  • The Cistern Symphony was created in the Dan Harpole Cistern at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington. Stephen Cohen and Rich Hinrichsen of the WALKING WILLOWS made two descents into the Cistern, one in 2010 and one in 2011, while doing Creative Residencies at Centrum, an art organization on the grounds of Fort Worden. They were joined in their descents by several guests musicians, including Bruce Cowan, Todd Johnson, and Selah Martha, as well as photographer Julie Keefe. They could not get Rich's double bass into the small opening that leads into the Cistern, but were able to get Stephen's acoustic guitar, several singers, a toy piano, and Todd Johnson's didgeridoos and trombone into the Cistern, and were also able to make use of some found metal objects in the Cistern, as you will hear in the Cistern Symphony.
What is the Cistern Symphony? Is it a musical album? Is it a music video? Is it a film? Is it a symphony? Is it a work of art?
We like to think it is all these things in one.
