Synopsis:
Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination - the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. Goosebumps was never super frightening. A little unsettling, but the only thing terrifying about them were the awesome cover illustrations.
Other than that, go reread them. Some of them are just straight up goofy and nonsensical, like "How To Kill A Monster." A furry-green monster with an aligator head. A castle in the middle of a swamp. The kids having gym-sized rooms with a granny that robotically produces a mountain of pancakes. It's completely goofy kid fantasy with a bit of the macabre tossed in. Goosebumps has always been suitable for families.

The books seem really dark and creepy but they've made this into a little kids film

I read the books as a kid. doesn't look like it used to
be honest guys the books aren't scary it was just the cover of the books and some episodes of the tv show
mike nike The books were horrifying. At least in concept. The girl who never realized she died in a fire. The girl who accidently killed her sister in place of a evil doppelganger. The girl who couldn't take off her mask. The boy who saw violent deaths to come when he flashed his camera. The kidnappers that threaten a boy's family when they are after mermaids. The family that moves in a new creepy home only to realize the entire town is actually ghosts. Come on man, be honest. Even if they weren't scary to you they were always dark. This movie effectively takes a crap on all that.

mike nike Not really. He says that they "come to life" meaning they weren't alive before. Of course it is possible, but who cares if the movie is not about any of those individual stories. The story is about monsters getting loose around the city destroying things. That's not scary. They should have picked a story or two and adapted it into the plot of the movie. Or maybe multiple stories like "VHS" does with their movies. Anything is better than goofy jokes and the monsters acting like wild animals out of jumanji. It has all the characters but none of the stories.
It would have been better if they didn't take the comedic route and added a little horror.

Don't read the books. If you do, the movies attempt at comedy over horror is going to ruin everyone.
Without the books there would be no movie adaptations hence my statement. And when one has no expectation of the hollywoodization of the beloved books there can certainly be no disappointment.
