GeoWizard: Sees an "M" on a Hill and zooms straight into Missoula, Montana
The other options for a big sports text M like that would be Minnesota, Missouri, and Maine, none of which even slightly resemble the terrain.
Stupid me went to Manitoba, Canada because I thought it looked more northern with the barren hills.
@@ylette Nowhere in Manitoba that looks quite like that, but when I saw a valley with brown barren hills my mind immediately went to Kamloops, BC. Right mountain range, I guess.
@@verdiss7487 big M could be also for Michigan but that also doesnt look like that at all
If you're familiar with the terrain and the fact that many areas in the western U.S. put letters up on the hill like that, it wouldn't be too difficult to guess that.
When people ask what I'd want with me if I was stranded on a desert island I'm gonna say GeoguessrWizard cos it would take him about 3 minutes to find out exactly where we are

A place in Belgium that looks like a dump is obviously Charleroi
As a Belgian I saw those awful buildings and even being from Flanders I immediately thought "yep, that's Charleroi".
True, but you have to admit that it's impressive how much better the same location looks in the more recent streetview: although the disappearance of the industrial activity has left many ugly scars on the city, they still try to make the best of it, which I think is pretty admirable.
I know almost nothing about Charleroi or Belgium in general, but still gave this a thumbs up because I'm always up for some inter-city trash talk in the comments
Even as a Dutch i was like thats clearly Charleroi xD
Is that the place where the steel industry collapsed? I work in a steel monotown myself and we had some sketchy moments in the last year, I'd imagine my hometown of Scunthorpe would look similar to Charleroi if the industry collapsed. Scary.
"Bunbury... We'll start at Brisbane"

29:16 There's 74RU. So if you see cyrillic and RU (or RUS) somewhere you should choose Russia. 74 is a region of Chelyabinsk for your future guesses.
My god, that's the most helpful graffiti I've seen!
Actually, probably something pretty useful for GW to study some, since the numbers are pretty distinct in the regions and lots of people seem to like to put big versions of their license plates on parking spots or truck backs. And the numbers are roughly alphabetical to the region/city name (though in Cyrillic) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Russia#/media/File:Russia_license_plates.png
I hope GeoguessrWizard sees this! That region map is one of the most helpful things I have ever seen for rounds in Russia. Even better than US license plates.
Oh thank you I didn't know that !!!!

it's not an m for montana or for missoula, necessarily, it's an m for the university of montana! dude. sick game. and my home town in there no less. rock on.
for those who dont know, this letter on the hill thing is very common for US high schools so it could help or just confuse depending on the situation. it will usually be the first letter of the town name but not guaranteed.
Dude, same! Missoula represent!
If the "L" hadn't of been obscured by the building it probably would've thrown him a bit.
Wait, there actually people who live in Montana? I thought it was just snow & moose
As soon as I saw the area, I instantly thought Montana and assumed Missoula. Once he panned over to the M, I knew it for sure. I've never been, but it's somewhat of a UA-camr haven and I've seen quiet a number of "Hike to the M" vlogs
I saw Salvador the first time you zoomed in to Brazil and I was screaming at my phone!
its a word not just a place so you cant just assume.

You can learn to read Cyrillic in an hour or so. I did it myself. You don't need to speak Russian but you can then identify and spell places.
Please do that.
@` Half the letters are already the same. you just gotta learn some of the wierd looking ones and whats their counter letter in english. then your good to go
@` It's easy - just learn what phonetic sounds the letters make. I learned the Greek alphabet just through my university physics, math and engineering classes so now I can "read" Greek. Russian is similar enough to Greek to where I can always guess what the words are saying. For an example, in this case I could read that the writing on the building said something like "POLIKLINIKA".
@B. Root thats good to know. didn't knew that
@` You don't learn the entire language in an hour, you just learn the alphabet; around 30 different squiggles, some of which are the same as in the Latin alphabet you already know. You won't actually be able to read (that implies understanding), but you will be able to sound out writing and that usually means that you can look up meanings in Google Translate and figure out place names even without help. This isn't difficult for Cyrillic because it developed from Greek uncial script; Peter the Great also westernized it in the 18th century. Once you know the Russian version, you can quickly learn what differences exist in other languages using a Cyrillic alphabet. Greek is pretty easy too; most of us already know some Greek letters from math.
It is harder for languages that use abugidas (consonant+vowel combination units such as Thai), syllabaries (the consonant+vowel unit cannot be split apart; Japanese has two plus logographs), and inconceivable for those that use logographs (Chinese).
John V. England and Poliklinika is smaller hospital :)
Let me know the story of your game. Was it heartbreaking or emphatic? You know where that like button is too chums x
??
I nailed Missoula and Bunbury, got close on Charleroi (I picked Antwerp) and whiffed on Salvador (I was convinced it was Montevideo) and Chelyabinsk (I thought the sign was in Greek because of the lambda. I'm dumb)
Only my second playalong but i've learned so much from watching you after I search for the location. Great for a break during work.
you should read Randomschiks comment - its close to the top. blew my mind

Weird feeling. When you zoomed in on the M, I immediately knew where you were lol. I’ve been on that bridge many times.
Btw. Spokane is pronounced as “Spo-CAN” not “spo-cane”

I'll give you some Brazil tips:
- There's a public phone down the street that says "Oi" in it. That's a Brazilian company
- Bradesco is a Brazilian bank, they are all over the country.
- License plates have 3 letters and 4 numbers and they are gray (although they've changed recently)
- Citroen, Honda, Fiat, Ford, Chevrolet, Renault, Peugeot are super common here
Well Park, estacione bem, "estacione bem" can be roughly translated to "park nicely" or "well parked", I wouldn't notice this horrible pun if you didn't mention it.
Just look for writing. Portuguese is pretty easy to pick out from Spanish.
@@thegongfarmer7298 But you also need to distinguish it from Portugal
Its fairly easy to tell South America from Europe

Dude please learn the difference between Ukrainian and Russian letters it will help you in those rounds.
If you see this: и, an upside down N it's most likely Russia or Belarus but if you see a normal i or i with two dots mixed with the Cyrillic it's Ukraine.
Bonus info: if you see this letter: ъ in most words its Bulgaria.
Yeah for me as Ukrainian it was painful to watch 😅
Yeah, and please learn the other 5000 languages that exist in the world. Why should he pay special attention to the countries you suggest?
Ugh, so close to a perfect score this time! I got 5000 points in the first four rounds with pretty much the same thinking as the Wizard, of course along with searching the map quite a bit, especially in the first round! I even managed to get Chelyabinsk correct, as I think the name of the city is barely readable in Cyrillic as the last word on the plate on the side of the truck that is parked nearby (at least you can kind of see the initial "Ч..." and the "...инск" ending, that is...) With the vein clinic nowhere to be seen on the map though, I didn't get the exact location... 24971 points it is, then!

In case you were wondering, that ‘M’ on the mountain is an M for the University of Montana. It is very common for colleges in the US to put there school’s logo on a mountain if it is on campus.
Cooper Emmott yeah when I saw when he zoomed in I saw the uni of Montana it on the map so it probably correlated.
As a brazilian I was freaking out with the idea of Salvador being written in his face and he wasn't getting it
10:14 I spotted that accelerated “Down Under” instrumental, well played ;)
I totally knew the last one. You could see a graffiti on the wall of that VEIN CLINIC which has number 74 painted there. 74 is a region code for Chelyabinsk oblast' where I was born and raised. It's rarely used outside Chelyabinsk city though so it was a safe bet to say it was indeed Chelyabinsk :)
Doing these maps in 2021 makes it quite different, since most of the pictures are updated and don't have the same "hints". Still fun though!
So I'm watching but mainly listen to this video and I hear him say what's with the M? I look up and I see my home town so I rewind a little to watch from the beginning and not only is that my home town but that me in the black SUV. The M is for the University of Montana
I know this video is old, but the map is slightly different now. The first one is on the next street over, and in the second one, theres a tree blocking the "bunbury" sign.
Doing these in 2021 while google has updated their streetview pictures isn't the same. Missing clues makes it a lot harder :(

1 - I looked so much for Boulevard Tirou. Charleroi was literally my first thought and the first city i looked at. I even looked at french cities near the border and Luxembourg too. Looked at every major city of Belgium with french named roads. Couldn't find it. Was split up between Charleroi, Mons and Brussels for my final decision, it didn't look as much as a such major city but Brussels had more Boulevards and smaller ones that i could miss so ended up going there. 4825 points.
2 - Found Bunbury literally as i zoomed in for the first time in Australia. Looked for churches in Bunbury but ended up finding it through the Australian Post. 5000 points.
3 - Looking around the south coast of Salvador. Looked better where the direction of the roads correlated. Was looking for Moura (which i thought it was an hotel) and for the bank. Found Tecidos Moura pretty quickly. 5000 points.
4 - No idea whatsoever. Went somewhere in Yukon. 1163 points.
5 - Went for Bulgaria. Completely off xD 593 points
Yeah, those last two rounds were rough. 16581 points
rd. 1: 4560 I guessed Riems, not terrible by my standard.
rd. 2: 5000 i recognized the Holden before i saw the .au very lucky to find the city, easy once found.
rd. 3: 49 I was convinced it was the african part of Spain. not enough to go on at least for me. cant believe you got this.
rd. 4: 2884 I went for Eugene OR, was thinking Bend also. Very Hard. Haunting to watch you start it after working on it for 15 min.
rd. 5: 971 I guessed Crimea because I figured it was southern and not in the eu. fantastic.
first time trying hard at this, pretty fun to play along. got a 13464.
I got overly excited when I got dropped into Missoula. I've been there so many time I recognized it right away.
A lot of towns in the western US have a prominent letter on the mountainside. Often it's the high school name (might be named after the town), or a local college. For example, Gunnison, Colorado has a big "W" which stands for Western Colorado University. Golden has a big "M" for the Colorado School of Mines.
Very entertaining video as always. Nice funny details in editing, top quality commentary, incredible geo knowledge, football references. Favourite UA-camr mate, keep going.
Playing this 3 years later, and half the signs on the Australian one are covered by trees ): Was unable to find it
You can tell the difference between Russian and Ukrainian because Ukrainian uses the letter i, while Russian does not.
4:09 i think you mean "incroyable"
The first round blew my mind, there was only the name of street and some words in French xD It could be everywhere!

everyone is blown away by the "m" but if you've spent a lot of time in the western US you'll know how common it is for letters to be on hillsides like that. I guessed Missoula immediately after seeing it.

In the last round, can one tell me why the ‘L’ is shaped like a Greek lambda? Is that another way to write Л?
Yes, it is very common. The name on the building is Поликлиника (Polyclinic)
Clicked on this video because I saw Missoula on the thumbnail. Gree up my whole childhood underneath that M, (for the University of Montana)
So I had to see the video haha.
It's really unfortunate that three years after this got posted the images/places in the challenge are not 100% the same any more and often vital clues are missing or something written is out of focus. Like the picture taken on another day where the car with the citys name on it is missing (3/5).
A tip to distinguish between Ukrainian and Russian: Ukrainian has the letters i, ї, and є (and I mean in cyrillic - if you see a "vein aesthetic clinic", none of those i's matter at all); Russian has э, ъ, and ы, which looks like two letters but is actually one letter (in the scenario that you'll see Ukrainian writing containing ьї - two separate letters btw - you can tell it apart by the dots). Ukrainian is also far more likely to contain the ' symbol inside a word.
I guess on that last one you were.....

As soon as I saw the derelict buildings I said it was Charleroi -- most depressing place I've ever visited
You said run down and Belgium and I though Charleroi . Sorry about that
This guy just narrowed it down to a single country by recognizing a foreign beer on a blurry sign. He’s the next Sherlock, I’m telling you.
Well played. My score: 20429. The imagery for rounds 1 & 3 has changed, making them more difficult to get.
Can't believe the Missoula one. I never thought I'd see my hometown, let alone be right on my commute. I'm glad you at least got that one.
That first one was insane, that beer is just as popular in France I imagine. I know they have a lot of Belgium beer there
I'm kicking myself for giving up on round 1 early. I vaguely remembered Duvel as a Belgian brand and was actually considering Charleroi, but didn't search thoroughly enough and eventually went for Liege. Bummer. I did get Salvador, though, which makes up for most of the disappointment.
For me, the standout guess of this round is the one in Missoula. I never would've found that. Absolutely insane.
i'll come back when i get more pixels :D 360p club? :D
It took you too long to get salvador on the truck. I saw it in just under 30 seconds, sadly I went for El salvador as a state not a city... :/ 🙁. Anyways great job 👍
Salvador is the 4th largest city in Brazil. Seeing the word Salvador along with Portuguese text, the connection should be as immediate as seeing "Manchester" when you're in the UK. I'm glad you finally got it, but if that round were timed you would've been smoked there...
BUT THAT MONTANA ROUND!!!! I seriously call hijinks...
...You should do a Brazil perfect score as punishment. :P
Well, as a fan of automotive things, the mark 1 vw van looked new because it was produced in Brazil, theyve preduced those until 2010.
I got 2 of 5 perfect, mixed up the bridge in Missoula. Had no good guess for the Belgian one, and honestly, what the hell were the English words Vein Aesthetic Clinic doing on the side of a building near Kazakhstan?!? 19840 total.
Just googled the "Vein aesthetic clinic" and the Chelyabinsk branch comes up first. Bizarre.
24240 - Kinda wish I'd tried harder on the first round now.
1) I just went for northern France, didn't have a clue. - 4277
2) Easy one. - 5000
3) Searched for agggges. Convinced myself it was central/south America, but Spanish-speaking. Searched the south-east coast of a lot of places. Then remembered there's an area/city called Salvador in Brazil. Took some searching. - 5000
4) Dropped in, thought 'Ooh that looks like Montana'. Span around 'Hey there's that giant M in Missoula' Thanks to a Hank Green video many years ago. - 5000
5) Searched around for a LOT for cities in/around Russia that had trams. Settled on Chelyabinsk because it had the best fit, and loaads of tramways. Then got frustrated and picked somewhere in the north of the city. (Looking at the map afterwards, it's pretty much impossible. The roads are different, and that clinic I kept searching for wasn't there) - 4963
Cars are a great identifier. Pickups etc, America Canada. New European cars, Northern Europe, older Skodas etc Eastern Europe. Holden etc Australia/NZ.

In the Oz round when he sped up the search was the banjo music "Down Under" by Men at Work?
14946 - Did quite poorly on the Russian one, but really screwed the pooch on Salvador - Assumed it was El Salvador / San Salvador. Other than that, pretty happy.
1- Saw the french writing, didn't know about the beer however I did get Belgian vibes, however i still went France, lol. Went to Lille, so was only 63 miles away, ( how did you find this, so dumb) 4652 points
2- Knew we were in Aussie bc of the website, and driving on the left, but couldn't find 'Bunbury' anywhere. Obvs didn't look hard enough smh. Went in Sydney because of that cool building lol, got 486 points, 50/50 chance of the coasts really!
3- Saw the Spanish/Portuguese writing, and the coast, but nothing else but the 'Salvador' on the van. Might as well go for El Salvador even though I didn't think we were there, what else is there to go by lol. Might as well risk it even though i HIGHLY doubt the google van can even goes there hahaha. Went south of the capital and yeahhhh was 4000 miles off. Did NOT know Salvador was a place in Brazil, 🤷♂️ 55 Points!
4- Literally, NO idea here. I'm not good at this, could be america, spain, scandinavia in my head, literally anywhere tbh, had USA vibes so should have with my instinct, just because of the Baseball stadium. Went Spain and got 0 points surprisingly
5- Saw cyrillic writing or whatever its called and didnt want to go Russia, might as well risk it and go somewhere else. No clues as to what city so went near Kiev and got 1.3k points
fair to say you beat me tom, you're just fucking dumb good at this, FROM AN 'M'?????????? fuck this game lool
The cool building is Bunbury Tower; locally known as 'the milk carton' or 'the shark'. I prefer the former but you hear both.
I've been to Missoula, as soon as you dropped there I was like LOOK FOR THE M!!!! and you've gone and done it. Well done mate.
21721 pts. I was quite proud of my rouund and in fact we had similar ones :)
1. 5000. Saw the french writing, the Duvel sign, the run-down buildings, I immediately thought Charleroi or Namur (I am French), found Boulevard Tirou easily from there.
2. 5000. Looked for Bunbury all around the coast... thought just like you at first that it was in Queenland or on the sunshine coast. Took quite some time but easy enough.
3. 5000. Saw "estacione bem" which is portuguese, and Salvador, went for Salvador de bahia and looked for the something-Moura hotel on the south-east coast.
4. 5000. Instantly had that Spokane vibe, but it looked like a smaller town. That with the 'M' that looked like a university logo, I went upstream from Spokane into Montana, stopped at Missoula because it may have been what the M was for and it had mountains all around, and found that perfectly fitting bridge :)
5. 1721. Gutted when there were no real clues to go by... clicked somewhere in the suburbs of Moscow because the tag with "RU" suggested russia at least.
Real interesting round altogether !
