I soo agree!! Definitely a lost art!! We live in such a “fast fashion” world. I’ve noticed that as I age, I shop much less than I use to, and when do spend on shoes or clothes, I try to make sure I buy quality over quantity.
The majority can't afford stuff nice enough to bother repairing when new ones are basically the same price. $300 boots can be nice when you have them but when all you can afford is $30 boots it's a whole different thing

Totally worth it. Had a pair of my $210- RED WING boots re-soled and got 2 more years out of them. Typically a new pair lasts me 5+ years. I am about to break in my new RED WING boots. You have an important job. You do wonderful work. Keep on keeping on!!!! ❤😊

When I was young, there were shoe repair stores in little shops on Western Av, Blue Island, IL. south of Chicago, The craft of making and repairing shoes in our throwaway world is being lost. Worth every penny.
My father worked heavy construction. He was a journeyman union carpenter. In 1971, he paid over $300 for a pair of custom made work boots. That’d be what? A thousand today? When I asked him why he paid that much for work boots, he explained how important comfort and safety were on a job site. Anyone who’d wear a pair of boots like that, who would take the time to repair them rather than replace, is VERY serious about those particular boots. $95 is a bargain. And I take from the care you put into repairing them, you understand what those boots mean to the client, and you take those boots as seriously as your client does. Plus, you did it at a damned reasonable price. Kudos. You know how to serve hard working people.

It needs you to buy new stuff to finance the extraction of none sustanable ressources and the slave labour that goes with it, so it drives the prices of repair up and the cost of new things down. I agree with you there, little by little I’m transitioning to quality. My tools are my great grandfathers; my car has 290k miles and is healthy, and I’ve got a hell of a lot of experience keeping everything maintained. Old tools are hard to beat, I’ve got a half inch craftsman ratchet that is for all intents and purposes a functional dinosaur. But she’s fully serviceable via two security bolts or something
For boots; once you’ve got the pair you love; it’s hard to part with em, it just make sense to go with a quality repair. It’s not about the feeling of “ooh” when you buy something new; it’s about the “awe” when you put your old reliables on
More than fair, I paid $289 for my redwing steel toe and shank boots way back in the 80’s. The cable company I was climbing poles for bought me a second pair which I still also have today! When they’re broken in there is no replacing them to start over. How comfy do you think both pairs of my redwings feel today being older than most of the kids working in the industry today at 38 years old?! Like slippers lol! Just saddle soap’em down and a good hand polish and brushing is all they ever need. So basic maintenance, and some new laces is ALL they’ll EVER need! A Benjamin would be well worth keeping these puppies safe and sound and looking great! Nice repair job👍🏼👍🏼😉
He made them look shit colored in the end. They look like a fancy turd. Idk why he didn't just clean and recondition/oil, dude basically painted them with the labels/tags and everything. I'd be pissed if these were my boots and he charged me half the price of new ones.
$95 is a steal for that kind of custom work! I'd pay it in a heartbeat when these new are $300 and up and you don't have to go through breaking in and blisters!
These shits ain't 300 bucks. An actual pair of Red Wing 877 or 875 aren't even 300 bucks. At least thy weren't. Idk if they are now I had a pair of 877's that I beat the breaks off of about 7 years ago and they were 250 or 275. I had a pair of iron rangers, I think they were 300 bucks. Got a pair of Viborg boondocks now and a pair of horsehide whites. The vibergs were a lot but the whites were a little under 500 and will last forever. Plus the horse hide isn't as hard to break in.
I use to have an elderly Italian gentleman who had a shoe repair shop. He's up in heaven now...there wasn't anything he couldn't fix and make new looking again. God bless you Gino❤! Shoe repair is an artistic skill!!!

I used to wear those same boots, It's only $175-$200 (depending on retailer, sales ect) pair of boots. Is the price fair idk but on that pair of boots is it worth it at $95 maybe at $150 no way

I’ve never paid more than $120 for boots though and those were for fishing on the ocean. But I’d definitely pay a third of the price they’re worth brand new to fix the damage they have. Your craft is a lost art. We need more people like you in the world. Keep up the great work.
Definitely not worth 300 imo they’re mass produced garbage. Redwing and Irish setter have gone downhill for the price at least. Why not just pay another $200 and get some good quality boots like Nicks handmade boots.
Totally worth it. Good leather boots can last a lifetime if taken care of and had new soles every once in awhile. I love how you actually try to fix something instead of throwing things away and buying new. There's too much of a throwaway society with products nowadays.
On top of that, the leather in boots like these is already broken in and formed to ~your~ foot, so getting them repaired saves you the PITA of breaking in new boots. Same with Birkenstock sandals. I was incredulous when my buddy told me he sent his Birks in for new soles. I was like "don't you mean uppers? Seems like that would be the part that wears out first..." nope, the leather gets broken in and nice and soft, and the soles wear out. So you send them in and they put new soles on your nice, soft uppers.
I have 15 year old combat boots.. I use them when i go fishing, metal detecting, work outside or just need to walk long distances in nature. Ive kept them like a baby and good maintanance montly
Lots of things have always been thrown away. Really depends on the cost of repair verses replacement. Lots of things are repairable. And example would be chainsaws. They still make great saws and even used to make cheap saws as well. But if you spend a few hundred dollars on a saw. And shit happens. If you can't fix it yourself, it's probably not repairing as labor rates and parts will easily exceed the replacement cost. I went to school for outdoor power equipment and fix a lot. But turn down tons cause there is no money fixing someone's 100 string trimmer or cheap chainsaw.
I would prefere to change to new boots every 6months. Idealy have 2 pairs and rotate every other day. If you work in construction shoes and their soles wear out faster than you you think in expence of your back and knees etc.
Considering a new pair costs well over that, and your craftsmanship is 10000% better then factory standards.. I’d say it is well worth is brother. Well done.
There isn't a pair of Irish setter boots on their Web site over 300. Most I've seen is about 250 and under. They are nice boots but there are better quality options out there as well if your willing to pay for a premium quality boot work rebuilding.

Nothing is better than old worn in leather, but boots especially. The leather has moulded itself to wearer’s feet, it is soft, flexible, and comfortable. Putting on a pair of worn in leather boots, is like putting on a pair of old friends.

Then confiscated them and issued an another new pair the next day. By the end of the week the soldiers would have no skin left on their feet.
Definitely worth it, once spent $90 on a resole, the cost over a new pair when considering breaking in is a fair trade. Plus you repaired and refinished these boots and very well might I add. Great work!

My only issue is the look they have gone from work boots to fashion boot look if he had kept them looking like work boots even with the restoration I’d probably have paid more I’m also not sure about the sole he re soled with looks very flat potentially not the best for work and it definitely doesn’t have a sole plate
Wow! My grandfather and his friends working in the railroad yards used to have their shoes repaired like this in the 1960s! It’s so great to see there are still great craftsmanship repairing and keeping boots in service like this! In our “disposable” society people have lost a sense of value for many things. You just brought me flashbacks from 31 years ago ice-skating. The blisters and raw skin after Wednesday afternoon. Our school let us choose something to do on a Wednesday afternoon instead of learning. I ended up not going and getting stoned for the first time. Went back in 1996 to sit in the seating area and have fun with a gal I found on Hot Gossip phone chat line. I reached out to her online last year but nah. She looks entirely grown up now.
I'm thinking you need to charge more! One of my drill sergeants in basic said it best "About the time your boots are comfortable, it'll be time to throw them away and get a new pair." Throughout my military service and work in a diesel shop, no truer words have ever been spoken. Once I can walk and lift all-day comfortably in steel toe, they're starting to fall apart.
It is a pity there are no more like you. I can not wear the new safety boots, and only the older plainer ones are good for my feet. Your restoration is great and well worth the price.

For steel cap boots, 100% worth it! When you're used to wearing the same boots all the time and you're doing a job where you're standing up a lot, getting new boots can mean getting hurt for the first couple of day until they are broken in. Also, from experience, shops with steel cap boots never carry the same boots in shop for long so, by the time you need to replace your boots, you either ask the shop to order you the same ones you have if you can remember their make and model or, what happens to me every time, you have to change the boots and go for different ones with a different feel. I hate changing my boots because of this
Not a craftsman but my experience with snowboardboots is that insoles can be a gamechanger. As an instructor you have to get new boots every few seasons and have different boots for free and work time. Having insoles you can take out and put into new or different shoes makes them feel quite similar imho.
This is why my last pair. After I wore them for a month and figured they broke in right and were a great fit snd boot....I went and bought another pair lol. To bad they have been sitting in the closet for over 5 years. I've gotten the original pair repaired 2 times. I guess I'll give the others a shot once I walk slap out of the OGs....I did have the soul replaced with the same ones I had put in the OGA already. Like walking on a cloud without the squish of one to soft.
That’s a very fair price. Definitely worth $95 to have basically new custom boots. A little less than 1/3 the price of new ones. Our local cobbler closed a couple of years ago. I wish they were still open. I used them quite often.
Hi, Thanks for the video. To answer your question, it is a calculation on the purchasing price versus de repair. I suppose that the person buying them for over 300 $. Financially it is just a straight calculation. Often going cheap ends up in a more costly solution in the long run. If I am wearing those boots every day at work, It is a well spent money as the comfort and safety will be restored. I love watching your work. Take care.
My dad had the same pair. He was a hard working man and Marine, he taught me to “take care of your leather and your leather will take care of you!” As a teen I polished his boots one day. He said “no one’s ever polished my boots for me” I smiled real big on the inside. God is amazing!
Your price is certainly fair for the work you did here, no doubt. Outstanding job. I would 100% do this. Particularly because as you stated once boots are broken and you don't want to have to break in a new pair of boots again. However I would need the insole and interior lining replaced on mine. It's both a sensory and hygiene thing. But as far as this repair goes, Outstanding and at a fair AND reasonable price!
When I started working excavation a old guy noticed that I was struggling with my boots. After work he came up to me (which had me scared because he was the guy everyone feared) And told me to go to the boot shop down the road and buy a pair of H&H Browns. He said buy them this Friday and put them in the sink and fill them with water overnight. That Friday I brought what I thought was the best fitting boot and did ad he said. He said to drain the water out and wear them all day over the weekend. OMG I miss those boots!! I had them resoled twice and the 3rd time the cobler said that I needed to let them go. I've never had another boot that fed my soul like that pair. It's time to try with another something but I haven't been able to pick a brand worthy of me putting my feet in and wearing all day to get them to form to my feet.

Absolutely. Repair. I have two pair of military surplus boots. One I've had for about 6 years, another for 4-5. True age unknown since I bought them surplus. Around $100 a pair when I bought them. Both have Vibram soles. I'm a carpenter, so they get moderate use. Had them reconditioned recently. Some popped stitching. Some sole separation. One boot had a small hole in the Achilles tendon area. A patch on the hole, resewn stitching, soles reattached where they were coming off. $25 a pair. Now I have two good pair again for $50. Cobbler said he thought it would be $250 a pair to replace them with something of equivalent quality. He might not know about military surplus boots. I believe I could replace them with the exact same boots for around $130 a pair, I think they're still available and they've gone up a little. So, $260-500 to replace, 50 to repair. It's a no brainer. Some of my coworkers spend $200 a year on boots. Even if I have to bring them to the cobbler once a year and spend $50 on them, I'm still getting ahead. Repair is the way to go. It's like having lawnmower blades and saw blades sharpened. Definitely worth it. Things are expensive today. Buy two of things so one can be reconditioned while you use the other. I alternate my boots so one pair doesn't get worn into the ground and so I have a back up pair in case one needs to go into the cobbler's shop.
As a german orthopaedic cobbler i have to say that you are absolutely crazy. If we would do something like this and the client would be injured on the job we would never be able to work in the field ever again and suited to pieces.

Also you cant just glue on a completly different sole, if he steps on a nail or something, gues what happens. Sued to oblivien. Don't own a nice pair of work boots,I use Puma work boots because they're light. But have my RM Williams which have been re soled 3 times now. They were $700 AUD and they look brand new.@@smclynden

Yes, good price, quality work for a reasonable price. Quality is so much better, I hope to see more people appreciate quality. Anyone that has a good fitting boot that's broke-in, especially if like this boot owner and their foot health and safety depend on a quality boot. It is definitely worth the price.
I’m a retired military veteran and I always had new soles put on and leather work done when need, i even got my ex to get her expensive girly boots repaired from 2-3 winters because they were expensive boots. She’s still wearing them now and they are 14 years old now and been resoled 2-3 times she loves them. So i think your profession is a great one, to bad people buy throw away shoes non stop so cobblers are virtually gone in most cities and towns. I think the military presence here keeps these guys busy

100% worth it having some already broken in boots that are comfy to work in is amazing. Having a pair refurbished but still be broken in is even better.
No, it's worth it. I've had a pair or Redwings over 10 years and had rebuild over 3 times, each times feels better with new souls feels more of a custom boot! Love that tough toe ooze!
My work boots cost 250, I make enough to buy a new pair every 6-7 months. Feet are the number 1 priority so I like to keep them happy, you did do an amazing job tho
The uppers on those boots you throw away are likely fine, with the benefit those shoes are already broken in. There's no decrease in comfort, or safety, with resoling, and in fact it's what we've done since we've worn shoes. You do you, but next time you might want to try going to the cobbler instead of the dump and the shoe shop.
Might as well upgrade to White's, Frank's, Nick's, or JKs, get the benefit of a better boot with every step while they outlast the other options and actually save you money...

This is not a piece of clothing to the owner, these boots are tools, and just like any tools you are comfortable with and trust them to do what they are supposed to, having them serviced instead of buying new ones due to normal wear and tear is the RULE! Totally worth the repair!

It needs you to buy new stuff to finance the extraction of none sustanable ressources and the slave labour that goes with it, so it drives the prices of repair up and the cost of new things down. My tools are my great grandfathers; my car has 290k miles and is healthy, and I’ve got a hell of a lot of experience keeping everything maintained.
Old tools are hard to beat, I’ve got a half inch craftsman ratchet that is for all intents and purposes a functional dinosaur.
But she’s fully serviceable via two security bolts or something
For boots; once you’ve got the pair you love; it’s hard to part with em, it just make sense to go with a quality repair.
It’s not about the feeling of “ooh” when you buy something new; it’s about the “awe” when you put your old reliables on

More than fair, I paid $289 for my redwing steel toe and shank boots way back in the 80’s. The cable company I was climbing poles for bought me a second pair which I still also have today! When they’re broken in there is no replacing them to start over. How comfy do you think both pairs of my redwings feel today being older than most of the kids working in the industry today at 38 years old?! Like slippers lol! Just saddle soap’em down and a good hand polish and brushing is all they ever need. So basic maintenance, and some new laces is ALL they’ll EVER need! A Benjamin would be well worth keeping these puppies safe and sound and looking great! Nice repair job👍🏼👍🏼😉

These shits ain't 300 bucks. An actual pair of Red Wing 877 or 875 aren't even 300 bucks. At least thy weren't. Idk if they are now I had a pair of 877's that I beat the breaks off of about 7 years ago and they were 250 or 275. I had a pair of iron rangers, I think they were 300 bucks. Got a pair of Viborg boondocks now and a pair of horsehide whites. The vibergs were a lot but the whites were a little under 500 and will last forever. Plus the horse hide isn't as hard to break in.

I used to wear those same boots, It's only $175-$200 (depending on retailer, sales ect) pair of boots. Is the price fair idk but on that pair of boots is it worth it at $95 maybe at $150 no way

$95 to repair and clean up a pair of boots that costs $300 brand new is a pretty good deal if they’re the kind of boots that are worth $300. I’ve never paid more than $120 for boots though and those were for fishing on the ocean. But I’d definitely pay a third of the price they’re worth brand new to fix the damage they have.

Totally worth it. Good leather boots can last a lifetime if taken care of and had new soles every once in awhile. I love how you actually try to fix something instead of throwing things away and buying new. There's too much of a throwaway society with products nowadays.
On top of that, the leather in boots like these is already broken in and formed to ~your~ foot, so getting them repaired saves you the PITA of breaking in new boots. Same with Birkenstock sandals. I was incredulous when my buddy told me he sent his Birks in for new soles. I was like "don't you mean uppers? Seems like that would be the part that wears out first..." nope, the leather gets broken in and nice and soft, and the soles wear out. So you send them in and they put new soles on your nice, soft uppers.

I have 15 year old combat boots.. I use them when i go fishing, metal detecting, work outside or just need to walk long distances in nature. Ive kept them like a baby and good maintanance montly
Lots of things have always been thrown away. Really depends on the cost of repair verses replacement. Lots of things are repairable.
And example would be chainsaws. They still make great saws and even used to make cheap saws as well. But if you spend a few hundred dollars on a saw. And shit happens. If you can't fix it yourself, it's probably not repairing as labor rates and parts will easily exceed the replacement cost.
I went to school for outdoor power equipment and fix a lot. But turn down tons cause there is no money fixing someone's 100 string trimmer or cheap chainsaw.
I would prefere to change to new boots every 6months. Idealy have 2 pairs and rotate every other day. If you work in construction shoes and their soles wear out faster than you you think in expence of your back and knees etc.

There isn't a pair of Irish setter boots on their Web site over 300. Most I've seen is about 250 and under. They are nice boots but there are better quality options out there as well if your willing to pay for a premium quality boot work rebuilding.

Nothing is better than old worn in leather, but boots especially. The leather has moulded itself to wearer’s feet, it is soft, flexible, and comfortable. Putting on a pair of worn in leather boots, is like putting on a pair of old friends.

Leather stretches, so it's important to buy boots that fit correctly. Otherwise when they get worn-in, they will be too loose.

Then confiscated them and issued an another new pair the next day. By the end of the week the soldiers would have no skin left on their feet.

Wow! My grandfather and his friends working in the railroad yards used to have their shoes repaired like this in the 1960s! It’s so great to see there are still great craftsmanship repairing and keeping boots in service like this! In our “disposable” society people have lost a sense of value for many things. You just brought me flashbacks from 31 years ago ice-skating. The blisters and raw skin after Wednesday afternoon. Our school let us choose something to do on a Wednesday afternoon instead of learning. I ended up not going and getting stoned for the first time. Went back in 1996 to sit in the seating area and have fun with a gal I found on Hot Gossip phone chat line. I reached out to her online last year but nah. She looks entirely grown up now.

I'm thinking you need to charge more! One of my drill sergeants in basic said it best "About the time your boots are comfortable, it'll be time to throw them away and get a new pair." Throughout my military service and work in a diesel shop, no truer words have ever been spoken. Once I can walk and lift all-day comfortably in steel toe, they're starting to fall apart.
As an aircraft mechanic what you did for that guy is amazing. My boots cost anywhere from 160 to 300. So yes 95 was well worth it.
Just speed tape and loctite your way to the shoes and it’s good up to 1000 flc with rep insp every 30 calendar days.
It is a pity there are no more like you. I can not wear the new safety boots, and only the older plainer ones are good for my feet.

For steel cap boots, 100% worth it! When you're used to wearing the same boots all the time and you're doing a job where you're standing up a lot, getting new boots can mean getting hurt for the first couple of day until they are broken in. Also, from experience, shops with steel cap boots never carry the same boots in shop for long so, by the time you need to replace your boots, you either ask the shop to order you the same ones you have if you can remember their make and model or, what happens to me every time, you have to change the boots and go for different ones with a different feel. I hate changing my boots because of this
Not a craftsman but my experience with snowboardboots is that insoles can be a gamechanger. As an instructor you have to get new boots every few seasons and have different boots for free and work time. Having insoles you can take out and put into new or different shoes makes them feel quite similar imho.
This is why my last pair. After I wore them for a month and figured they broke in right and were a great fit snd boot....I went and bought another pair lol. To bad they have been sitting in the closet for over 5 years. I've gotten the original pair repaired 2 times. I guess I'll give the others a shot once I walk slap out of the OGs....I did have the soul replaced with the same ones I had put in the OGA already. Like walking on a cloud without the squish of one to soft.
That’s a very fair price. Definitely worth $95 to have basically new custom boots. A little less than 1/3 the price of new ones. Our local cobbler closed a couple of years ago. I wish they were still open. I used them quite often.
Might be worth tracking them down and seeing if they can do it still. I know a carpenter who retired but still does odd jobs

Hi, Thanks for the video. To answer your question, it is a calculation on the purchasing price versus de repair. I suppose that the person buying them for over 300 $. Financially it is just a straight calculation. Often going cheap ends up in a more costly solution in the long run. If I am wearing those boots every day at work, It is a well spent money as the comfort and safety will be restored. I love watching your work. Take care.

My dad had the same pair. He was a hard working man and Marine, he taught me to “take care of your leather and your leather will take care of you!” As a teen I polished his boots one day. He said “no one’s ever polished my boots for me” I smiled real big on the inside. God is amazing!

Your price is certainly fair for the work you did here, no doubt. Outstanding job. I would 100% do this. Particularly because as you stated once boots are broken and you don't want to have to break in a new pair of boots again. However I would need the insole and interior lining replaced on mine. It's both a sensory and hygiene thing.

When I started working excavation a old guy noticed that I was struggling with my boots. After work he came up to me (which had me scared because he was the guy everyone feared)
And told me to go to the boot shop down the road and buy a pair of H&H Browns. He said buy them this Friday and put them in the sink and fill them with water overnight.
That Friday I brought what I thought was the best fitting boot and did ad he said.
He said to drain the water out and wear them all day over the weekend.
OMG I miss those boots!! I had them resoled twice and the 3rd time the cobler said that I needed to let them go. I've never had another boot that fed my soul like that pair. It's time to try with another something but I haven't been able to pick a brand worthy of me putting my feet in and wearing all day to get them to form to my feet.

Absolutely. Repair. I have two pair of military surplus boots. One I've had for about 6 years, another for 4-5. True age unknown since I bought them surplus. Around $100 a pair when I bought them. Both have Vibram soles. I'm a carpenter, so they get moderate use. Had them reconditioned recently. Some popped stitching. Some sole separation. One boot had a small hole in the Achilles tendon area. A patch on the hole, resewn stitching, soles reattached where they were coming off. $25 a pair. Now I have two good pair again for $50. Cobbler said he thought it would be $250 a pair to replace them with something of equivalent quality. He might not know about military surplus boots. I believe I could replace them with the exact same boots for around $130 a pair, I think they're still available and they've gone up a little. So, $260-500 to replace, 50 to repair. It's a no brainer. Some of my coworkers spend $200 a year on boots. Even if I have to bring them to the cobbler once a year and spend $50 on them, I'm still getting ahead. Repair is the way to go. It's like having lawnmower blades and saw blades sharpened. Definitely worth it. Things are expensive today. Buy two of things so one can be reconditioned while you use the other. I alternate my boots so one pair doesn't get worn into the ground and so I have a back up pair in case one needs to go into the cobbler's shop.
As a german orthopaedic cobbler i have to say that you are absolutely crazy. If we would do something like this and the client would be injured on the job we would never be able to work in the field ever again and suited to pieces.

I work in construction and was throwing 200-300$ dollars into boots every 3-6 months. Tried screwing the soles back together and still didn't work. 95 bucks? Absolutely worth it. Especially cause my diy repairs caused me to fall off a wall and mangle my ankle

Yes, good price, quality work for a reasonable price. Quality is so much better, I hope to see more people appreciate quality. Anyone that has a good fitting boot that's broke-in, especially if like this boot owner and their foot health and safety depend on a quality boot. It is definitely worth the price.

I’m a retired military veteran and I always had new soles put on and leather work done when need, i even got my ex to get her expensive girly boots repaired from 2-3 winters because they were expensive boots. She’s still wearing them now and they are 14 years old now and been resoled 2-3 times she loves them. So i think your profession is a great one, to bad people buy throw away shoes non stop so cobblers are virtually gone in most cities and towns. I think the military presence here keeps these guys busy
I know my union prefers I buy new boots. So I take home my old ones and get them repaired. First pair lasted 10 years before I threw them away.

The uppers on those boots you throw away are likely fine, with the benefit those shoes are already broken in.
There's no decrease in comfort, or safety, with resoling, and in fact it's what we've done since we've worn shoes.
You do you, but next time you might want to try going to the cobbler instead of the dump and the shoe shop.
Might as well upgrade to White's, Frank's, Nick's, or JKs, get the benefit of a better boot with every step while they outlast the other options and actually save you money...

This is not a piece of clothing to the owner, these boots are tools, and just like any tools you are comfortable with and trust them to do what they are supposed to, having them serviced instead of buying new ones due to normal wear and tear is the RULE! Totally worth the repair!
