as it dries? Is that a problem that needs to be addressed with the hot stamping? I'm thinking about giving leather works a try and you're videos have been incredibly helpful and encouraging to anyone interested in getting started. Thanks for the vids.
Is there a way to do the opposite of this technique? Found an awesome leather jacket a couple days ago but it's got some fairly shallow yet large Jim Beam branding on the back that I want removed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Great job Ian. I'm using a stamp cut from silver and it works well with a heat gun and arbor too. I wondered if you had tried hot foil with this method?
I have yes, it didn't work too well! I think for hot foil a proper foiling machine would be more appropriate.
Thanks for the video. Very useful :)
Hello what type of leather do I need for heat brand iron. I purchase some soft leather from eBay. When I applied the heat iron the leather shrank so the mark came out smaller
Hi Ian, great tips .. where can I get a stamp made? I am in Australia
Would this method work on Chrome Tanned leather or only vegetable tanned?
does it works on finished sheep leather finished purse/bag/wallet
where do you get your stamps made in the UK. Great videos
good I 'm from panama , I'm learning to do leather work through your channel and so do my own business , those stamps I do not get here but I would like to know what material is or if you can use rubber stamps or other material. thanks greetings and congratulations on your channel.
Look for "custom leather stamp" on ebay, you get them from Hong Kong & China for little money.
On a slightly different subject Ian, why do you have the logo/Makers Mark encased?
Hello. I want to give a clear brown color to the knife sheath. What material should I use?
Just curious if you could use gold foil with this method of heating the stamps?
Hi does this technique only work on leather or would it also work for plastic or wood ? I am considering trying this on shoes
how do you get a stamp with a picture and words on it for imprinting on leather?
Is it possible to get the same result by wetting the leather and cold pressing? Prior to staining/ treating?
It probably wouldn’t be as defined as a hot stamp.
Great video! Can one use the same technique with normal premade stamps (such as craftool for example)? I'd like to try this with letter stamps. Thanks.
+Stephanie Wilson you can yes :)
Did you stamp on the reverse of the leather? i am in South Africa, can i get a stamp made by a 3d engraver in brass?
Look for "custom leather stamp" on ebay, you get them from Hong Kong & China for little money.
Can I press the stam with clicer hand press
Why is that wooden part on your stam did you glue it?
Thanks for this video! Did you need to alter the arbor press at all? I was looking at a branding iron, but am thinking this may be more cost effective.
mine is modified but for other uses, if you just wanted to stamp with it you wouldn't need to do anything (the ram would be a solid bar)
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. It is branding if you want to put you logo on something haha :) great video
awesome thanks mate.
Ian
How do you have that Magnesium stamp adhered to that wood block? I have a stamp that I want to try this with, but it's just a Magnesium stamp NO handle or wooden block. I tried it awhile back, but it gets too hot to hold with my fingers and if I play around with the stamp it's very hard to position it accurately with pliers under the ram of my arbor press. Thank you.
Stoney
Glue!
Where do you buy the stamp itself
is it possible to stamp without the clamp?
Can you tell me where you got the stamp made?
Thank you for this ! If i don't have the pressure thingy, any other ways to do it ? Like a hammer or something ? ;d
Ok.. But how do you do this without a heat gun or the pressure machine you used?
Hi sorry if this is a silly question…
I have been using this technique also do you think it would work with foil also
I want to try the gold foil look on a project
But don’t want a foil machine just thinking up a way to do it with a heat gun and arbor press if possible.
Have you tried this at all
Also is foil for leather a specific foil or can I just use a generic?
I have tried this yes with poor results, I think for foil stamping you need a more consistent and even heat which the machines provide or you’d need to work out the temperatures and quite carefully heat the stamp
came here to see the difference cheers
is veg tan leather ok to stamp
Where do you buy your leather thats not died or finished from.
can you use a hot plate?
i want to get a custom stamp for leatherworking..(hot stamp) where would you recommend to look for one?
Great video
hi were did you get the stamp? and your press. I am on the uk your accent sounds like your in the Midlands.
it really doesn't :)
quick question (which might be daft but I've never worked with leather before so bear with me) is it possible to do this with really old leather?
I'm doing a photography project and ideally I'd want add some lettering to an old knackered leather briefcase (we're talking at least 40-50 years old I reckon) it's dried and cracked, which is part of what makes it look good, so I don't want to bother if trying to stamp it will just trash the thing.
thanks.
if it's dry and cracked then I don't think it will work well no
+Ian Atkinson that's what I feared. Oh well, thanks for the advice.
your stuff is looking really nice by the way. well done.
+Ian Atkinson just a thought, but I don't suppose that I could rejuvenate it by oiling or soaking the leather in any way could I?
again I'm not super hopeful, but it would be nice if I could.
You can, yes, with Obernaufs.
Mrnjaou I would have presumed that wax just sits atop the leather as a protective layer. are you saying that with enough treatments old leather might become potable enough for stamping?
Ian, what is the knife that is in the thumbnail? Is that a Rockstead?
+Jaden Howe yeah a Rockstead Kou (not mine!)
I was gonna have to call you lucky there because I know how expensive those are. Maybe someday I'll have enough for one.
65c is 149f
could you please tell me how to make the stamp...?thanks
have a look at my videos there's one all about the stamps.
+Ian Atkinson texaslonestarleather@ymail.com
"Sizzle cow's asses" lol
Chrizzly Atoms Lol
lol.... "sizzle cows asses"... is that a technical term?
This method works on wood?
I guess it might if you got it really hot the same as a pyrography iron but that's a much higher temperature as you're actually burning the wood. I don't think it would be easy to do without the proper machine.
Would this work on leather wallets already made from China as well as faux leather?
What happens If you don't use the heat? Will it still work? Thanks
***** why, are you planning on buying some cheap chinese wallets and then putting your own brand on?
+Ian Atkinson hahaha so obvious too!!
unfortunately that's how business works nowadays haha.
Is it possible for me to use hair dryer and hammer instead? Thanks sir.
how did you get your stamp made.. did you make it, or purchase it from a 3rd party that created the mold for you?\
Pwayko Brand there's another video all about the stamps.
+Ian Atkinson Where?
+Ian Atkinson yeap, where?
