- In a major case of deja vu, the New York Islanders allowed five goals in the final six minutes of the game, blew a 4-1 third period lead and lost 6-4 to the New York Rangers in their second preseason game. We'll discuss why it matters and in what ways it doesn't. The important thing is how do Patrick Roy and the players respond to this?

i dont think its a collapse they pulled varlamov for tikkanen ,to learn more about what they have in him. Its just a preseason game ,if it was a regular season or playoff game they would not have pulled varlamov and would ice the regular season roster not having so many ahl guys in the lineup as they did.

You never want to get in the habit of losing but the lost doesn’t bother me considering the fact you had a Ahl goaltender who looked shaky from the start, but on a positive note ours first line completely dominated the game
its his first NHL camp-kid came from no where last year and did a great job in the AHL.

the scope of your post is -you had an ahl goalie and it would be expected that he was terrible-but the first line looked good. The scope of my comment is it's the goalies first nhl camp-in a way we both kind of said the same thing. relax- its a preseason game. i know the 1st amendment is under assault but ....

After cooling off and watching you Gil I agree that if they learn and take positives away from this loss and if it finally clicks, because it left a bad taste reminding me of last year, then this game was worth it!

Gil I really don't think that this will be an ongoing issue but I will say this they controlled that puck really well when our top guys were out there I was very happy with thier performance
They played very well for 53 minutes and just couldn't finish the job. Obviously, Tikkanen won't be in goal once the games count and half the players out there won't be playing in the NHL either. I just hope psychologically, they're OK and this doesn't get inside their heads. Roy will have to see to that. Thank for the comment, Cory. LGI.
It makes sense if your blind and you can't see who's in net our main did really really well and seeing duclair link up with barzy it's gonna awesome what they can do during the year

That was terrible! Tikkanen shouldn’t see the ice unless it’s the minors. The guys is 6’8” and he played like he was 3’8”. Horrible. PP looked like Lamberts ghosts was in there. I’m just glad it was preseason but that still is very very concerning.
Tikkanen isn't ready for the NHL and he may never be (give him time). There are things that need to be worked on, but the hopefully Roy can address these issues before the games count. Thanks for the comment, Danfromoverthere. LGI.
Seems to me: Cholowski was facing the wrong way on goal # 3 though Tikkanen should have stopped it. Goal #4 there’s no excuse for that one getting past Tikkanen, goal # 5 Tikkanen probably should’ve stopped, there were a lot players in front of him, but he definitely slowed it down so he should have stopped it. He probably doesn’t need to be Varly’s backup but I haven’t seen Kincaid at all & only a little bit of Hogeberg
Tikkanen is not a candidate to be the backup if Sorokin isn't ready to start the season. He will first need to establish himself as a quality AHL goalie. I think Hogberg is most likely to be the initial backup if Sorokin isn't ready with Kinkaid being next most likely. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the comment, Mike. LGI.
Mayfield is problematic he continues to have the most penalties every game! Just like last year! Ridiculous in my opinion

these late collapses is because this team is too soft, they lack toughness.

Sorry that was embarrassing preseason or not it literally felt like the Rangers could have pulled the goalie with 10 min left and still Islanders wouldn't have scored an empty net goal.. It was not being able to gain possession of the puck for even a clear that was unacceptable even for preseason..
The last 6 minutes of the game were dreadful defensively. The Rangers pulled their goalie with 3:15 left and the Isles couldn't get possession or make a save. Roy has to nip this in the bud immediately. Thanks for the comment, e.n.yjay1925. LGI.
This is what happens when you pick a goalie just because he’s huge.

I'm not worried. We had 9 subs on the roster, and the goalie clearly isn't ready for prime time. I saw enough good to be upbeat about the coming season.
1) The top line showed some juice.
2) The PP was moving the puck and creating chances.
3) We showed depth with 3 or4 prospects and signings playing very well.
Nobody noticed Lindgren leaking on to the ice after his fight with Mayfield. He had no facial cuts or nosebleed, and that usually means a broken jaw.
Engvall was his usual Mr. Softie, refusing to use his big body to win puck battles or disrupt the puck carrier.
I didn't even realize Engvall was in the lineup until I saw him behind the net in the 3rd period.
Engvall remains an issue. He has speed and reach, but wouldn't hit to save himself and doesn't produce much offense. The top line looked good and the PP did a lot but didn't finish. Thanks for the comment, Bob. LGI.

My 3 takeaways: 1) Duclair looks more than capable of playing on that 1st line. I was originally thinking he'd be better suited on the 2nd line, but so far so good. 2) Varly looked sharp, Tikkanen did not and probably lost the game for them. 3) Mayfield's hit appeared to be clean, and for the first time in a long time, he was able to take care of business when Lindgren came looking for him.
Duclair looks like a good fit with Bo and Barzy and yes, Varly played well. They'll need him early in the year especially until Sorokin is fully healthy. Mayfield's hit was knee on knee but it wasn't intentional and yes, he handled himself well in the inevitable fight. Thanks for the comment, Another_User_Name_, LGI.
Irony, the isles up by 5 goals in a preseason game with a top nhl goalie in net, fans jumping for joy, isles blow the lead and the fans cry when an ahl goalie is swiss cheese !

Good morning team! Loved the episode, Gil. Hate the Rangers. Well, hate is such a strong word. I know that game wasn't such a big deal. I just enjoy beating the Rangers, when we can. Revenge during the regular season games will be sweet. Our top line was on point, had chemistry, and they were very fun to watch. Let's Go Islanders!!

Rangers won 16 more games than Islanders last season. I was more surprised the first two periods than the last. The Rangers finally played the way they are supposed to in the 3rd. Nice Duclair setup for a goal. Everything will be ok. GO ISLES

While it does feel like de ja vu all over again because of last year, im not gonna get to down on them. And im not gonna get down on the keeper either. All the goals he let in woulda been tough for any goalie. An unfortunate deflection, a one on one break away thats always 50-50, a puck that landed right in front of net for a easy tap in. A perfect placement top corner rope that you just gotta tip ur hat to. And maybe he coulda taken a better angle on that last goal? But still that was a 6 on 5 executed by beautiful puck control and passing. I hope he keeps his head up and is told as much by the coaching staff!
Tikkanen looked good until the final six minutes. I don't think any of them were soft goals, but man, the defense couldn't clear the puck to save themselves and boy, the Rangers were passing the puck at will. Thanks for the comment and LGI.

the biggest psychological hit is how long is Sorokin out and are we going to be on pins on needles all season because varly is not gonna handle full time goaltending at his age ....needs a backup and at most start 70% of games
We are still in the dark about how long Sorokin will be out. He's skating on his own but that's all we know. Varly cannot play more than 50 games and preferably closer to 40 at most. I hope Sorokin is ready sooner rather than later. If he's not ready to start the season, Hogberg is the likely backup. Thanks for the comment, foleydvm. LGI.

Back and then goes in and out or reinjures himself and is in and out all season or he comes back guts it out and has a subpar season. A Vezina bounce back season is not in the cards. Holy fk i know its only pre-season but that looked like a lame-0 type of collapse. The back-up goalie brought in after 40 left tikkanan-5 g on 13 shots. .615 sv. %. brutal. You think louzer is getting a little nervous about back-up goaltending if 30 is out for a long stretch? Foudy another no hands guy-5 sog, 0 g. Useless 18 skated around to a -3. On a bright note 11 duclair 2 assts. playing with 13, 14. The early favourite for winger on that line. 24 continues to regress. ahl players or not this was a common theme last season-too many blow leads, many of the 3-4 goal variety including blown 3-1 gm. 5 lead vs. canes.
The Isles collapse wasn't pretty, that's for sure. Tikkanen isn't ready for the NHL and we'll see if he ever will be. If Sorokin is out, Hogberg is most likely to back up Varly until Sorokin returns. Being the Rangers played almost their regular NHL line up … I blame this on Roy!!!! You see the Rangers Lineup! Packed ! Varly should have played the whole game with that Ranger line up! You don’t put in an inexperienced Goalie in Roy!!!!!!!! If Roy wants a better team and does not want losing in their heads then Coach like you want to win not lose! This loss is all on Roy! Roy only has himself to blame!
Otto, it's a question of priorities. The Rangers played to win the game, the Isles emphasized giving their prospects a look including an inexperienced goalie. They also wanted to see the top line work together. So, yes, Roy made decisions that cost the team the game but that's because winning a preseason game wasn't top priority. Thanks for the comment.
